Profile

Abbott – clearly a sterling name for a first-rate dog.  Abbott came to us in Fridley as a stray from a shelter in Western MN. He was well taken care of and consequently is up-to-date on all his shots. He is recovering nicely from his recent neutering, and will be ready to go to a fur-ever family as soon as they discover he’s the dog for them!

Abbott is just getting used to taking walks with us and is getting along pretty well with the Gentle Leader to help guide him. At 67 pounds, Abbott is a very strong and tall boy, so needs a firm hand to keep him close.  He could really benefit from obedience training, but already shows signs of learning some basic commands.

One thing we’ve noticed about Abbott, is that he loves to play hard. He’s a one year-old pup - ready for anything. He and our 3 year-old resident dog have had several wild and crazy, play times in our fenced-in yard. Some one always backs down, so everyone has a great time, no one is hurt and each of them is ready to meet the challenge next time they go out.

When Abbott was found, he had a visible bump on the back of his front right elbow. It was checked out by our vet and she reported that he has a hygroma – a non painful, fluid-filled swelling on the elbow which will eventually go away by itself. A hygroma can occur as a result of lying on hard surfaces, such as cement or hardwood floors. It is more common in larger breed dogs in which more weight is placed on the bony area having contact with the hard surface. Surgery was not recommended as the complications would be worse than waiting for the hygroma to dissipate on its own. He is not bothered by it, but a soft doggy bed is a real comfort to him. He sleeps on that at night in our bedroom.

We will be bringing Abbott to our Ragom pet event at Chuck & Don’s in Roseville on Saturday, Oct. 30.  Come and meet this beautiful boy!  He’s sure to win a spot in your heart and your home.
