Destiny arrived at her foster home on Saturday, 4/28 after a very long trip from a puppy mill in Missouri. She was a wonderful traveler from Ankeny to Muscatine. She relaxed in her kennel and got acquainted with one of our resident Goldens, Bosco. She was frightened when we made the exit from the car and walked to the fenced yard. We let our dogs out one at a time to meet and greet Destiny. She had no problem with any of them. She was afraid of us though. She has begun to bond with me, but she is still unsure of my husband and stepson. I couldn't get her to eat anything until Sunday night. I had a small can of canned chicken that smelled too good for a hungry girl to pass up. I left it in her safe spot with her and she ate it after I left the room. She will now eat pieces of hot dogs from my hand and I even got her to eat a little bit of dry dog food. We waited until Sunday afternoon to give her a bath and she smells so much better. She has moved from her safe spot in the kitchen to her safe spot behind my husband's recliner. She moves about some with the other dogs when she thinks no one is watching her. It is going to take time to win her trust. She is improving little by little.
I took her to the vet yesterday. She weighs 56 pounds and is heartworm negative!! She has been updated on all of her shots and is scheduled to have her spay in a couple of weeks. My vet thought it would be a good idea to let her get settled in with us before we have her spayed. He said that she was in surprisingly good health for a puppy mill girl. Yea!
I will send in another update as I get to know her a little more. She has been the sweetest girl. You can tell that she wants to trust us and be like the other dogs. I am sending our first pictures of her. She is a very beautiful dark Golden. One of her ears has been chewed on some, but she is still a beautiful girl.
