Meet Caesar, an 11 year old Golden Retriever with a heart of gold in a small body! Caesar appears to have the "dwarf" gene, as he looks like a very short legged Golden. If you can imagine a body with the build of a Bassett Hound, but the head and coat of a Golden, you have this little sweetie! His legs are about 6 inches long, and when he loses some weight (he was free fed in his previous home, and it doesn't look like he ever missed a meal!) he will be a nice sized, little guy. He is just adorable!
Caesar came to us last weekend from a home that loved him very much but just couldn't keep him any longer. He has seen the vet, and aside from being overweight, he is a healthy guy. He apparently had mild seizures in the past so he is on a low dose of Phenobarbital, which is inexpensive and appears to be doing the trick. He does have a broken tooth that will be pulled this week, but that's it.
Now for all the good stuff. Caesar is a love bug but not in a clingy way, he just wants to be in the same room with you. He enjoys running and sniffing outside, but when you go in the house he is content just to hang out quietly. He hasn't really been interested in toys, but last night he picked up a nylabone and chewed on it for the first time, so maybe his tooth is just too sore for him to enjoy carrying stuff in his mouth. He has not had a single accident in the house, and I would deem him completely trustworthy alone. He is crated right now when we aren't home as the resident Queen Sassy isn't too sure she likes him yet and she can really be a pill. He and Wyatt had free run of the house for several hours while Sass was in "school", and they were just fine together, so he doesn't really need the crate.
Caesar loves, loves, loves his walks. When we get up in the morning he runs outside and stands at the gate, waiting for someone to put his leash on him and open the gate. He just loves all the sniffs, and walking along with the big dogs, it is quite the sight. We are walking him a little shorter distance than the big dogs, until he loses a little weight, and he often gets a little short walk in the evening as well. We come back after touring the neighborhood and he really enjoys rolling in the grass, I'll try to get a picture of that, it is very cute.
Our neighbor brought her 16 month old niece Lydia over this weekend, and Caesar was very patient as she petted his head, so I'd say he is kid tested. He gets along with all the dogs he has met, and while interested in the cat, he really just wants to get a good look and sniff at him. This is a really mellow dog, with a nice energy level who won't drive you crazy and just wants to hang out with you. So if you are an approved applicant who wants a Golden personality in a compact body, send an email to placement
ragom [dot] org and we'll try to set up a meeting!
