Makwa 14-101 was brought into RAGOM on April 27th. He is an 8 year old male Golden/Great Pyrenees mix, neutered and weighs 82 pounds. His name means Bear in Ojibwa which is fitting cause he is HUGE! No one can believe he only weighs 82lbs since he is HUGE and looks like a mini Lion! Makwa loves kids (lived with a 6 and 8 year old). His previous owner owned sled dogs therefore Makwa is extremely strong! I consider myself strong and he pulls me across the yard! Makwa's foster dad is a big bodybuilder and he can barely hold him back on a walk! So if you can't bench 300lbs you probably shouldn't adopt Makwa :) Makwa does not like cats in his space and he doesn't like other dogs in his space and will warn them with a growl. M akwa loves car rides so much that if he sees you put on your shoes, he will run to the door with excitement!
Makwa was mostly an outside dog that was allowed to sleep inside during the winter. You can tell Makwa's favorite place is outdoors. He will sleep on the deck for 8 hours and longer if his foster mom let him. He much rather be outdoors than stuck inside. He is house trained, has never been crated and is not destructive when left alone indoors. He does show signs of resource guarding toward dogs but is fine with humans. Makwa will need a tall 8' physical fence, as he has been known to jump 4' fences and bolt from doors if he gets a chance.
Makwa's previous owner has had him for 2 years. She says Makwa spent the first 3 years of his life wandering around town as a stray and then taken in by a friend for 3 years. The friend was going through a stressful time in her life and the SO took Makwa with the understanding that she would take him back when she got her life back on track – that never happened.
Makwa thinks he is a lap dog, loves loves loves attention, and loves to get close to humans. He is also very vocal. He usually will wake you up at 1am just barking (maybe he hears things?) He is a great 7am alarm clock, barking cause he's lonely :) He also barks a lot when he's outside, stranger sightings and communicating with the neighborhood hounds.
Makwa 14-101 had surgery for a broken canine tooth and he had a large tumor on his rear end removed on 5/07/14. The pathology test from the tumor should come back next week and let's hope for a benign result! Makwa has also tested positive for Lyme's disease and Anaplasmosis :(
