Medium Patzy is a playful young dog and needs a home with another playful dog. Patzy is under-socialized, so her new family must be very patient and help her learn a new home and new people at her own pace. This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.
Welcome Patzy! Patzy came from a commercial breeder almost two months ago now. When she came in to her foster home she was VERY pregnant and VERY scared. She had never been in a home or been socialized with people. She had many of the behaviors we typically see with these dogs. Afraid of humans, new noises like the TV and dishwasher, going in and out of doorways and the car. Going to the vet was very scary. Like nearly all breeder dogs, she was more comfortable with my resident dogs than with me. She soon learned that I would only give her positive attention and pets and lots of love. Within a few days she would come to me if I was sitting down so she could get her share of the loving touches. She follows my dogs everywhere.
One week after coming in, Patzy went into labor. With the help of many RAGOM volunteers and special friends, we had prepared a whelping box and all the supplies we would need to help Momma Patzy care for her newborns. She didn't need much! Patzy took care of the birthing on her own and is such a good momma. She had NINE puppies in about 8 hours!! We fed her vanilla ice cream to keep her energy up and she ate the whole half gallon with gusto.
For the first 3 weeks, Patzy wanted to stay in the whelping box except to do her business outside. She kept her babies clean and nursed around the clock.
Now they are 6+ weeks old and Patzy is spending more time out of the puppy pen than in. The puppies are nearly completely weaned and Momma doesn't have much, if any, milk left. They still like to suckle at times and she still likes to clean up after them.
Patzy turned 2 years old in May and is really just a playful young dog. She needs a home with another playful dog to thrive in. Her new family will need to understand the fears that come with a lack of socialization and be patient as she learns a new home and new people. I have no doubt she will do great and give back the love as she has to me. More about Patzy in the coming days.
