Meet Annabelle, or Belle as we like to call her. Belle is an 8-year-old female that weighs in at a perfect 55 pounds of sweetness! Belle is very timid. She will need a home with a fenced yard and needs to lead a quiet life with another larger dog. Belle startles easily. She has a wonderful gentle nature and will need a patient family to help her blossom into all she is meant to be as a "Golden" girl. Her initial vet appointment went very well. We are waiting for blood work and some tests to be completed. She has not been spayed, so that is in her near future.

Belle has been an outside dog and is learning about what this living in a house with humans is all about. She is slowly making progress to her new life!

To the wonderful RAGOM Staff and Volunteers:

My Miss Annabelle #13-403 left us yesterday and my heart is sad and heavy.  We adopted Annabelle back in October of 2014 and it was the best thing I think we ever did!

I am beyond sad that we only got to enjoy her for such a short time.  What this amazing dog accomplished in the few short months she was with us is truly remarkable.

In the few months she was with us she truly learned how to be a dog and enjoy life.  Her tail that was always tucked now waged.  She learned what it was like to go on walks and she loved them.  She would come running out to the entry to get hooked up to go.  She learned what dog toys were and bones and boy did she enjoy them.  She was so brave and just the sweetest dog.  She got to enjoy so many things.  She learned to LOVE treats and pancakes on Sunday mornings were her all-time favorite.  Last week we got to go back to her foster Mom’s home and she got to play with all her old dog friends and visit with her foster mom and dad.  It was such a special day for all of us.   Annabelle was finally in her forever home and living the life she always deserved.

Today my heart and my home are empty.  I miss her so much.  What I wouldn’t do to have more time with this special dog.

I love you Annabelle!

Annabelle met a fantastic couple who are committed to helping her continue to grow and blossom. While we're sad to have Annie leave our home, we're so happy that she has been adopted and has her own forever home now. Annie is a lucky lady and we could not have hoped for a happier ending for this sweet girl. Now it's time for her to relax, settle in and enjoy the good life!

Annie had a wonderful vacation with Auntie K. She obviously was in good hands and we think she came back even more confident, even more interested in what's going on around her. Apparently while she was with Auntie K, she was able to continue her dining habits of choice - that is, eating while standing on the couch. Go figure. We can't remember how she taught us this, but she apparently taught Aunt K the same thing. And she was able to find a special love seat to call her own on vacation, no roughing it for this little girl!

We've recently added another foster dog to our house and Miss Annie is not at all excited about this newest addition. The newest foster is a rambunctious puppy who hasn't quite figured out that Annie is the queen of the house yet. Annie was not very happy the first day, but slowly, the puppy has convinced her that it's fun to play chase in the yard and the two of them have been seen almost playing, almost. I think in another week, we'll see Annie joining in more in the backyard puppy romps.

What we are really enjoying is how much more engaged Annie has become. When you call her name, she slowly comes to be petted. If you're petting another dog (except the puppy), she comes over and gives a nudge to be part of the lovefest. She continues to slowly blossom and enjoy herself. Annabelle woke up this morning and put on her big girl pants and trotted right upstairs to see what I was doing at the computer. No coaxing, no pleading, she just decided to do it on her own! We loved it! She loved it! But after a bit, she decided it was time for breakfast, so she scooted downstairs and waited patiently for us to figure it all out. Did I mention that she's a creature of habit and routine? She always enjoys her meal!

Annie is headed to visit her Aunt K. for a few days. She's packing light, just taking her favorite dog bed and some food. What more does a girl need? She'll get to visit with her old buddies and enjoy a bit of an extended sleepover. Lucky Annie. We know she'll be in good hands and bet she will have taken a few more brave steps into the Golden Life she deserves! Check out these photos -- we caught her in the middle of a tail wag! She's a lovely girl who is really starting to blossom. If you're ready to help her grow and learn more things (beyond checking out the home office), then please contact your placement advisor!

Good news, Annabelle fans! Miss Annabelle is starting to get into the swing of things and enjoy life's pleasures. She now comes readily when you call her -- well, about 75% of the time. And that's a huge step up for her, since it's taken her a while to really trust that venturing towards us will be a good thing. She greets us at the door and comes to be petted every time. She's even ventured into the kitchen now, another huge step. Most dogs love the kitchen, but it's taken Annabelle some time to feel comfortable and she's still not all that excited about it. Too much noise, I think. And she now comes into the house (after strolling in the fenced yard) easily.

One of the best things to watch is Annabelle running with the resident dogs in the backyard. I think she really enjoys that and she can really get some speed for a medium-sized girl! She also loves to run towards her FD who has become her best human buddy. She likes FM, but she loves FD and keeps an eye on him wherever he goes. If he goes outside without her, she finds a spot where she can get comfortable and watch him out the window.

Annabelle has not destroyed a single thing, hasn't had an accident, and I don't think she's barked at all. She's a creature of habit and loves her special bed. When she can, she enjoys a nap up on the couch and she's almost come to grips with the ceiling fan. Big steps for our little girl! If I had to name the most impressive change in Annie, it's that she is slowly starting to engage with us more and more. She's still a bit suspicious of company, but she's actually starting to enjoy her world and we think she deserves that and more!

Miss Annabelle has gained a few pounds and she looks great! She smiles and seems to be much more comfortable with us, enjoying snuggling on the couch or walking the yard with us in the evening. She wags her tail, takes treats from us carefully but happily, and enjoys the company of our resident dogs. She is still very cautious and loud noises can cause her a brief panic, but she is now starting to actually enjoy the world around her. I realized last week that she's trained me to feed her in her two favorite places, in by the couch or back in her dog bed. I didn't realize I was so easy to train, but this little girl figured it out very easily!

Annie is such a creature of habit, she would do well in a house with a quiet routine. While we'll never know just what her life was before she entered RAGOM, we're quite certain that she's enjoying the simple creature comforts of a good dog bed and the companionship of people and dogs to make sure that she lives the good life a retired girl deserves!

I'm so pleased to share more information about Annie. We're just so impressed by this little girl and how much she's grown over these months. She has the absolutely best happy dance when you come home; it is almost so surprising to see her get so excited and animated. She's such a calm dog usually, but when you come home, she pours on the welcome. Now, that's not to say that she won't panic a bit later if there's a sudden, loud noise or something she hasn't experienced before. Annie has come to trust us most of the time, but she's just not too sure about the rest of the world.

I've attached some photos of Annie doing her daily inspection of the backyard. She loves to stroll the yard with us and seems to enjoy the outing no matter how hot it is. Not all of us are that excited about the humidity, but she doesn't seem to mind. When we first started walking the backyard with her, she followed at quite a distance, darting around in case she needed to find a safe spot. Now, she gladly follows us and allows us to reach out and pet her and have those one-sided conversations that people have with their pets. She doesn't exactly romp with our pack, but she follows them closely and no longer seems to wince when they invite her to play or romp around. She's not about play -- yet -- but these dogs keep trying and as she slowly relaxes and builds trust with us all, I bet someday she'll play one of their silly dog games with them. Why, we've even seen her sniffing the toys in the dog basket, so we know she's curious about it all. I think she just doesn't have any experience like this and still hasn't quite sorted it all out.

Annie is now very excited about her food and time to eat - she's figured out the pattern of this routine and knows where to be and when. Although she does like to sleep in, she gladly gets up when the other dogs start doing their "Feed Me" dance. We've been very pleased that Annie has started taking treats from our hands now. Little steps for this girl, but very positive growth. She sailed through July 4th fireworks without too much problem, although the first few rocket noises did cause a bit of panic. After that, she settled into her favorite dog bed and called it a day.

Annabelle is turning into a lovely girl. She's a brave girl, I find myself saying that often. It's clear that she's frightened of things we take for granted. Ceiling fans, an occasional loud noise - but she continues to grow and learn that there are good things in store for her daily. She has learned to really enjoy being petted and will now come when called so that she can jump up on the couch and be petted. She's also learned the joys of following the pack to look out the front windows and see what might be roaming in the front yard. An occasional bunny or deer gets her as excited as the rest of the dogs and it's just wonderful to watch her blossom. She has expanded her 'safe spots' now to include her special dog bed in the bedroom and it's not unusual to find her napping and enjoying some quiet alone time. This is much different from when she first met our pack and seemed to be overwhelmed by the household in general.

Annie thrives on the routine of the household and I think she looks forward to getting her anti-anxiety pill each morning in what we call Annie's Cheese (ok, American Cheese to the rest of the world). She takes her pill readily and then eats her morning cup of dog food and then settles in to see what the day brings. She's not an active dog, although we think her favorite thing in the whole world is squirming on her back in wet grass, something she does every morning with much relish. It's still her favorite activity. She's not particularly excited about rain and can go outside and do her business faster than any of the other dogs when it's raining. She's a smart thing!

Annie isn't particularly enthused about going for car rides so we have not really pushed it at this point. She seems very happy letting the other dogs go on adventures and has not been destructive at all while she stays home awaiting their return. She does a great happy dance whenever someone comes home; it doesn't seem to matter how long they've been away.

Annie continues to learn about the joys of being a dog. If you have a quiet home and can provide her the support and routine she thrives on, please talk with your placement advisor about Annie!

Attention, Fans of Annabelle! We have great news! After lots of thinking and conferring with experts, we decided to try Annabelle on some anti-anxiety medications, and they have really helped her relax and have opened the door for her to enjoy life a bit more than she had been. The medications are very cheap - only $4 for a month's supply and she takes just one pill a day. She takes it easily if it's folded into a small piece of cheese. No problem at all. With the medications, she now goes in and out of the house much more easily, roams the backyard with the rest of the pack, and welcomes us home looking eager to be included in the pack welcome home dance along with the resident dogs. The difference is night and day -- we're so glad for the advice we received and feel that Annabelle is now going to be able to enjoy experiences that will build her confidence so she can become a welcomed four-legged family member. I don't want to get too far ahead of Annabelle on this; we're talking big steps for Annabelle this week, but she still has some ways to go. But I know there's a fan club of Annabelle supporters and I wanted to let everyone know that this little sweetheart is on the road to enjoying life.

Annabelle is still showing us great house manners and has not had any harsh words with any of the resident dogs. She eats her food with much more relish than she did initially and has even been seen carrying a toy around and chewing on a Nylabone.

We're so pleased about Annabelle's week - I hope these photos give you a sense of what this sweetheart is up to.

I need to give an update on how I have been doing. I have been making baby steps and have made some "firsts" that I need to tell you about. Foster mom and foster dad had some visitors for a couple of days and when the 7th-grader would lay on the love seat. I was right there with him and loved all of the attention and the pets. Now for my other "firsts." Again, foster mom and foster dad had a visitor that had adopted from them in Dec. Auntie A came to visit and I really liked that. For the first time since coming here, I picked up a toy and carried it around. I also took it to the love seat and was sitting with it and laying with it in my mouth. I then took it and jumped in the overstuffed chair and sat there. I have never gotten up and sat in that chair before. Then the third thing that I did that day was to come up all by myself to Auntie A and let her pet me for over five minutes. Foster mom was really surprised. She was proud of me. Even though a lot of my progress is one step forward and two steps back, I am doing well. I am being moved to a new foster home so I can continue in my progress (away from Misty whom I came with, but she was adopted by foster mom and foster dad), but right at first, it really will be two steps backward and one step forward until I get used to my new foster home and their routine and I get over being so scared of the new place. I will send in a new update from my new foster home in a few days when I settle down and learn the new routine.

Foster mom has told me that I am WAAAYYYYY overdue to send in an update on myself, so I'd better get busy. I am still making baby steps, but some days it is two steps back and one step forward. My tail is up more now than it is tucked between my legs like it was when I first got here. When my resident brother and sisters are getting pets and lovin', I come over now for my share also. Foster mom and dad had company a couple of weeks ago, and boy, did foster mom see changes in me. When Erik came in, I came up to him for some pets, which surprised foster mom. When he sat on the loveseat, I right away jumped up there with him and stayed. I must have thought that the loveseat was really comfy, because ever since, I think that the loveseat is mine, mine, mine. I have taken up residence on it. This couch stuff is pretty cool. Sometimes I share it with one of my resident brother or sister, and then other times I just take up the whole thing. I still pace some, but since I have taken up residence on the loveseat, I do not do that as much. I have put on some weight and do not look so skinny as I did when I came. Once in a great while, I will eat just outside of my crate, but for the most part, I will not eat unless I am fed in my crate. You cannot watch me while I am eating or I will not eat. I came in with Misty 13-404, but she has been adopted by foster mom and foster dad. I follow Misty more than I do the resident brothers and sisters, so I really need to get into my very own furever home with a big, confident dog, so I can learn to grow even more. Please contact your placement advisor if that furever home is yours.

Sunday, February 23, 2014

I still get frightened with a lot of the noises, but I am making little baby steps with a lot of things. I have learned to leave the cats alone. My tail now wags a lot, instead of always being between my legs. I am eating really well. I still like to eat in my crate, but foster mom is working on me eating outside of it, but I still need to be away from everyone else before I will eat. Foster mom says it is like I do not want anyone to watch me eat. I now come up for pets every time foster mom or foster dad is petting one or all of the other dogs. I am still crated at night and when no one is home during the day, but that is mainly to help me with not wanting to potty in the house. I am doing very well with that with only an occasional accident, but they have mainly been because I was just not taken out in time. I feel safe in my crate, even if just to lay in it with the door open. But foster mom had been sometimes keeping the door shut so I can be out with everyone else. When she does that and I am not doing my walking around, I am sitting/laying on a dog bed by the sliding glass door. But now, some of the time when foster mom leaves the door open to the crate, I will still lay on the dog bed. So, foster mom says that is good for me. I've learned that the bones and the antlers are a pretty good thing to chew on. Once the bitter, bitter cold and all of this snow goes away, then I will be able to go on some walks. These country roads are not very good at this time. I do run, run, run all around the backyard in this snow. Foster mom says that sometimes when I do that, I look like a crazy woman. But she says that it is good for me to run around like that and get the exercise. Foster mom and foster dad think that I am just the sweetest thing and they tell me that all the time.

Thursday, January 2, 2014

First off, I want to thank Team Hudson and Santa for their donation of a mitten for me, and to Kay and Joe for their donation of a holly for Misty and me. I really appreciate it and it really helps us puppers. Thanks so much again. I have moved to my new foster home with my kennel pal Misty. Since I have come, I have been spayed and had a mammary tumor taken out. The tumor was benign. I did not feel well for a couple of days, but I am fine now. I weigh 50.9 lbs. Foster mom is feeding me three times a day when she can. I am a little on the skinny side. I have some puppy mill tendencies, but we are working on them. I now will go outside and come back in on my own. I am coming to foster mom and foster dad for pets and loving, and I am also wagging my tail more and more. Foster mom saw me chewing on a bone the other day and it sure did make her smile. I am frightened of some loud noises and I do not like sudden movements around me as I startle easily. I really do not like getting into the car, but once I am in the car I sit right down and do not move. I have made some baby steps since coming to my new foster home and I know that I will make more as time goes by. Foster mom and foster dad say that I am a real sweetie.
