Please welcome Champ to the RAGOM family. Champ, along with his little foster brother Cocoa (14-279) were found wandering the countryside in Alabama and have now made their way to Minnesota to start living the Golden Life.
Champ is every bit the typical, handsome Golden Retriever. Although he can’t prove it we’re convinced that he is a pure bred. He smiles a lot, loves all people, leans in for your attention, and likes to be wherever you are. At some point he was obviously loved and cared for as he has no fear of either humans or dogs. He knows how to “sit” on command and, when he feels like it, he grudgingly acknowledges that he understands “down” as well.
In the week that we’ve had him he has had no accidents in the house. He loves kids. He walks well on a leash although he has a strong prey drive and would like to chase squirrels and any birds that he spots. Unfortunately his definition of prey includes cats. He will bark at and chase them. Although he hasn’t harmed our kitties we feel that his adopted home should NOT include cats.
Champ and his little buddy Cocoa have settled right into our house and routine. They get along well with resident dog (RD) Harley and foster-sister Sandy. Champ weighs about 65 lbs. and, while he will jump up on the bed for a quick pet, we’re quite happy that he will jump right down again and will go to sleep on the rug next to our bed. We think that both boys are about 8 years old. Champ has a bit of white on his muzzle but still has plenty of younger dog energy.
His favorite indoor activity is hanging around in the kitchen watching everything that’s going on. He doesn’t beg or push for food but will stand and watch and then finally lie down and keep a half opened eye on things. We have some evidence of counter-surfing while we were out of the house so we’ve had to pay some more attention to how we leave things if we’re out on errands. He has free roam and has been home without us for 5 – 6 hours with no problems.
Champ has had his wellness check (everything checks out fine) and has an appointment to be neutered next Monday. We think that he will be ready to meet his forever family as soon as he recovers. At this point we believe that he and Cocoa are not a bonded pair although we’ll get a bit more insight about that in the next week. If indeed they are not tightly bonded they would be able to be adopted separately although it’s clear to us that they are best friends and would certainly love to live the Golden Life together. We’ll know more in a week.
