Maizy (or Lazy Maizy as we call her) made it all the way to Western South Dakota last Sunday from the Bismarck, NDpuppy mill, thanks to a wonderful group of RAGOM volunteers. She traveled here via Hastings, MN. Maizy and her mill mate, Mya 07-166 traveled over 1,000 miles to find themselves a soft bed in a loving foster home. We believe that Maizy and Mya traveled further than any of the other 81 dogs and they likely are among the oldest. We estimate Maizy to be around 8 years old. She is a very pretty girl, with expressive eyes and a graying face. Since she is so light, her face looks more white than gray.
It took two days of my husband carrying her out to the yard and back into the house before she would venture out on her own. Maizy didn't eat for three days, but when she finally did, she was able to do her "business" and give us the sample the vet needed to test for parasites. We're happy to report that not only is she free of parasites, she is also heartworm negative. She does have a Grade II heart murmur and the vet wants to see her again in two weeks to be assured she isn't pregnant. We are crossing our paws that she isn't and that her slightly firm round belly is just a result of having to produce puppies over and over again. Like Mya, Maizy is also anxious to retire as a puppy maker. I've promised her that after she is spayed, we'll help her find a retirement gig that will provide her all the comforts and conveniences of which she so deserves. She is more withdrawn than Mya, so each little step forward is a milestone for this precious girl. She enjoys the other dogs and watches them for cues, so she will insist on sharing her retirement with another resident canine when the time comes.
