It's been a few weeks since we posted an update on Oracle and we have a lot of news to share. First, Oracle (formerly known as Ruby) is now known as Flicka. More on that later. She was with us for a few short weeks when she found a really nice forever family. When she went to stay with them, the resident dog was not as welcoming as the family would have liked and they determined that Flicka really did need a fenced in yard, which they didn't have. So, she is back with us and she settled right in very easily after a few short days away.
Why the name change? Our resident dog's name is Rupert, and Ruby and Rupert were just too close and it was causing a lot of confusion here. So, we changed her name to Flicka and she is already responding to it. Flicka came back to our house in the middle of an afternoon of lefse baking and very quickly countersurfed a few pieces of lefse. This cemented the name change to something Scandinavian -- if you haven't read the children's book series "Flicka, Ricka and Dicka", take a look. They are great stories about mischievous Scandinavian girls. Since our last update, we've learned a few new things about Flicka. First, she really, really, really loves squirrels and rabbits. She emits a non-dog like sound when she spies a rabbit and can't reach it. For this reason, it seems best if she does have a fenced in yard. Second, despite her small size, she really must be part Golden Retriever as the counter surfing has moved into full swing. So, we are going to work on that this week. Flicka told me that the lefse haul from her recent counter surfing episode was really yummy, but I don't think it really qualified as healthy dog food. Third, for a one-year old puppy, she is not super-high energy. She definitely loves her walks and needs exercise. She really loves running around and playing when she can get our resident dog to cooperate. But, she doesn't need hours of exercise each day. She's a pretty easy puppy to have around. She definitely still likes to chew things, but with a proper amount of toys, she mainly stays away from most of our people stuff. And, when she does get into people stuff, she carries it around but doesn't do much else with it -- for example, all the shoes in the house, remain intact. Finally, she is really an affectionate dog. She likes being around our older children and she won over our Thanksgiving guests, including a canine visitor that day. She got a little barky when the visiting dog didn't want to play as much as she did, but she got over it it quickly. Flicka does enjoy having another dog around, especially one who likes to play. But she did fine at home without another dog for a few days recently. We think she could be fine alone or with another dog.Flicka is back in the market for her forever family.
