Buddy Harlan 06-050 [1]

2/22/06: Buddy Harlan Holly is a 10 year old Hound/Lab cross. He isn't sure how he got mixed up with our Golden Armada, but he's happy he has a warm, soft place to lay his head and figures it beats being on a rusty chain in cold weather.

Buddy Holly is a senior boy who looks and acts like a 6 month puppy. He was rescued in Iowa from a very abusive, neglectful situation and in spite of his circumstances is a wonderful loving and gentle guy. It's amazing how dogs can be so forgiving of mean humans. He has a history of escaping and finding his way to the humane shelter...as if he was telling them to get him free from his circumstance. Buddy was named Buddy Harlan since there are so many Buddys in foster care, but I think he's more of a Buddy Holly. He's part hound, so he's definitely "musical."

Buddy Holly has been in temporary foster care for about two weeks. He's been neutered, had some lumpy bumps removed, got a clean bill of heath, a teeth cleaning AND a bubble bath! Did someone say SPA treatment?

Buddy is small, about the size of a Beagle and he weighs a very trim 49 pounds. He could stand to put on about 5 pounds. He could be part Bassett or Beagle, and definitely some Lab. His mix gives him a very puppy quality! His nose is a little short, his ears too big and he has big paws for such short legs! He's also a little bandy-legged, so he looks like he just got off a horse. I know, what an image, huh?

This little man is a sweetie. He's affectionate without being needy, lays nicely during meals and at bedtime and doesn't have issues with other dogs or kids. He likes to toss his toys up in the air and puppy play bow them. He's definitely got the exuberance of a younger dog!

Buddy does have a dark side. (Cue the Star Wars Music!) Buddy is interested in cats...as in cats as an entree or side dish. Not, cats as friends. We have a year old kitten and an old fat cat and both are being sequestered during Buddy's stay. Being cats, they've been pretty vocal about their displeasure over their arrangement, which seems to get Buddy even more interested. Buddy will need to go to a cat free home. His prey drive is very high, and it's fair to say he probably nabbed a squirrel, rabbit or chipmunk in his time on the lam. I think a younger dog could be retrained to live with cats, but given his history and age, this might be one old dog with a trick too hard to unlearn. Given his history of escaping, it would also be ideal for him to go to a home with a fenced yard.
