This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog. |
We are so incredibly glad to introduce the newest RAGOM girl, an approximately 5-year-old beautiful purebred Golden. She is a very petite 55 pounds. Lorna came to use from the Leech Lake reservation where she had been found living under a dock after having given birth to a litter of puppies. Her puppies have all found homes, but Lorna is now just so happy to be a RAGOM girl. We have been fostering for over 5 years and I honestly don't think we have ever had a happier Golden as a foster. Her tail is in constant motion and she just wants to be by her people all the time. She gets along great with our three resident Golden girls, but is most happy with her humans.
Lorna has quickly learned that inside living is a very god thing! She will not go outside unless I accompany her (which is fine as my girls never go out without me) as she seems almost afraid that she will once again be left alone outside to fend for herself. She loves the numerous dog beds and couches around the house and jumps from one to another trying to figure out which is her favorite and seems to be in awe that there are so many comfy places to rest. For now, her favorite place is anywhere close to where foster mom or foster dad are sitting.
Now, I know you may be looking at her picture and thinking, "That is not a purebred Golden," but really, she is. She is simply sporting her "Lab" look right now. Lorna came in full of mats and covered with ticks. The only way to clean her up was to shave her down. Now that all that nasty stuff is off of her, her beautiful Golden coat will grow back and she will be the gorgeous Golden girl again.
Over the last few days, we have learned this about Lorna:
1) She has not had one accident in the house. While I would not say she is housebroken as she does not ask to go outside to potty, she shows no inclination to potty inside.
2) She sleeps fantastic through the night on a dog bed by our bed and actually has to be roused in the morning out of her deep slumber.
3) She does prefer someone home with her most of the time. While she does settle down and does well in a kennel, she will whine and cry for a while.
4) She is a ferocious eater - meals are gone in seconds! I do believe that once she knows that she will always have regular meals and does not have to worry about going hungry, this will abate.
5) Along the food line - she is a counter surfer. When we are not in the kitchen, she is fine, but making dinner is quite a production with he constantly trying to jump on the counters to see "what's cooking." She is beginning to respond to "down" and I believe she will soon get that this is just not a cool thing to do.
6) She is a huge snuggler and just loves, loves to be by her people.
7) She is just now beginning to calm down for car rides and today, for the first time, she actually got in and out the car in under 10 minutes. Usually, I sit and coax her in and out with treats and it was taking quite a while!
8) Cats are NOT friends to this girl. She cannot go to a home with cats.
Really, Lorna is such a gem and will be a blessing to any family fortunate to welcome her into their home.
