Rosa has come to join the RAGOM family and we are so excited to have her with us.  She has lots of little issues that we need to learn about.  Rosa’s three sisters are also part of the RAGOM family, Zoey, Lena and Sally all came from the same breeder and the same litter.  We don’t know a lot about Rosa’s heart but next week we will learn more about that.  Rosa’s back and front end are pretty weak, so she needs to gain LOTS of muscle.  Her front paws are not quite right either, so we will get them looked at tomorrow.  I am guessing she just needs to gain muscle and they will be good to go, but we need to make sure.

Rosa will be meeting with Dr. Ralph on the 30th to get a picture of her heart to see what is going on there.  Rosa is VERY underweight.  It is to extreme, when I gave her a bath (yep she SMELLED) you can see every rib, vertebra and bone formation.  But trust me, we will get some weight on right away.

We will tell you more tomorrow after our vet appointment!

Hello,

We adopted "Rosa - 09-134" in 2009 .... we apologize for not sending regular updates, but wanted to share how well she is doing!  She is now known as Bella and she is an outgoing, sassy, playful, snuggling, beautiful golden retriever!!  She loves to play with her big fur-brother, chew on sweet potato chips, run after her frisbee, and lay in her chair or snuggle with mom and dad on the couch!  She has been an amazing addition to our family and we love her more than words!! Her are some pics .... she is happy, healthy, and hilariously funny!!

Our Best,

The L Family

Rosa has had such an amazing few weeks.  She is now left alone for 5 hours at a time during the day.  Foster Dad had to go back to the office, so he comes home for lunch and I get home a little earlier than normal.  It has been a great experience for her and now she will understand her new life.

Her new mom will also come home at lunch to play with her and her new brother!  Yep, Rosa will be going home on Saturday!  She is one lucky little lady.  We have been accident free for over a week now, so that is great!  She is sleeping now next to one of the big girls at night – no more crate since she is crated during the day and she sleeps all night without any problems.  Well I should say she sleeps until Stevee decides to start wondering!

Rosa went in for her leg x-rays and they continue to grow and are doing okay.  With a lot of love and patience, this little girl will be just fine.  Her heart Murmur is very slight now that we got her other surgery out of the way so RAGOM has decided not to bring her in for an ultra sound.  I trust Dr. Larry and he felt it was slight, so I have to go with that.

We have had the privilege to foster so many dogs – I think the last count was 120 some and this girl has stolen our hearts.  I love hearing about all our previous foster and try to touch base just to see how they are.  Rosa will always be in our minds!

I cannot believe how fast time is going with Rosa – she is the PERFECT house guest and loves everyone.  As you can see from the picture Mistee is still having to share her crate.  Honestly, we never shut this crate door, it is nice and roomy, but it is Mistee’s however everyone seems to love this one.  So it is a community crate.  Really I don’t ask the dogs to kennel up – they just do it.  Weird if you ask me.

Rosa’s surgery site is healing great and has NO signs of infection and has gained another 5 pounds and is finally starting to feel like a dog.  We are still feeding her three times a day – the morning and night are up to 1 ½ cups of food and after noon 1 cup.  She eats every little bit and goes looking for more!

Rosa still sleeps through the night and never makes a peep until Stevee wakes everyone up.  She sleeps next to Stevee, so they always get up at the same time.  Rosa has not had an accident in the house in 4 days and definitely has the idea of potty training down.  It helps that we are able to let her out more often, but whenever she is in the play pen area, she wants to keep that clean.

Rosa loves to play with the big girls, she is starting to like her little walks, loves to run (but remember she is not suppose to) and just an all around great girl!  Rosa will be going back in to get her second set of puppy shots next week and with any luck she will see the Ultra Sound guy in a few weeks to learn more about her heart.  However, the surgeon felt that her heart murmur was not going to be as bad as Zoey’s and Sally’s so that is wonderful.

Rosa’s legs are starting to grow into a gangly teenager and she is so darn cute!  She is finally losing her puppy hair, so that will be nice.  She is going to be a beautiful blond golden with lovely wings!

She is looking for her forever family, so if you are willing to take a chance on the cutest pup around, she would love to meet you, and you bet she will be at the next Petco event, come and see the incredible change in her!

I just have to say I have one of the most resilient little girls around.  Add to that, she has a total of 3 sponsors, how cool, thank you Linda, Connie, Dennis and Joann.  Without Rosa's sponsors we could not get the help this little girl needed.  Thanks to your love and compassion she has made it through the most dangerous surgery and did great.

Rosa went in for her pre-op work up at 7:30 yesterday morning and by 9:30, I was sitting all alone, holding my breath that everything would work out for the best.   Rosa did really well, they found her Small and Large Intestine, Colan and part of her stomach inside her pericardium sac (not sure if I have that word right, but it is the sac that surrounds the heart).  Dr. R. was able to pull all these organs out of the sac and stitch that up and the Diaphragm since that had a hole too.  Since she was open, she was also spayed!!

Rosa was out of surgery by 11:00 and I was told to come and get her around 5.  We got a call at 4 telling us to hold off until 7, since Rosa was having a few breathing issues.  But all was fine when we went to get her.  She was ready to come home.  We brought her home and she went potty and pooh right away - good girl!!!  She than wanted some food, so we gave her a little and that went great.  So by 9 we were off to bed and she slept most of the night except for a small potty break at 2:30.

When I got up at 5, she was not going to be left behind.  She was done sleeping and did not care if I was just going to get ready for work, she was coming with.  So off to the shower we went with bones in hand.  She just played in the bathroom and made sure I knew she was not tired and that she wanted to play.

Hello Rosa, did the doctor not tell you, NO PLAYING rough or running for 4 weeks.  Um, she does not understand that concept at all.  After I was ready we went out to the deck again to potty and stretch our legs, she hit the snow and this time it was like a race track.  WRONG little one, you can not run, you must be calm, you can walk around and make snowballs, but no running please...  After 10 minutes of putting a halt on all playing activities we went in and she wanted to eat.  I gave her 1/2 her normal amount this morning and put her in the play pen area (8X8 area) and told her to be a good girl, it was now time for me to go to work.

Rick was than woken up 5 minutes later to howling.  No more sleeping at our house.  Rosa wanted company and she wanted it now.  She had a great day at the house today and the next 4 weeks could be tough, trying to keep her quiet and calm..  But we wanted to let everyone know she did great and now she will be looking for her forever home with someone that will love and care for her.

I included a picture of Rosa's surgical incision, you can not see it very well, but it is about 6 to 7 inches long.  It is well over half of her tummy.

First Rosa would like to say thank you to Auntie Linda Cook for coming to visit at Pet smart, Linda is her special sponsor that is helping pay for some of her care.  Linda it was so wonderful to meet you and thank you so much for caring to sponsor this little girl.  She can use all the help she can get.

Now for what is happening with Rosa.  Today she went in for her ultra sound.  Dr. Ralph was not thrilled but he also was encouraged.  Both the large and small intestine are wrapped around Rosa’s heart and thus we could not see the heart at all.  That is the bad because now we could not see if she had the same heart issues as Zoey, Sally and Lena.  So Dr. R. is going to go into this surgery blind.  The thing is, Rosa does not have a chance to survive without the surgery so we really have to do it.  The good news is all her other organs seem to be in the right area, so it is only the small intestine that is around the heart.

Rosa had another bath tonight, she is starting to look a little better as you can see in this picture, but she is still real thin.  I was told she only gained 2 pounds this past week, we were hoping it was more.  But we wanted her nice and clean before tomorrow’s surgery.

Please everyone keep her in your thoughts and prayers.  Once she gets through this we will start looking for her forever home.

Rosa is continuing to gain weight each and every day. She does not eat a lot at one time, but if you leave her food out she will keep grazing each hour, a little at a time I think is better than just a large amount.

So we have food available to her throughout the day and take it away for good around 7 pm.  She is eating almost 2 cups of food a day now.  She really likes it when we add her wet food to it in the morning and at 5 pm. That always goes right away.

I think her front paws are improving too.  She is starting to actually walk on the pads.  Now Rick thinks I am dreaming this, but I really think she is gaining muscle.  I figure she has to with all the jumping around she does.

Rosa LOVES going outside and playing on the deck with the other girls.  She does not have the potty outside concept, but we continue to work on it every day.

Rosa wants us to tell her Sponsor Linda Cook, that she is planning to be very Brave when she meets with Dr. R. next week.   Thank you for sponsoring her, it means the world to us.

I still have not heard if Rosa will meet with the Ultra Sound Doc. On Monday, but when we hear, we will let everyone know.

Thanks for watching Rosa’s story and we will see you on Saturday!

Rosa, Rick and I would like to thank Linda Cook for being Rosa’s sponsor – Rosa is going to need all the help she can get the next few weeks.  Rosa will have a very exciting and eventful day on Tuesday March 31st.  Rosa will be going to visit Dr. R. on Tuesday with the intention of doing possibly one to three surgery’s in one.  I have heard many scenarios and have no idea what the correct one is.  I heard that she would be hospitalized just for the day and come home so we can monitor her from here, she would be sent to the ER for monitoring or worse case scenario, would not make it through surgery.

Let’s talk about her surgeries.

First possible surgery – Diaphragmatic Hernia surgery

Dr. Larry did the Barium x-ray and found that her small intestines have entered the chest cavity and wrapped around the heart.  Unfortunately Rosa has a rare situation because her hernia involves the pericardium (sac around the heart), thus the surgery will be a little trickier but still good prognosis.  The one unknown here is how is her heart?  We are hoping she is the lucky one and does not have any heart issues such as the murmur and hole like her two sisters Zoey and Sally.

Second possible surgery – Brake growth plates in front paws.

Dr. R said it is possible that Rosa’s growth plate closed prematurely.  Some of these cases can be dealt with “easily” with a puppy-age surgery and then normal growth of legs.  The X-rays have been delivered to Dr. R. so she can take a look at them and see if Rosa can also be helped with this surgery.  I am not sure what they do with this surgery, I just heard they brake the growth plates, I honestly wish I could tell you more and if I learn more about it I will let you know too.

Third possible surgery – Spay

The final one makes lots of sense to me – get her spayed as long as she is under.
So that is all we know for now.  Rosa is a very happy go lucky little girl.  She loves to play with Stevee and Sophee.  She sleeps well in her kennel at night and will sleep all night. She is NOT potty trained but we will continue working on that so she at least has the basic’s before surgery on Tuesday.  Rosa will be looking for her very special home that will continue to care for her and love her when she has healed from her upcoming surgery.  So if you would like to be that family, please let Placement know and we can talk some more about Rosa.

Rosa will be going to PetSmart for a short time on Saturday, so come early if you would like to meet this special RAGOM girl.

Monday, March 23, 2009

Well it has been a busy day with Rosa.  She went to the vet today and weighed in at 14 pounds.  She should be around 22 pounds, so we will start working on gaining weight.

Dr. T listened to Rosa’s heart and he said it was a muffled sound, he could hear her heart and did not hear a murmur to speak of, BUT, he said it was so muffled he wanted to rule out a few other things.  So we went and had an x-ray done on Rosa chest cavity.  With the x-ray complete I was brought back into the room to hear some bad news.  By the looks of this first x-ray she may have what is called a Diaphragmatic Hernia.  This is a Congenital Hernia that puppies can be born with when the diaphragm muscle is incomplete.  What happens is the muscle is formed incompletely thus resulting in an abnormal opening within the diaphragm.  What happens than is the abdominal contents such as the liver, stomach or intestines herniated through the rupture and enter the chest cavity and put pressure on the lungs.

We need to make sure this is the case so tomorrow morning she will go back and get a barium X-ray to see if the contents are a gas or solid.  If it is a solid we will work on the next step.  Rosa is suppose to meet with Dr. R the ultra sound doctor on Monday, but depending on what we find out tomorrow, that may be put on hold.

Now for the second thing that went wrong, as you can see from her pictures her front paws are not right, I was hoping it was just a muscle thing but I have been told that it looks like her Ulna growth plates are fused together thus her front legs may not grow correctly.  RAGOM will be seeking another specialist Dr. R. (ortho surgeon) on what if anything we can do for her.

So as you can see, our Baby Rosa, did not get great news today, but we are not about to give up hope for her, we just have to give her the best care we can and see where that brings us.

Rosa is a beautiful blond golden that will be looking for a very special family!  Rosa will be going to the Roseville Petsmart event on Saturday from 11 to 12:30 or 1.  So if you would like to meet this special girl, come and visit us!
