"Chansey has stolen our hearts!! To be unwanted because she is too old, just when love for her should be more golden and precious than ever!!!! It is beyond comprehensible!! We just HAVE to sponsor her, and we can only hope and pray that, with good medical care and lots of love, she can regain her health and enjoy some good golden years."

We have a new girl in the RAGOM family. Chansey came to us on Friday evening from out of town. She is purebred and is 12 years old. Chansey is in pretty poor condition. She is a taller full grown golden that only weighs about 47 pounds. She is not much more than a skeleton at this point. Her hair coat is in rough shape as well. It is quite thin and is almost non-existent in some places. From what little information we received from the shelter, I think Chansey was an outdoor dog and judging from her elbows it looks like she has been on concrete for some time. Her elbows have very large calluses on them. She was an owner surrender to a shelter because she was too old.

Our first night with Chansey was rough as she threw up several times. Earlier in the evening we fed her a small amount of dry dog food which she wolfed down like there is no tomorrow. She threw that up within a couple of hours. I made her some hamburger and rice and gave her a small amount of that later on and she threw that up within a short time. I was up with her in the middle of the night because she threw up a couple more times. I got up early with her and took her to the vet. They took blood for a chem panel and gave her some fluids through IV. Her gums are somewhat pale so the vet figured she was anemic but yesterday morning we weren't sure if it was due to lack of food or from something else going on. She also got an injection of anti-nausea medicine.

Since coming home from the vet yesterday, we have been giving her a tablespoon of canned ID about every hour up until bed time. So far it has all stayed down. This afternoon I started giving her a little more with good results. She still inhales it, but I am hoping we can keep increasing it over time to the point she won't be quite so ravenous. Chansey is drinking water just fine so that is good.

We heard from the vet this morning regarding Chansey's blood work. She is definitely anemic and she also has some other values that are off including some abnormal blood cells. We will be taking her back to the vet this week for X-rays and possibly an ultrasound to see if they can find any abnormalities.

Chansey's skin is in rough shape too. It looks like she has had allergies for years and they were probably not treated as her skin is quite discolored and does not look healthy at all. We will be giving her a bath today in some good oatmeal shampoo. I am sure just getting clean will help her feel better.

On a better note, Chansey has a lot more energy than you would ever expect out of a healthy 12 year old dog, much less a dog in her shape. She loves picking up bones and tennis balls and carries them around. She talks to you while she has them in her mouth and she is so cute when she does that. She loves to stay close to get pets and attention and we love giving it to her. Her tail never stops wagging.  Chansey is just a sweet, sweet, happy girl.

Please keep Chansey in your thoughts and your paws crossed that the tests we do this week does not find anything bad. After 12 years of what may have been a horrible life, I am glad she is here with us and can get a chance at the good life. She will be terribly spoiled from here on out.
