Little Keesha arrived at our home last Saturday. She came to us a very shy and scared little puppy. This little girl was surrendered to the Humane Society which was full and moved on to a shelter. It's sad enough for any dog to be in a shelter let alone a puppy. Her family surrendered her because the other dogs in the house did not like her. This is why it is so important to take all facts into consideration when making a furr kid part of your home. The tempermant of the resident dogs is just as important as your commitment to a new family member. It sounds like they wanted a puppy and forgot that puppies chew on dogs ears, lunge and jump on each other, are clumsy, knock you down and like to steal toys from other dogs. Unfortunately for Keesha that meant that she needed to go. Now for the really sad part. The shelter gave Keesha the food, plastic hand test and she growled and snapped at the plastic hand. She was now going to be put to sleep. This girl is so skinny and was probably just hungry and petrified not understanding what was happening to her. The shelter called one of our wonderful volunteers Rona and got permission (thanks Konnie, Keesha sends kisses) to bring this little girl into our program. She is a RAGOM girl now and we are now in the process of finding her a new family that will love her unconditionally.
Keesha is a Border Collie, Golden Retriever mix and was born on 04.15.11. She is spayed and UTD on all shots. Currently she is recovering from kennel cough and we just found out today that she has giarda which is an intestinal thing and we will get her on meds for that too. She has the longest legs I have ever seen, her furr is curly and soft and she has the sweetest little face ever! Her furr is like velvet on the sides of her mouth. When she first arrived she would hang her head and I would have to help her raise her head. I told her "be proud of yourself little girl, you are a gem!" Now she trots through the house with her head high, YAY! This little precious girl sleeps in her crate all night without a peep, has not had one accident, sits for treats and is pretty good on the leash. She will sit for treats with the residents dogs and I make sure that she understands that each doggie gets a treat and takes turns. I have been hand feeding her and she has done well. Keesha and my resident Stella compete for toys a lot, but I intervene and swap toys with one another. She is somewhat of a hoarder and at times I will find her by the dining room table with all of her babies. I gather them and we pass them out to the other dogs so she understands that she needs to share. She has never been upset with me when I have done this.
Keesha would be best in a home that will exercise her devotedly. The Border Collie in her will want to be exercised and would probably love to do some type of agility and would be a great running partner (when she gets older of course). Obedience classes are a must for all dogs, but most definitely a puppy. Keesha is very smart and is a quick learner. She understood out routine quickly. We went back to work today and was crated and my nice neighbor came over to let her out to go potty and exercised her mid-day. Remember a puppy cannot be left alone for more than 4 hours without having a potty break.
In summary, Keesha would like the following in her forever home:
Commitment to exercise her as required for a puppy and her Border Collie breed.
Commitment to bring her to obedience classes.
Children above the age of 10 as she can knock over small children and she is a toddler herself : )
She would be fine as an only dog, but she does need to have doggie friends as she just loves other dogs.
