This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog. |
Bear came back to RAGOM on May 31 because he had a confrontation with a neighborhood pug puppy, which resulted in critical injuries to the puppy. Bear has a high prey drive, but we have seen no aggression in the 3 weeks Bear has been in our home. The previous foster noted Bear as cat friendly; we have not tested him. Bear is a loving, lovable, and lively 3 year old. He is also very, very handsome. Here are some of Bear’s characteristics:
Manners : Bear has very nice manners in the house. Bear is good with adult company, he is excited at first, but settles down after 10 minutes. He will “sit” quite readily, and loves to lay near you and preferably be touching you. He will sit and lean into you and look up at you with a wonderful smile for some loving. His beautiful eyes looking into yours are something special! He does not get on the furniture w/o an invitation. Bear rides very well and quietly in the car.
Night-Time : He lays right down on the floor by our bed and sleeps quietly all night. He is patient about getting up, and he will wait until we are ready to get up! Although we have a dog bed for him in the bedroom, he prefers to sleep on the floor.
Counter Surfer : YES!
Balls & Toys : Bear is not especially interested in balls, and he does not fetch. He has several interesting toys that have rawhide treats entwined, or inside a Velcro part (that he has to open) and he likes them. He also likes bones with peanut butter inside! These assist in settling him down when we want him to have some Quality Quiet Time.
Housebroken : 100% Perfect, no accidents at all.
Gentle Leader : We are working on it and it makes a huge difference! Bear is still learning to go for a walk (or run) on a leash – he loves his walks! Bear is STRONG, but with a Gentle Leader all is well.
Children : Suggest age 10 and over – he is frisky and could (unintentionally) knock over little ones.
Forever Family : Bear would be a natural for experienced owners with an active lifestyle and time to spend with a golden.
Bear is a wonderful, happy Golden, who loves everyone. Bear is very smart and wants to please – he would enjoy obedience training! He rarely barks, though he is a good watch dog at night. Given his background (living outside), his behavior, and interest in chipmunks and squirrels, we wonder if Bear was trained as a hunting dog.
