Merry Christmas From Team Hudson  Merry Christmas from Team Hudson!

Meet Betty, our new foster who now resides in Sioux Falls, SD. Betty has quite an ‘itchy’ background as you will be able to tell from the very first photos of her when we got her. What you are seeing is severe staph infection of her entire body, most likely from allergies or perhaps due to something in the environment. Betty came to us in very rough shape; however, in a short time, with immediate vet care, a good ‘recipe’ for her pain, itching/oozing and medicated baths these first couple of weeks, she has come quite far already. Other than the obvious medical issue she came with, the biggest thing we noticed with Betty is her personality. Nothing less than outstanding.

Betty’s DOB is 12/24/2006, so on this Christmas Eve, she will turn 7. She had remained with the same family from puppyhood. Due to changes in family, expenses and her doing so poorly, she came into our rescue care. Once Betty was picked up, which went fine, she came to us without any problems. When she arrived, she made introductions with our pack which consists of 2 dogs and 3 cats. Went great! Betty is amazing. I need to just list her qualities here as she is just so wonderful and amazing.

  • Betty will be 7 years old on Christmas Eve this year (2013).
  • She is a taller girl, weighing about 76#.
  • She, despite her ‘shaved rough spots,’ actually has a very nice reddish coat and a beautiful feathery tail.
  • She loves to ride in the truck/car.
  • She is great with cats and could care less if they lay on her.
  • She is great with other dogs, in our home, on walks, and at the vet's office.
  • She is a beauty to walk, does super.
  • She is house trained. (A note here is that due to all the steroids we began with, we did indeed have a couple of small accidents. When you are on those, you drink a lot and urinate a lot, so that is getting better and more monitored—so now we know how long she can go. This will of course be great once she is off the meds, but she is fine.)
  • She knows sit, stay, down, roll over, come, and shake; just amazing.
  • She is great with kids. She met our grandchildren over Thanksgiving, who are 7 and 9, and she was perfect, loved the attention.
  • She is crate trained.
  • She sleeps on a large dog bed at night and the end of our bed, and all the troops are in the bedroom at night.
  • She takes treats nicely.
  • She enjoys being groomed and bathed (whew).
  • She loves to play.

So here is a beautiful, outstanding Golden girl who is one of those dogs who could adjust to just about any lifestyle. She does not need another dog, but is great with others. LOVES her human. She wants to please, play, walk, and just be a Golden who is loved. She is very agile and in great physical condition, other than we need to clean up this horrible staph infection she has apparently had for a long time. Amazing how good she is at the vet’s office. When she stands, perks her head up and looks at you, she is breathtaking. Once all that fur grows back in, she will look even more amazing.

Betty obviously needed immediate care and if there is someone who would want to SPONSOR her, that would be such a great ‘birthday gift’ for her and for RAGOM! Betty continues to do incredibly well and we just adore her. Again, the personality is one of the BEST ever.

Below, I am showing you some “first photos” of the poor shape she was in when she arrived here in our care. When you see the ‘after photos,’ I think you will be amazed at just how well she is doing and healing up! We have her on grain-free food as we do our dogs. She is fed 2X a day and takes all her meds just fine in her food.

THE BEFORE PICS : (She obviously had to have places shaved from the infection/puss/matter.)

This one is her throat.

This is the top of her head.

This is her hip/thigh area.

Again cleaned/shaved up.

I think perhaps these need to be seen, as this is truly what rescue is about. THE DOG. They come with so many different health and behavioral issues. What is AMAZING is how we can try to help these Golden Retrievers in need, get the help (whatever it is) they deserve and need if we can. This is what makes people like me tick and so love RAGOM, to be able to do these things with the support of others. We can see some, not all, of these dogs blossom in foster care and some like Betty, in a short amount of time. It is also just amazing to many of us, how these Goldens adapt and move forward with their lives. One day/step at a time. Just nothing like a Golden Retriever. ♥

AFTER: Check this out NOW!!!!!!! Pretty amazing! Betty, you are a dream!

Let me add that I have just the best Veterinarian Team/Staff here!!!

What a day to celebrate.  Miss Betty ["Grable"] went home today and she has the most wonderful mom and dad.  She is not "boop" anymore and "grable" fits her perfectly.  A outstanding family drove all morning to get here and it
truly was a wonderful connection/love right away for all of them.  Betty of course showed her well behaved, wonderful self and showed off just how 'far' she has come emotionally and physically.  It is amazing how well she has
healed and is healing.  She will continue to heal with this fantastic family who comes very familiar with dogs, goldens and the many issues which come with them -- emotionally and physically.  To see such happiness is such a
delight and probably one of the best Christmas gifts  you could get. What better than fostering an awesome dog and meeting a awesome family and just being a tiny part of rescue?  This girl already has grooming set up, vet set
up, toys, food, booties and a new coat to boot!  You have to love a well-prepared and insightful family, just makes fostering such a joy and ultimate placement of these wonderful dogs so great.  The "M" family is outstanding as is Betty and we will sure miss her.  On her road to a great new life forever, a Christmas she will love and blessings all the way around.

Miss Betty girl is doing so well.  All of her shaved spots are slowly coming back  in.  She is getting used to going to have her medicated baths twice a week and just fine.  Everyone at vet clinic loves her.  Some pretty photos
of her in the snow, calendar pics?!  She will probably be one of those dogs if she could get used to booties to walk with, she needs to.  Her paws are so 'soft' and I don't think she was out walking hardly at all so they are
quite tender in a way.  So she lasts just a short time in the cold snow but at the same time, enjoys it.  Once she gets to 'normal' for her with her coat and health, she will really enjoy playing in it.  She lopes like a deer.  Sort of funny to watch our corgi Eddie try to herd her!  Cannot even get close! Betty is very mindful and listens wonderfully.  She remains on chephalexin for another 2 weeks to keep the infection under control and also perhaps a medicated (KetoChlor shampoo) bathes once a week for a little while.  That with a good grain free food, we are getting this totally turned around.  It is amazing the transformation from just how horrible, pussy, and bloody she was when we got her.  She is a delightful foster girl and will be a huge, lovely, wonderful companion golden girl.  She would be a fantastic therapy dog I think too! Cheers to Ragom for getting this girl into rescue for sure!

Our Patches are slowly filling in.

Silly girl Betty

Betty continues to do better every day.  She remains a true golden girl.  We are continuing the medicated baths which I think are key in the beginnings with a dog with such severe staph infection, plus I think it feels real good to the dog and rub those icky scabs off.  In addition to those, the medication of some pain meds, prednisone and antibiotics are really healing her well.  Add to that a good diet, grain free (we use Taste of Wild for all of our crew) and only good grain free treats, we have the right recipe to have her heal up with such speed.  Betty is feeling awesome all ready to romp and play.  She loves to fetch, chase and just act like the young 7 year old she is!  Due to being on the prednisone, we do crate her in the mornings while I am at work.  This makes them so incredibly thirsty and of course that leads to multiple potty times.  She knows and does just fine in her crate (we will stop that once she is off meds), and she enjoys a rawhide or a nice kong with yummy peanut butter inside!  It is really amazing how quickly she is healing and we have not seen ‘any’ itching at all.  We are told we can supplement with Benadryl also and for comfort, have give a small dose in a.m. and p.m.  With this crazy cold weather, she just goes out to do her business and comes right back in; here feet get quite cold as the rest of her ‘shaved’ body!  We will resume walks when we are out of the ‘deep freeze!’

She is very gentle and so loves her human(s). [I must say here also, that when Betty did come into our care, her prior owners did tell hotline that they did try as best as they could with the veterinarian and financial resources they had and just could not get her better.  They tried what they thought was good things for Betty which just didn’t work over the past several months or more. They made a hard but right choice for Betty and themselves, and got her into Ragom]. Betty is a beautiful girl all ready for her furever home. She is just a delight to have and an amazing golden to watch heal right before your eyes.  12/6/13:  update from vet is that her coat/skin looks amazing in this short of time and he is very pleased/impressed with how she is healing so quickly.  We are on the right track!  Yeah for Betty.
