Welcome one of RAGOM’S newest puppies – Moe (a slightly silly name for this guy, but it really does seem to fit him now).  We’ve had Moe for a little over a week now.  Usually we would have had him posted earlier, but we really are just now beginning to see who he is.  This big guy had a pretty lonely life, even though he is only 9 months old.  He was surrendered to a local shelter when he was only 6 months old.  There he remained for the last 3 months – absolutely not the place any dog, much less a puppy, would want to be.  Why he was never adopted, I have no idea since he is so incredibly cute (big, but very cute).  Moe is a golden/lab/collie mix and he looks all lab, except for the shape of his head which is all golden.  He is a big boy at 64 pounds, but the vet says he is probably as tall as he will be (which is pretty tall), but he still has some filling out to do.  We expect he’ll gain another 10-20 pounds to reach his full size.  The funny thing about him is that he doesn’t seem to realize how big he is and he bounds around just like the puppy he is.  Outside, we laugh that he looks like a deer as he runs and leaps around the yard.

The puppy behavior and his personality have just begun to shine in the last few days.  He spent the first 4-5 days with us very scared, shy and unsure.  He found a safe place to lie and stayed there for the most part for the whole day.  We would try to entice him out, but he didn’t want any part of it.  Each day, he would move out a little bit more and while he has come so far in the last week (and has now stolen the “couch” place from our two resident goldens), he still has a ways to go.  He does not seek out us humans (he loves the dogs!) all the time, but is now wagging his tail when we come to him and give kisses.  In fact, in the morning, he comes down with FM and sits on the couch with his head on her lap until everyone else wakes up.  He is so sweet, but still seems unsure that this is really his life now and that he won’t be losing it soon.  It’s like he’s afraid to love it too much for fear that it will all go away.

Because we have spent so much time just trying to acclimate him, we haven’t been able to spend much time trying to teach him basic commands.  As a puppy, he is a blank slate when it comes to commands.  He is just beginning to “come” on occasion, but doesn’t know anything else.  We will continue to work with him.

For his forever home, Moe will most likely need the following:

  • A very patient family with at least one other dog.  He is a puppy who has never lived in a home and needs lots of training.  Another dog can help him learn and show him the ropes.  Also, he’s not really food motivated, so training can be a little more time-consuming.
  • A fenced in yard (we have him on a tie out and he does fine, but he needs lots of room to run).
  • He gets along great with kids, cats, and dogs.  No aggression of any kind and he is really starting to love getting attention.
  • No crating.  He does absolutely fine with free roam of our house.  We have left him for short periods of time and he is fine.

January 10th marked six wonderful years with our little guy Ozzie/Oswald (Moe 09-436).  This guy has totally took hold of our hearts and refuses to let go.  He has boundless energy and capacity for fun.  He really loves all other dogs and adores his big brother Gus (Buddy 05-058).  He is also totally in love with his feline sister Maddie and she feels the same way about him.  So cute to see them together.  I always say this but he is unrecognizable from the frightened boy we first met.  He used to run upstairs to the bedroom if people came to the door and now he is the first to meet them when they arrive.  He also just loves to be hugged.  Thank you foster mom Patty L for getting him ready for us and allowing him to be part of our family.  We couldn’t love him more.  Thank you RAGOM for this great guy.  Here is a picture taken of him at the cabin on January 1st (his 7th birthday).  Trying so hard to stay awake.

Wow—how quickly the last 4 years have gone by. We can’t imagine one second of it without this great little boy. Ozzie (Moe 09-436) has had a fun packed year. He is still everything we talked about in last year’s update. People continually tell us they can’t believe he is the same dog that joined our family 4 years ago. Though not as “social” as his big brother Gus (Buddy 05-058) Ozzie now really enjoys meeting new people. He and his brother stole the show this fall when they walked their dads down the aisle and served as ring bearers for our wedding in front of over 200 people. His eyes never left us as he sat quietly during the entire ceremony. I am again enclosing some pictures from his birthday last week. He is always so happy that he gets to spend it at the cabin romping in the snow or napping by the fire.

Hope you have a wonderful new year.

Today we celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of when our Ozzie (Moe 09-436) joined the family.   He has been an amazing addition to our family. For a little guy that started out so scared of the world and new people, I don’t think there is a dog that loves life more. I am attaching a picture taken on his birthday last week of Ozzie and his big brother Gus (Buddy 05-058) relaxing in front of the fire at the cabin.  He hasn’t changed much since his last update.  Still dances on his back legs, still chews on shoes left on the floor when we leave (however, after 3 years we have gotten better about leaving those shoes on the floor), still leaps into the car for any travel opportunity, and still loves to get his hugs anytime and anywhere.  The only big change this year is that he has a new best friend.  Our neighbors at the cabin rescued a sweet girl from the Humane Society and she shows up at our door every Saturday and Sunday morning wanting Ozzie to come out and play.  They adore each other and find tons of opportunities to chase and explore the Wisconsin woods together between the two cabins.  Every morning before we leave for work we tell Ozzie and Gus how happy we are that they chose us.

It has now been two years since Ozzie (Moe-09-436) joined our family. I can’t begin to describe how this amazing little guy has changed our lives. Anyone who knew him two years ago would not recognize the dog that greets them today. My favorite time of the day is walking up the sidewalk to the front door after work. I see him jumping up and down in front of the window on the door waiting for the key to turn and the door to open. He has to be hugged several times as we make the way through the house to take care of business in the backyard. Once outside his eyes never leave you making sure you don’t go away. While he waits for his brother to finish he leaps up the back steps wanting several more hugs and kisses. No matter what kind of day you have he makes it all go away.

He still gets frightened by the oddest things (like an envelope falling off a table) but new people no longer sending him running to the den or upstairs to the bedroom. He actually runs to the door to greet anyone who rings the door bell. Even if it is a door bell on TV. (Which makes us laugh but we do feel sorry for him when he realizes that there isn’t anyone at the door.)

A couple of things haven’t changed about him. One is his “devotion” to footwear. If a pair of shoes are left on the floor when you leave for the day you can be sure they will be destroyed when you return. He loves shoes or slippers. However, if they are even 6 inches above the floor he doesn’t touch them. Also, he still loves to do the dance thing. He will get up on his back legs and wave his front paws in the air when he wants you to stop what you are doing and pay attention to him. It always works too. We always stop and dance with him or just give him a huge hug.

He loves all other dogs but he is especially devoted to his big brother Gus (Buddy 05-058) and I love saying good bye to them in the mornings all intertwined and asleep at the foot of the bed. He doesn’t have an aggressive bone in his body and totally doesn’t understand when other dogs don’t feel the same way. He is a total Velcro dog and is happy to be wherever we are. The Wisconsin cabin is his favorite place in the world and he can’t get in the car fast enough on Friday nights to head north. He loves the car and is happy to join you for any errand that involves traveling.

He is truly the sweetest and most loving little boy. When our 19 year old cat was in her last days, he knew something was wrong and would just sit on the floor with her and give little licks on the top of her head. His energy and loving personality have helped us get through losing our first dog and then our cat this summer.

His only fault is that he takes the worst pictures ever. None of the pictures we take seem to capture his joy or new love of life. In every picture he looks like he just got caught eating the holiday ham or something. I am including a picture of him resting on the bed at the cabin after a long winter’s walk. He is just a great great dog.

Thank you RAGOM.

Well, it has been one year since this little guy became part of our family and it is hard to know where to begin.  We had lost our beloved Golden Zeus earlier in 2009 and we had determined that our big guy Gus (Buddy 05-058) really needed a new companion.  Gus was a crazy, funny, goofy dog that just went into a funk after his brother died.  Actually we were all in a funk and needed some help so back to RAGOM we went.  So many wonderful dogs to pick from but there was something about this one fellow that kept us coming back to his page.  He looked like he needed us as much as we needed him.  Once we met Moe 09-436 we knew he was the one.  We did have to change his name to Oswald (Ozzie) because we already had a resident cat with the name Mo.  When we picked Ozzie up he was so very timid and scared of everything but he adored Gus.  By the end of the first week he seemed to start feeling the same way about us too.  He still is a little shy around new people and if the house gets too full of friends and family he will sneak off to the den to rest a bit but will soon be back in the mix.  You wouldn’t even recognize him as the same dog from January 2010.

Probably our favorite thing about him is that he looks on the world as one big adventure and is always having the time of his life.  Every weekend we travel to the cabin in Wisconsin and every weekend it is like it is his first time there.  So much to see and do.  When we start out on our walks each morning he has to keep running back to you 3 or 4 times jumping in the air to tell you how excited he is to be going on this walk.  He also loves to be hugged.  Sometimes he just interrupts his nap or playtime with a toy to get come up to you to get a hug or give you a quick kiss.  It is like he needs to remind you how much he loves being part of the house.  He then goes right back to what he was doing before.  And he loves to watch TV.  Especially nature shows or Animal Planet.  He just sits and stares at the screen watching all of the action.

All we can say is thanks RAGOM for giving us one more great addition to our family.  We are looking forward to many more years of fun and love with this great little boy.

It has been way too long since our last update, but during that time the "real Moe" has truly emerged.  For such a long time, he was scared, unsure, and somewhat reserved.  Well, all that has now changed (except for when we have people over - he retreats to a safe place and sneaks out to spy on everyone - he thinks he is so brave when he finally gets the courage to do a "run-through" of where everyone is, but then he does retreat again).   With us, he is a completely different dog (and he will be with any forever family).  He is very definitely a snuggler, loves to be petted, and is learning how to play.  (He has always loved to play with our two goldens, but seemed to not know how to play with humans.  When we are on the ground playing with our resident goldens, he'll come over and put his big paw in the action and seems to be thinking "that really looks like fun, but how do I do this."  He usually pulls back for a minute but then romps (or gallops!) right back over and joins in)  He is truly the sweetest guy and is all puppy, despite his size (which, really hasn't changed all that much - he is about 70 lbs but very tall and looks very much like a skinny lab).

A few important things about Moe:

(1)  He loves his kennel (we didn't use one at first, but pulled it out when he started chewing everything around - he was very definitely teething!).  He sees us putting on our coats to go and runs right in without us saying anything.  Also, this is his safe place he goes when we have people over (we leave the door open for him).

(2) House training is pretty much done - he will occasionally have an accident, but it very rare now.

(3) He loves to be outside and loves to run!  We have a fenced in yard and he loves running around.  He is a little Houdini and manages to find his way out of the fence every once in a while (That's why we still go out with him every time), but he never runs away - his favorite thing to do is get out of the fence and then run back and forth with our resident dogs on one side and he on the other)

(4) He really would do best in a home with another dog - he seems to really look to ours for guidance on what to do and he absolutely loves to play - so unless you are ready to play all the time with him, another dog can help him expend some of his energy.

(5) He loves shoes - no, not to wear, but to chew on.  We have lost a few pairs (a few very expensive ones!) and know that we have to keep them out of his reach.  Unfortunately every once in while we forget and he pounces on the opportunity to grab one.   We can't quite figure this obsession out - he has tons of toys and chewies to chew on, but shoes are his thing.   Just remember to keep them out of his reach!!

(6) He loves meal time.  When it is getting close to breakfast or dinner, he starts pacing around where the food is.  He will grab his bowl (or one of the other two) and put it down on the floor.  The minute the food  goes in, he attacks - the entire thing is gone in less than 20 seconds!  Since our two residents are slower eaters, he then circles around them looking for any stray pieces and licks their bowls when they are done to make sure every last morsel is gone.

(7) He does not have an aggressive bone in his body.  There is no resource guarding of any kind and in fact when one of the other dogs tries to take his toys, he just lets them.

Moe celebrated his first birthday yesterday and is so ready to go to his forever home.  Please contact your placement advisor if  you're interested in this sweet, happy boy.

What a difference a week makes!  Moe has emerged from his scared, shy self to become a typical puppy.   He loves to play, chews everything, and has actually become quite a snuggler.  We are making progress on his training-he now comes when called, is beginning to “sit”, and is almost house trained (we are still learning his signals for when he needs to go out).  The cutest thing we are working on “dance” – he loves to be outside and when he gets out there he starts prancing around.  He’ll get up on his hind legs and jump around and looks like he is dancing so we decided to work with him on doing this on command.   He’s not sure what we are talking about, but he has lots of fun doing it.

While Moe has become very comfortable in our home and realizing how great it is to be in a house and part of a family, he is still nervous when meeting new people.  He’s getting braver every day and we continue to introduce him to new people and dogs and he is doing great.  This big guy does not have an aggressive bone in his body and, once he is sure that he is safe, he loves to play.

A few things needed for his forever home are definitely another dog – while he likes playing with us, he LOVES playing with our two dogs – and a fenced in yard.  We have had him on a really long tie-out, so he has room to run, but we feel bad when he is playing and gets tangled up.  I would love for him to have the freedom to run unrestrained in a safe area.  Contact your placement advisor if you are interested in this big, lovable puppy.
