Bobby (or Babe, as we call him — his original name was Baby) was surrendered to a Twin Cities shelter by his owner who was unable to care for him any longer. He is said to be good with kids, cats and other dogs. He arrived at the shelter with a sweet personality, but dirty and full of mats. A wonderful RAGOM volunteer paid to have Babe professionally groomed, and over the past week we have done several hours of brushing to remove his undercoat. As you can see from the photos, he has a thick, luxurious coat of fur.

We think Babe must have been treated well by his family, as he has no fears or aggressions. Babe has been with us for almost a week now. We have three resident golden retrievers, and when the four met there was not a lot of reaction. Usually our squirrely three-year old, Cutter, tries to dominate and play with new dogs, but, Babe is so obviously a very strong, stocky and intelligent male, that apparently Cutter decided not to mess with him. Babe is a confident dog that doesn’t need approval from other dogs. He shows no aggression, and now that he is settling in, he has started playing with Cutter.

During his veterinarian visit, Babe weighed in at 80 pounds, had all of his vaccinations updated, and received a clean bill of health. He is overweight (maybe 10 pounds?), but it is difficult to tell with his stocky build and thick fur. Babe is a medium size dog – he appears shorter in the photos because of his build. He does not pull on the leash, does not counter surf, does not chew on items he shouldn’t. He doesn’t do anything wrong – which is one of the big advantages of adopting a senior dog. He may be 9 years old, but his health and strength are more like a 3 to 5 year old. Babe loves to be brushed, hugged and kissed, loves walks, loves music, and generally wants to be in the same room or yard as his people.

After two or three days of transition, he has melded into the pack, and generally follows whatever everyone else is doing. He is not a velcro dog, is fairly independent, secure, and calm, and likes routine. Babe needs lots of walks and exercise; he becomes uncomfortable if he can’t get out regularly.

Contact your placement advisor, if you are interested in Bobby 12-247 (Babe) and/or come to meet him at Duluth PETCO for the RAGOM Meet and Greet on Saturday, July 21st from 12noon to 2pm . He is a handsome dog who needs a family committed to giving him fairly constant companionship and vigorous daily exercise.

Hello Babester Fans!

Did you hear the news? Yep--we finally found that perfect family for Babe---OURS! Babe is officially a new member of the "S" Family and we couldn't be more thrilled to make it official. We've had this sweet boy for almost 18 months. Almost every day, we say... "Someone is missing out on such a wonderful dog."

Last weekend, I couldn't help but repeat those same words. At the Chuck & Don's RAGOM Meet & Greet, Babe received a blanket from a wonderful girl that donated a bunch of handmade fleece blankets to many of our foster dogs and Babe has been sleeping on it every chance he gets....such a cherished gift! Babe is the most thankful boy and just wants to be loved and cared for. He's taught us so much about the simple pleasures in life and he lives that way daily.

As I packed up the car from the event, a fellow volunteer cared for Babe and Bear 10-247 as he has for the past year at events--their special friend Rutager. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words---but in this case---it was the picture that framed how truly happy these boy are and that it was time for them to have their "forever" home.

As you know, Babe suffers from separation anxiety (though almost non-existent in our home since he's so comfortable with the routine and the pack) and he also has arthritis in his front leg that requires meds and pain management. While there has been interest in Babe along the way, there was always an important piece missing (another dog, a playful dog - but not a youngster/puppy, a consistent schedule, the financial means to manage his pain, etc.). Because Bear 10-247 and Babe were so good together, we even thought adopting them both out together would be the answer, but again we waited, hoped, and prayed....but that particular family didn't seem to be out there either. Recently Babe's body has started to give him more trouble....our walks have shortened and his playtime----though still very active with his pals---leaves him hurting and resting more. Babe will turn 11 years old next month and so we began to think about the one birthday gift that would mean the most to him...and the answer was not too hard to figure out. :) We know the perfect home for Babe!

Welcome Home, Sweet Boy! We are sooooo happy to make you and Bear members of our family!

We want to thank Babe's sponsors --- Mary and Carl S, his previous fosters John & Joan and Cheryl, and all his wonderful fans that donated in his name and those that followed his story. You all brought this boy so much love and we can't thank you enough. It's been quite a journey for Babe...but he's found his way home thanks to all of YOU!

Babe officially becomes a RAGOM Ambassador and will continue to be out at events sharing his RAGOM "success" story. :) And---we'll be sure to see you all at Goldzilla!

Signing off for now....
The Babester & Family :)

Hello Babe Fans!

The Bunny Stalker is Back! Babe single handedly took out a new family of bunnies while the other "hunters" were oblivious to his Grand Prize. When Foster Dad noticed Babe---covered in burrs with his mouth tightly closed--he knew the old boy had a prize. FD asked Babe to "drop it" and Babe... In one gulp... Dropped it... Right into his belly.

I guess the garden will be safe again this spring.

Babe hanging with his Foster Family...."Da Boyz"...still waiting for his special forever family.

Babe is looking for a family with:

  • another pup or two (Babe loves to play---he and our 7-year-old resident enjoy wrestle matches every day)
  • a fenced yard is preferred
  • consistent schedule ... Babe settles in well, but does need a nice transition into his new home and pack.
  • loving family that enjoys cuddling, walks, car rides and time hanging out together.
  • means to care for Babe's use of Rimadyl or other pain reliever to manage arthritis in his right front elbow/shoulder.

If you might be that special family.... Please contact your placement advisor.

Oh...the Babester sure loves to sunbathe!

He also loves all the new tennis balls that were donated to the "foster boys" by a good friend.

Babe says, "All Mine."

The Babester enjoying a Sunday Snooze!

Babe will be out at the Brooklyn Park Petco this Saturday 3/22. Stop out....Babe will be waiting for a belly rub or two. :)

Hi Babester Fans!

This little hunter was nice enough to bring me a freshly dead mouse for Valentine's Day. The boy has charm, doesn't he? I know it was a gift of love since he usually swallows them the second I see him grab one. Oh Babester...it's a good thing you are so cute and lovable!

Babe is the oldest dog on the Ranch...but still the best hunter hands down. Here is one of his escapades with foster brother Jonah today.

A hunting we will go...

Babe will be out at the Coon Rapids Petco this Saturday, February 22nd, from 11-1. Stop out and meet this wild and crazy boy. It's so hard to believe he's still here with us. Babe is such a wonderful boy...so sad a family is missing out on having him around to bring them treats and of course...many smiles! Hope to see you on Saturday!

First off---Babester wants to send a HUGE “THANKS” to a very special family and their adopted RAGOM boy Frisbee 04-278 and his brother Jax for buying him a special holiday token!!! Frisbee was also a foster dog at the Ranch and ended up with the most amazing adopted Family. Babe knows that this gift is a gift of hope that he too will find such an incredible family like Frisbee did! Thank you, Peter, Charlie, Jax and Frisbee! We all love you guys!

So Babe Fans…
Did you all know that the Babester has MANY talents… and he uses those talents to “pay it forward” for all RAGOM has done for him and his friends?

For example:

  • Babe is a living, breathing sticker bush detector---he manages to keep all the other pups safe by taking on all the stickers himself.

  • Babe is a guardian. He innately knows that he is here to “protect and serve.” Babe welcomes each new 4-legged guest to the Ranch and becomes the instant “Big Brother”…never too far and always keeping an eye of care on them. Last weekend, we had RAGOM Foster Girl “Ginger 13-397” over so she could attend the Meet & Greet and Babe was a protective host--never far from her side….no matter if we were inside or out.

  • Babe is a great diet partner. How can one resist sharing when that face is staring at you?

  • Babe is a worker! Babe gives back to RAGOM by “working” the RAGOM Meet & Greet events---making sure all dogs and guests are properly greeted---with a lick and a poke, of course---and he also attends our Foster Trainings so he can teach all new fosters the importance of the belly rub.

Babe continues to be a wonderful houseguest and he more that earns his keep on the Ranch! If you would like to meet the boy of many talents---he will be out at the Burnsville Petco Mega Adoption Event on 1/25 from 11-3 with his sidekick Bear 10-247. Please come out and meet this sweet senior boy!

Hello Babester Fans!!!!

We have such GREAT supporters out there---a very special THANK YOU to Ginger (07-404), Jackson (08-442), Benji (07-664), Kim and Bruce AND Santa….for thinking of Babe at Christmas time!

The Babester is so lucky to have caught your eye and your heart!

The Frosty little snow boy---snow mitts and all! Babe is still on the daily hunt for those yummy rabbits.

Now---if you were to ask Babe if he’s been a good boy this year---he’ll give you his big brown eyes----maybe even a kiss or two---and say, “Yes—I’ve been a VERY good boy.”

But---too bad for Babe---technology is so handy these days----the “real” Babe… aka “Toy Thief”…caught in the act!

Babester taking Leo’s ball

Babester taking Pete’s block of wood

As you can see…Babe is the “Babester of Opportunity.” He plays it cool---so unassuming---and the second you drop your guard—the Babester grabs the goods. The most interesting part is that the pack has a reverence for Babe and so they just wait…with the occasional pout…. until he sets the toy back down to be claimed by its rightful owner.

Of course---Santa knows all of this, so it should be interesting to see what Babe gets from Jolly Ol’ St. Nick this year!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year RAGOM Friends!!! Babe is looking forward to what 2014 has in store for him. :)

Hello Babe Fans!

We had a very special guest at our home last weekend and Babe was a wonderful host! (No surprise there.)

RAGOM girl Whitney 13-317 arrived as a weekend guest and let's just say....Babe was as giddy as a school boy! He also proved to be the great protector with our new friend...Babe...never too far from her side!

Babe (lighter coat) and Whitney

Babe (far right) and the Gang, with Whitney still close by, right next to him

Babe so enjoyed our little guest---of course he was full of licks and pokes to get her playing....but she wasn't quite ready for that--Maybe next time, Babe!

All that play and protection wore our Babester out...so he decided to use Resident Jonah as his body pillow. :)

Babe and Jonah

Such a good host and caregiver! Good job, Babe!

Hello Babester Fans!

Babe is such a character. The other night, Foster Dad was wrestling with our resident Leo on the couch...and Leo was giving FD a run for his money, and all of a sudden, Babe jumped up on the couch right on FD and barked at Leo to stop the craziness. We were laughing so hard...our sweet Foster Boy is one good Protector!

Of course, Babe doesn't hold a grudge....he found Leo's leg very nice to cuddle with.

Babe had a busy weekend----lots of "chores" to do!

A dog-gone great boy all around! Come out and see Babe at the Petco Coon Rapids event on 11/16 from 11-1.

Monday, October 21, 2013

Since I'm always saying how playful the Babester is...I thought I should show you how the "Babe" rolls!

Daily game of Tag---this time with foster brother Jonah. :)

Then it's time for a little treat----Babe LOVES apples and often we find him stealing them every chance he gets!

He's quite a character, to say the least! IF you have not met the Babester----you are missing out! Please read through Babe's short novel here and see if you might be just what he is looking for to be his Forever Family.

Friday, October 11, 2013

Hello Friends!!!

I've missed you! Foster Mom is always singing my praises but she's been too pooped out when she gets home and we just want to play and cuddle with her so I'm sending my own update this time.

I saw a bunch of my friends and fans last weekend at the event! (Thanks for the great pictures Uncle Sam F!) I sure love going places with my family ---Bear included! We are kinda a good team--him and I!

Babe (right) and Bear 10-247

Bear and I are goofy, old, lovable, senior dudes and really good friends----we hang together and we also catch a nap together from time to time.

We both need another dog in our forever home and FM thinks it would be kinda cool if we went together since we are such "bookends," but of course we would do just fine with a new pack of our own too..

I'm just about perfect, FM says. The only way you'd know I was 10 is because I have some arthritis in my front leg and I limp a bit after laying down or running hard. But I don't let it hold me back one bit. I'm always the first one up in the morning poking all the pups to get everyone up and Adam. FM says I'm quite the instigator. Not sure what she means but I wear the label proudly---I smile at her every time she says it. FM says the other dogs just humor me but I can really get them going. But since they see me as the Leader of the house---I have to be a good Leader so I listen to FM and always follow her directions.

Foster Mom also said---if you have a mouse problem--I'm your boy! FM says I'm the best "Mouser" ever---I can put any cat to shame. Seems the field mice are doing their best to get into the garage where it's warm---but I guess they don't know "the Babester" is also known as "the Mouse King!" I not only catch 'em but I can point them out no matter where they are hiding----so FM says I'm earning my keep around here until I find a great family of my own!

OK...well gotta run...almost time for last potty call. Hope to see you all soon.

Babester

P.S. A BIG BABESTER SMOOCH to Kraelyn and Lilly for the BLUE PAW at Goldzilla! LOVE YOU GIRLS!!!!

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Hello Babester Fans!!!!

Sorry for the delay in updates-----this is our crazy-busy season at work and at home----but rest assured---the Babester is having a GREAT summer here on the ranch doing all the normal summer activities such as:

Playing ball----a little green never hurt anyone.

Babe's green face-plant

Hanging with family---cuddle time on those cool evenings.

Yard work---helping with tree trimming.

Nice cool baths---after all the bunny-hunting, frog chasing, and poop eating activities.

Babe & Bear after their bubble bath

Yep---summer time on the ranch! It's sure been fun!

Here is just a quick snapshot of the forever family Babe is looking for:

  • MUST HAVE another dog or two.
  • Consistent schedule--we are away on average 6 hours---we've worked up to this over time and have a routine we follow which helps Babe cope with separation.
  • Babe will be part of the family---take him places, spend time outdoors with him, cuddle with him.
  • Understand when Babe is stressed and has an accident from time to time.
  • Fenced yard is a plus but not required.
  • Older kids are better---small kids are too unpredictable for Babe.
  • Babe has arthritis in his front shoulder and elbow and will need to be on a pain reliever---currently on Rimadyl.

If you might be the family for the Babester----please let your Placement Person know.

The Babester will be out at some upcoming events including GOLDZILLA!!!! Hope he will see you there!

How does the song go Babe?

“Over the <logs> and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go…”

Hunting

Exploring

Riding

Babe will be out greeting fans this weekend at Ollu on Saturday and Chuck & Don’s in Blaine on Sunday and then off to Grandmother’s “party” we go. The Babester received a special “Grandma” invite…he’s definitely a family favorite!

Come out and meet this wonderful boy! Hope to see you there!

Happy 10th Birthday Babe!!! Lookin’ Gorgeous!

Mr. Babe spent his Birthday last weekend celebrating doing one of his favorite things---Meetin’ & Greetin’ for RAGOM out at the Pet-a-Palooza event in St. Paul and at the TC Pride Festival in Minneapolis. Talk about celebrating a milestone!!!

Babe also celebrated his 1 year anniversary of being rescued by RAGOM and becoming a RAGOM dog! To think this beautiful boy was surrendered to Animal Control is just so sad….he is the most loving, sweet dog I think we’ve ever met.

Truly a Golden Boy in every way…he’s all about love, companionship and sharing life together with his people.

So many people ask us why he’s been in foster care so long….perhaps they wonder, “What’s wrong with him?”

I assure you…there is nothing wrong with Babe….Babe has been a dream foster boy….mostly because he’s showed us what he needs to feel loved and secure….and we’ve been more than willing to accommodate him so he can find that one perfect place to call “Home.”

Here is what we’ve learned along the way:

  • Babe has some abandonment issues---fear of being left totally alone, though once understood, easily manageable. Babe was adopted out once as an only dog and returned as it was quickly learned that he freaks out when his people are gone and no one is at home. If he could be an only dog---he’d have been adopted 100 times by now, but he cannot.
  • Even with other dogs present, the foster home or adoptive home needs to understand his fear of being left alone and offer him a consistent routine…built over weeks of time….(being away 1 hr…then 2…then 3…etc) which allows Babe to trust that the routine will bring his people back. We work full-time….though our schedules overlap…Babe is not left alone more than 6-7 hours now that we’ve worked up to it. Babe’s feeding times and exercise times are very consistent and this seems to be the key to his success—consistency.
  • Babe always needs a dog or person present—Period. So if he is adopted to a home with one dog as his companion and that dog goes to the vet….Babe will need to go with---he cannot be left alone. A two dog + Babe family pack would be ideal.
  • Babe doesn’t need a fence….thought one would be nice.
  • Babe is not much of a water dog, but give him a field and some bunnies and he’s on the job. He’s caught 3 of the last 4 in our yard. Not bad for an “old timer!”
  • Babe loves to go places with you---anywhere---he’s a wonderful traveler as long as he can hang his head out the window or ride shotgun. He takes his job seriously when asked to navigate.

  • We take Babe everywhere we can…he’s a dream Golden…Mr. Social…loves other dogs …especially the younger dogs…he always wants to play with them! He adores people too!
  • Babe is so FOOD motivated you can get him to stand on his head if he will gain an edible prize! Babe has lost 20 lbs since arriving in RAGOM…80lbs down to a comfortable 60lbs which is where he should stay.
  • Babe takes Rimadyl daily for his right front shoulder/elbow….no doubt all the extra weight over time did some damage but he doesn’t let it slow him down one bit. Vet wants him to stay nice and trim so that he doesn’t add extra weight to his joints.
  • Babe is a cuddler to the Max! The floor…the grass….the couch….the bed….wherever you like…Babe will oblige.

  • Babe loves children---but for Babe’s sake---young children with “puppy” like behavior---he’s not a fan of at all. He will tolerate only so much crazy “in your face” behavior. He’d like a nice quiet, consistent home life…but of course visits with children & puppies are a good thing…just not 24/7.

And that’s Babe’s story in a nutshell….just hanging out with his foster family for as long as it takes …loving life….waiting for his very own “forever family.” And we know they are out there…..

Please contact your Placement Advisor if you think you might just be them!

Babe-a-nator Here!!!!

Look at all the fun I've been having:

Ice cream from Dairy Queen? Really? YUMMY!

I love going places! It makes me very happy!

I've got Foster Dad wrapped around my big paw!

Nothin' like the wind in your hair!

On the way to the lake for a day of fun with Bear!

Foster Mom here: Babe was in heaven at the lake this weekend! So many people to meet and he just loved hanging out with us! Babe is so easy to bring most anywhere and he's a great traveler! Still not sure if he likes swimming---it was so cold out so we'll try again on another trek to the lake.

Babe will be out at the Chuck & Don's event this Saturday in Mahtomedi! We hear there will be yummy hot dogs!!! Stop by and say "HI!" Babe will be waiting for you!

Hello Babe Fans!!!!!

Ahhhh…it’s FINALLY spring!!! And Babe is loving all the extra time outside with his friends chasing the birds, playing with the balls, hanging with his foster family and of course eating you know what---yuck! Everyone has to have at least one bad habit, I guess.

With all this extra play, Babe’s limp has continued to show its ugly face. We are working with the vet to get a good balance of meds to help aid his arthritis. We have been on a few trials without much success so returning to Rimadyl with a different dose in mind---paws crossed it helps. All Babe’s blood work was very good so the vet feels comfortable with continuing on with Rimadyl for a while.

Babe refuses to let his “limp” keep him down----he’s the happiest boy and just wants to enjoy life like everyone else. While R&R would be the best fix for Babe----he would be miserable to be kept on a leash, away from all the fun---he’s definitely making up for many lost years of his life running and playing, so we let Babe enjoy and rest as he feels he needs. The only problem is ….Babe thinks he’s about 5 years old, when in reality he’s closing in on “10 years young” this July. :)

As many of you have experienced, Babe steals the show at our RAGOM Meet & Greets---he’s always sharing a smile and greeting all his 4-legged friends. Babe LOVES other dogs and will instigate play as soon as he meets a new friend. It starts with many licks, then multiple nudges until they finally engage in some playtime.

Of course---he’s such a good boy—he’s always rewarded with his next favorite thing in the world----FOOD!

Babe is a funny guy when it comes to resting-----he likes his own space and will often grumble at the other dogs if they should bump into him or lay too close to him (perhaps because of his arthritis)---that is—unless the dog is his foster brother Bear 10-247. Bear is the ONLY dog that can sit on, lie on, and walk over Babe without so much as a blink from Babe. I think they are somehow kindred spirits---they seem to just understand each other.

Babe is loved by many----even people he just meets. A few weeks back, at one of our meet and greets, I had Babe on a Gentle Leader harness because he pulls like a freight train when he wants to meet someone or sees the treat bins in the store. Unfortunately---the harness puts some pressure on the front of his shoulder and so it's not the best solution for him. A wonderful woman had her daughter stopped by to drop off donations they had collected for RAGOM and heard me talking about the harness and Babe’s pain. Without missing a beat, she went to her car and brought back a harness that works PERFECT for him---puts absolutely NO pressure on either shoulder and is very comfortable for Babe and easy for anyone to control him on. Not only was I thrilled to receive such a great suggestion but this wonderful “angel” gave that harness to Babe as a gift!!!!! We are truly blessed to have such amazing supporters out there!!!!!! Babe and I are so thankful for such an amazing, thoughtful gift! We have enjoyed many walks using this “Holt” harness. Thank you so much!!!!

Here is a photo at our recent Volunteer Meeting with Babe in his new harness----sitting nice for the meeting.

At our vet appointment, it was also discovered that Babe has two teeth that need to be pulled---one in the front that had broken off with the nerve exposed and one in the back that was questionable last year but has progressed and will be removed this week since the broken one is coming out anyways. Babe is a trooper----and so he’ll handle all this in stride----though we’ll still ask that you send quick healing vibes his way.

Babe will be out soon at an upcoming Meet & Greet to show off his new and improved “two less teeth” mouth. Until then---he’ll be having fun with his friends waiting for his forever family to finally find him! :)

HI Babe Fans!!!!

We had to do the “Buff & Shine” this weekend before the big event on Sunday….

First a bath from Foster Dad:

Not a big fan…but tolerating it!

Then a haircut from Foster Mom.

Sorry…No photo available since Babe refused to stand and just wanted foster mom to rub his belly the whole time. Babe LOVES to be brushed and groomed! The second you start brushing him, he lays down and shows you his belly. :)

We all survived the “Buff & Shine” and look what we got!!! Special thanks to a wonderful RAGOM supporter & adopter that took these stunning photos at the Sunday Meet & Greet (Thank you Mike!):

Babe is sooo darn cute and he’s such a character---probably our easiest foster boy to date! I think he could have been adopted out 100 times by now if he didn’t need another dog----but he does---and so we will wait for just the right family to find our boy!

Babe is very playful and loves to be with his family and LOVES to attend Meet & Greets!

So---we will be out again this weekend in Edina…..so please stop by!

Babe will no doubt be the first dog you see when you arrive----Babe 12-247 and foster brother, Bear 10-247, are the official RAGOM Meet & Greet “Greeters!”

Monday, April 1, 2013

Two “characters” on the couch…The Babester and Foster Dad!

Easter Sunday…Babe was renamed “Hoover” for making sure the floor was kept spotless before, during, and after our Easter dinner gathering.

This is no doubt the job Babe was created for! Now if we could just get him to suck up all the fur too…we could rename him “Roomba!” LOL!

Hi Babester FANS!!!!!

The Babester has been having a BLAST at all the RAGOM Meet & Greets lately---he’s quite the “Greeter!” Babe loves every opportunity he gets to go for a ride ---especially if he gets to meet new dogs and people!

Babe supervising FM’s driving.

“OK—I’m ready to Meet & Greet!”

Babe loves everyone and goes out of his way to make sure he does his “Meet & Greets” with the best manners!

Of course---after a good Meet & Greet---there is nothing better than a good rest!

Babe is sooooo ready to find his very own forever family! He’s a total peach and would make a wonderful companion/therapy dog and would be in heaven to visit dog parks or just meet the neighborhood on daily walks. He’s so social and is such a good boy! Once Babe transitions to his new home---he’s good to go---a very normal boy in every way and such a lover! We’ve had Babe outside of our fence –“testing” and while a fence is preferred, we don’t believe it’s a “must” for his forever home as long as his people are out with him.

If you believe you are the family Babe is waiting for----please contact your placement advisor.

Hi, Babe Fans!!!!

Babe wants to THANK all his fans for stopping out to the RAGOM Meet & Greet event this past Saturday---he was one tired pup after working the crowd with his new BFF Elsa 12-395 ---but as you can see—he loved every minute of it!

Hi! I’m Babe, and this is Elsa…What’s your name?

Babe absolutely LOVES meetin’ & greetin’ so we’ll continue to bring him to our RAGOM Meet & Greets----he is quite the little busybody --- always watching to make sure he doesn’t miss out on any new 2-leggers and 4-leggers that walk in the door. Babe barely has time to sit and chat with potential adopters because he’s just too busy watching the door to make sure everyone is given a great personal welcome. Babe would make the BEST Walmart Greeter/Shop Dog/Office Mascot EVER!!! He just LOVES people and dogs!

Babe is not a barker---that is, unless he really wants to play with a dog, but the dog does not care to play with him---which is somewhat beyond his comprehension---“What do you mean you don’t want to play?” Babe loves to pounce and play with new dogs he meets. He practically licks them to death and then pokes them to engage play. Some dogs jump right in the game, and Babe loves it. But, when a dog does not want to play and ignores Babe's attempts to play, Babe barks at the dog---almost like he’s saying, “Hey, I want to play with you, can’t you see? C’mon and play with me.” But his attempts are sometime futile, and so on he goes to find another new pup and it starts over again. Other than that---you don’t hear a peep from him—well, that is, unless it’s time for dinner or you arrive home from being away---then you get a beautiful Babe song! And believe me---nothing makes you smile like a Babe song! We LOVE this lil’ character of a boy---it’s so hard not to love---he’s such a dream foster and such a cool dog!

Babe had a wonderful weekend playing outside with the pack and with special family members that stopped over for a visit with their little guy and two pups. Babe was in HEAVEN to be outside on such a gorgeous weekend …playing, running, and getting lots of attention from everyone!

Oh, I love the snow!

Left to right: Bear 10-247, Babe 12-247, resident Pete/Bear making the rounds with new friends!

C’mon—one more lap!

OK, time to rest.

Babe was on a long 20’ lead (not attached to anything) for part of the Sunday visit because he was soooo goo-goo over his new fur girlfriend, Mia, but Mia wanted nothing to do with a game of “Babe Play.” And Babe worked VERY hard ---giving her every convincing “bark” he could think of ---but Mia wasn’t buying, so we’d have to distract him with a walk in the opposite direction, or a treat—which Babe will practically stand on his head for anything food-related. Babe is also very good in responding to “No, Babe,” if he’s in his right mind, that is, and not goo-goo crazy in love. Eventually, Babe gave up on any chance at play with Mia, and Mia went on her way. Can’t win them all, Buddy…

Babe loved having new friends on the ranch this past weekend. On Saturday after the event, Babe had invited Elsa 12-395 over to play and he chased her all over and loved every minute of it. Remember---Elsa is a “puppy” and Babe is 9 yrs “young”. Unfortunately---he was limping again on that right front leg (the one he takes Rimadyl for) after one too many games of chase up the snow banks and around the bend. Babe is definitely a pup at heart and thinks he can keep up with anyone with no problem----I think perhaps he’s making up for many years of lost time playing and running. With his new figure and great quality food---this boy is so happy, healthy, and ready to roll! Age is just a number to him. Babe is so much fun---such a character—and just looking for the “right” family to call his own.

Babe needs:

  • Another medium/large dog or two.
  • A quiet, loving home.
  • A fenced yard where he can run, run, run!
  • If kids---older kids are good---Babe LOVES kids and he’s GREAT around kids---but he is a senior boy and we want him to have a nice quiet, low-key home to live out the rest of his life--where he can just be himself---feeling free to sprawl out in the middle of the room without the worry of little kids running over him.

If that describes you…please contact your placement advisor.

Babe will be out in Apple Valley at Petco this Sunday from 12-2pm.

Ohhhh…and Babe wants to THANK his previous foster family for sending him such a nice Valentine---- How sweet was that? BIG Babester HUG to the “H” Pack---Thank you so much! Love you guys!

Still missing your snuggles, Babe! Happy Valentines Day! Still missing your snuggles, Babe! Happy Valentine's Day! Joan and John

Hello, Babester Fans!!!

This little honey just keeps getting sweeter and sweeter, and cuter and cuter. Babe wants to know if you like his mustache? He's trying to convince us that all the girls love a good 'stache.....

With these 3 in the house...it's hard to take anything too serious. From left to right...RAGOM resident Pete/Bear, and RAGOM Foster boys Babe and Bear...yep...that's right.. two "Bears" & a "Babe"...it doesn't get much better than that now, does it?

Babe is definitely a lover of dogs---he adores his friends and loves making new friends too! Babe would be the perfect dog to bring to dog parks, doggie day cares, and any social event/situation dogs can attend. He's totally a dog's dog.

Babe and resident RAGOM boy Jonah enjoying a snooze together...

Babe with resident RAGOM girlfriend, "Sugar Butt" on a cozy walk together out back....

Babe and his foster brother Bear 10-247----after a long weekend of play----these two keep us smiling!

Babe is about as sweet a boy can be...so sweet indeed...we tend to overlook his one nasty little habit....

Ready? Poopsicles! Yep--he does....he LOVES them....but don't worry---he's more of a closet type poopsicle eater....unfortunately, there are no closets on the ranch, but lucky for FM---Babe knows it's a nasty little habit, so when he hears FM say his name in that special tone---Babe's head pops up like, "What? just licking the snow, FM--nothing to see here." This will be one habit I won't miss come spring

Babe---minus the poopsicles---will be heading down to Rochester this Saturday to the RAGOM Meet & Greet at Petco from 11-2 with his foster brother Bear 10-247! IF you are looking for some fun---stop down and see us. Since I let you in on his little habit---we'll keep Babe out of the "kissin' booth."

Hope to see you there---

Hello, Babester Fans!!!!

Did you know this sweet boy is going to be out at the Burnsville Petco event on Saturday from 11-2 with his new buddy, Bear 10-247? These two senior boys are going to turn some heads…let me tell you! They are as sweet as can be and they totally understand one another if you know what I mean?

Here are some interesting facts about this pair:

  • Babe and Bear both came into RAGOM as the 247th dog in a given year. Bear in 2010—thus his RAGOM number 10-247, and Bobby/Babe…2 years later in year 2012—thus his RAGOM number 12-247.
  • Babe's and Bear’s forever homes both require a fenced yard; a nice, quiet, consistent family and home; lots of love; and they both need another fur-butt of similar size to keep them company when left by their human.
  • Babe and Bear are total LOVER BOY senior pups… Babe 9ish and Bear 9ish.
  • Babe and Bear LOVE people and love to go places to meet new people…and doggies too.
  • Babe and Bear both LOVE doggies AND KITTIES too!
  • Babe and Bear love to cuddle and be brushed and brushed and brushed!
  • Babe and Bear are good friends….hmmmm… I wonder why?

Babester chillin’ with his new bud, Bear

Babester is a total CARD and LOVES to hit the road riding shotgun with FM. He’s a GREAT passenger, but isn’t afraid to show his “concern” at my driving at times.

What’s with the face, Babester?

Babe is such a dollface! I hope you can come out and meet this pup with his new friend, Bear, on Saturday---you will be sure to leave with a BIG ol’ SMILE on your face!

Hope to see you there!

Greetings from the Babester!!!

Hi Friends!! It’s ME—Babe!!!! I just wanted to thank everyone that came out to see all us doggies at the RAGOM Meet and Greet in Highland Park a few weekends ago----we had soooo many dogs and soooo many great people come by! THANK YOU sooo much!!!!

It was such a nice day to be out and about making appearances----I sure love going for car rides and seeing the world!

We arrived and I couldn’t believe how many fans were there! My Foster Mom asked me if I would wear the donation vest---she told me how cute I was ---you know---really buttered me up and I caved. Well---not really---of course I will help raise money for my favorite rescue---RAGOM!!!!

I worked sooooo hard for hours working the crowd and meeting all my RAGOM friends. They said I’m a GReat RAGOM Greeter! But hey---after a few hours---this boy needed a break!

Foster Mom said I did such a great job I could pick out the BEST treat in the house-----so I went shopping!

She did say "BEST" right?

Finally---time to head home. 4 hours of M&G (Meetin’ and Greetin’) calls for a little R&R!

All rested up! Time for a game of Tennis Ball Relay! My favorite!

Sugar Butt and the Babester coming around the corner in a dead heat!!!

This foster stuff is hard work----but it’s gonna be sooo worth it when I find my PERFECT MATCH!

Just to recap what that PERFECT MATCH might have:

  • 2 or more resident dogs—at least one of equal size---I love to wrestle and play.
  • No “young” 2-leggers—while I love those cutie pies---not sure I’d want to live with all that energy.
  • Fenced yard is best so I can do my relay races with my fur-friends.
  • Low key, compassionate home with a nice consistent schedule---6-7 hours away is fine as long as you work me into it slowly.
  • Lots of love, cuddling, and brushing (I love all three a LOT!)

Well---Gotta run---sounds like another game of Tennis Ball Relay is about to start! Catch’cha later tater!

Pete & Babe say, "Is it time to go outside yet?"

Winter fun with the Babe-a-nator!!!

Yay!

What'cha got Jonah?

Tag, you're it!

Then the cooooold weather came in…inside playtime?

What kind of ball is that?

Think I'll just take a nap with my buddy Leo.

Babe is soooo excited about the Meet & Greet on Saturday!!!! Well---all but the “Bubble Bath” part Foster Mom keeps talking about.

Babe is getting a “buff and shine” tonight for our big outing….lots of RAGOM pups coming and so Babe will be in heaven…Meetin’ and Greetin’ all his friends---hope to see you all there! I wonder if Babe might meet his forever family??????

Babe…aka “Mr. Cuddles!”

Babe loves to cuddle and has become quite the “cuddle partner” in our home!

Just an update…Babe is no longer using the Thundershirt…and is up to 7 hours with us at work with no issues. I forgot to mention that we leave the TV on while we are away---usually we leave the radio on for the dogs---but we were using the TV for Babe. Will transition back to the radio next week.

Babe is so funny when we get home---he sings and carries on and can’t wait to go out and play. He just can’t wait for play time---LOVES being outside with the dogs.

Leo & Babe

We are off work for the next 4 days and looking forward to tons of outside time with the pups…watch for some more fun pictures coming soon.

Some special family is missing out on a REALLY GREAT dog---we sure hope they find Babe soon---he’s way too special to not have a family of his very own!

Hi Babe Fans!!! Hope you are enjoying the holiday festivities!!!

Babe has this holiday business all figured out and we're having a blast! Yep, we met with Santa and all his elves to make sure they knew what Babe really wanted for Christmas. I'm sure you can guess, but here's a bit of what I caught from the conversation:

  • a very special family of his very own looking for a nice senior companion to do life with
  • a nice little pack of pups to share his family with---for sure 1-2 pups but 2-3 would be awesome! Younger and/or older---he loves to play.
  • a nice consistent schedule is comforting to him---Babe is having absolutely no issues at all with us coming and going---we work full-time and at this time Babe is alone for 6 hours at a time without issue. He, like most dogs, loves routine and so our schedule is pretty consistent. He totally loves when everyone comes home---we play and eat and cuddle! Pure Heaven to Babe!
  • a family that really includes Babe in family activities---he loves to go places, be outside with family, car rides, etc.
  • a place to run and play and explore---a big backyard, dog park, walking trails, etc.---he loves exploring! Babe does not need a fence---but does need a place to run and play.

Of course--Santa smiled and let Babe know that "all good things come to those good little creatures that believe" and we told Santa--- "We BELIEVE!"

Then Babe visited two RAGOM Meet & Greets last weekend and had so much fun with every two-legger and four-legger he met! Babe absolutely LOVES meeting new dogs! I bet he'd be in heaven going to a dog park everyday!!! He's so gentle and loving and PLAYFUL!!!

I totally think he'd also be a great nursing home visitor as well! He's just so easy going and comfortable around a crowd.

Babe even had his own holiday photo shoot with Devon--the RAGOM photographer. Unfortunately---Babe has a mind of his own when it comes to photos and no matter what Devon was saying, holding, or squeaking...after about two hundred shoots...she got a few beauties!

Funny boy

Mr. Gorgeous

My favorite is the first because Babe's ears are kind of "kiddie-wompus" ---one longer than the other and one set back and higher. Cracks me up---adds to his charm indeed!

Babe has a slight limp that acts up after he's been playing hard. He's on Rimadyl for it. Unfortunately---he's a hard one to keep at rest---he plays very hard with the pack and just enjoys life---and we let him. Here he is on mouse/mole patrol---he could do this for hours with Jonah.

Babe and Jonah in hot pursuit

What?

And then the Games begin....The "Zoomies"

Babe on the far left starts us off...

We have had just a GREAT two weeks with Babe----he fit right in and our pack just loves him. We believe the trick to the transition is #1 "time" and #2 "commitment" to the transition itself---now that Babe feels so comfortable here...he's just a happy-go-lucky, great foster dog.

Babe wants to thank the special friend that gave him a mitten token for Christmas!!!  We know there are lots of Senior lovers out there and we are so thankful! Thank you so much :)

If you are interested in meeting Babe---thinking you might be the home for this very loving character....please let your Placement advisor know. Santa knows Babe's wish...the very special wish of every foster dog...a home of their very own!

Friday, December 14, 2012

Hi Babe Fans!!! It's Friday----a whole week and Babe didn't have one issue with his transition to our home!!! YAY!

Could be the pack?
Could be the consistent routine & exercise?
Could be the scaffold approach to coming and going---which there was a lot of---now up to 5 hours away---shooting for 7-8.
Could be that wonderful Thundershirt?
Could be the anti-anxiety med (to help take the edge off during transition) he started a week prior to arrival?
Or maybe its the combination of "all of the above"----but whatever it is---Babe has transitioned beautifully and we've had nothing but a very happy, silly, playful boy! He's just a gem!!!

And handsome too!

Loves his new Friends--Babe definitely needs good Friends!

Babe loves to wrestle and is the first to instigate play with anyone he thinks is willing. He is VERY playful for his age! Here is a video of Babe with his foster brothers---Babe is the one on the floor in the opening.

Babe especially likes his Foster Brother Pete----and follows him all over the place outside! Babe is older than Pete but Babe acts like Pete is his "Big Brother."

A hunting we will go...

One thing Babe LOVES is cuddling and he's not shy about seek attention.

Babe and Foster Dad

We are looking forward to meeting all his fans this weekend----we will be out at both RAGOM Meet & Greet events so we hope you can stop out to meet Babe in person! WE didn't have time for a bath ...but his cuteness shines through regardless---you'll see what we mean! Hope to see you there!

Sunday, December 9, 2012

OH MY---what a funny boy!!! Bobby arrived at our home just a few days ago and like everyone else that's met him----we are totally smitten with this boy! He’s a perfect tri-mixture of Sesame Street’s Mr. Snuffleupagus, The Muppet’s Fozzy Bear & a very special RAGOM Boy we all remember--Christy and Joe’s boy “Andy.”
While we had planned to wait a week to update on Babe's transition to our home— we just couldn't resist sharing this cutie pie with you now. We've had a fun couple of days...

Mr. Snowman

Babe and Foster Brother Pete playing in the big snow

Babe has some separation anxiety when he transitions to a new home so we are using some favorite RAGOM tools to help with this. Babe seems to really like the Thunder Shirt.

Very comfy!

More on his transition as we experience it. We did a few test runs today and all went well so we will continue coming and going (baby-steps) for the next few weeks with the same routine to see if that helps with his transition. We'll keep you posted.

Settling in...

Another reason we are updating is because Babe received a holiday TOKEN from Mary & Carl and we wanted to say, "THANK YOU!!!!" It's people like you that help lead these dogs "home" and we can't thank you enough for thinking of Babe with your gift! Big wet lick just for you both!

While we think "Babe's" name is a bit odd---we know he was called "Baby" and "Babe" for his whole life and so we think we'll stick with it. I mean---there were plenty of famous "Babe's" out there...a great baseball player comes to mind as does a Big Blue Ox!

Come and Meet Our "Babe" this Saturday at the Richfield VCA Pictures with Santa event from 12-2:30 and Sunday at Chuck & Don's in Blaine from 12-3.  These will be our last 2 Meet & Greet events of 2012 :)  Hope to see you there!

As foster parents for rescue dogs, our role is to be the caring hands that keep them safe, ensure that they receive medical attention, teach them what they need to know to be adoptable, and find the right match for a furever family. Some dogs stay longer than others in our home. Bobby has been with us for five months and has captured my heart. With tears, I made the decision to transfer Bobby to a new foster who will be better able to help him become an even more confident dog and find his forever home. Selfishly, I would have liked to adopt him, but that would have meant my husband and I could not help the multitude of other dogs needing assistance in the future. Bobby is a kind soul with a warm, gentle heart. Whatever family that adopts him will truely be blessed.

Tired from Playing Ball in the Heat

I wonder if Foster Dad bought me anything
tasty from the grocery store.

I'm trying to be good, but am nearby in case you need me to help 'clean up.'

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

After a brief weekend with another foster, Bobby is back in Duluth with his foster family. We have learned that he needs a super slow transition to new environments, such as a new foster or forever family. If the transition occurs too quickly, and he is locked up in the house by himself, he will try to get out through the door or windows -- this is called separation anxiety. After consultation, Bobby's veterinarian advised temporarily using an anti-anxiety medication beginning a month prior to and during a transition to an adoptive family's new environment. He also will need another fairly confident medium to large sized dog as a friend and role model. Bobby is a super mellow dog that does well with children, cats, other dogs and strangers. His only hitch is that if he is going to be placed with a new family, he needs enough time to become used to it, or else he will try to escape.

Here's what we know about Bobby:

Age: 9 years
Gender: Neutered male
Weight: 65 pounds
Good with kids: YES
Good with cats: YES
Good with other dogs: YES
Housetrained: YES
Need Fence: NO
Medical Needs: Rimadyl for minor arthritis in right front elbow
Favorite Pastimes: Taking walks, getting brushed, napping to music, snuggling with Foster Mom while watching tv, chewing on bones or treats
Personality: Super mellow, doesn't get excited about much
Favorite expressions: Lifting his head and giving low howls of happiness amid yawns when waking up in the morning. Tail wags straight like a windshield wiper. Giving gentle single licks of love to Foster Mom.

Possible Types of Adoptive Family Matches: We see Bobby as needing a quieter environment with at least one fairly confident medium to large sized dog and with one adult home most of the time or ability to take Bobby to work.

Bobby is fine with kids. Here is a photo of him (on the left) with a neighborhood boy and his dog. Bobby has started nudging me for pets and wagging his tail a lot more. I think he likes the 'golden life' that RAGOM provides. Come meet him at Duluth Petco during the RAGOM Meet & Greet on Saturday, October 27 from 12noon to 2pm.

Saturday, October 6, 2012

Bobby has had a couple of busy weekends, attending Goldzilla and our local potluck/doggie playday for RAGOM volunteers in Duluth. He behaved himself like a champ at Goldzilla, not really phased by all the other dogs and people. He stood and looked with curiosity at all the activity; he enjoyed getting extra attention and being petted; he had no problem with a couple of people giving him walks twice; and he was not afraid to prance in front of the crowd for the Foster Parade. Bobby was a gracious host during our potluck, enjoying two extra dogs to play with and extra hands to give him treats and pets!

Someone finally brought up the name of the dog in the cartoons that Bobby reminds me of -- Marmeduke! He uses his voice to express himself, like in the morning when we get up he yawns and adds in a little howl. Same thing when it is meal time or time to go for a walk. He lets out this cute little howl pointing his snout up. I love this about Bobby, he makes me smile every time he does it. He also reminds me of Marmeduke because of his fur, which although long and gold, is thin and flyaway. My dad said he needs brylcreem hair gel!

Bobby doesn't need a fence, if you are watching him. He is good with kids, cats and other dogs. Many people have commented that he is a nice size -- not too big or small, but inbetween, weighing about 65 pounds now. He needs daily walks, but not major exercise. He is healthy, neutered and up-to-date with all vaccinations. His rear leg muscles are somewhat small, due to being kenneled without exercise much of his previous life, but he gets around just fine. He is not a big swimmer, but does enjoy the water and woods. He plays with other dogs and enjoys music. He loves, loves, loves to be brushed and if you take out the dog brush, he will immediately lay down on his side and wait!

Bobby has come a long way in three months, learning that when we leave, we will be returning. This means that we no longer think he needs to have someone at home most of the time. He does need routine, so that he knows what to expect. As his Foster Parents, we would commit to working with his adoptive family on a gradual transition for Bobby, from our family home to yours. He would do fine with kids, but we think he would enjoy the peace and quiet of a home with older kids, or no kids or just visiting grandkids.

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

The vet exam went well for Bobby. His hips are good and weight of 69.8 pounds, is a good weight for him according to the vet. He does have tartar on his teeth, with a rear molar in poor but stable condition. It may need to be extracted sometime in the future. The vet found silver embedded in his teeth, which he said indicates he was chewing on a fence. Bobby's rear leg muscles are weak, likely from living in a kennel, but can easily be strengthened through exercise. Overall, the vet said Bobby has a good temperament and is a healthy dog who would make a gentlemanly companion to someone.

When Bobby first arrived at our home one month ago, he was nervous from being separated from his family and living in a shelter and boarding for a week and a half. He would softly howl a very lonely sound if we were not with him. Gradually through the month, he settled in and relaxed. He began playing with our 3-year old dog, Cutter, and they now play like puppies together rolling all over the yard chasing each other. He still does not like it when we leave, which is almost never, but he is much more calm than when he first came.

Bobby is not food motivated; is not toy motivated; he is HUMAN motivated. He just wants to be with you and for you not to leave him. He is not bothersome, does not ask to sit in your lap, he just wants to be in the same room and receive some attention once in a while. That's all he asks, and in return he will always be there for you, whether you want to just sit or take a walk or whatever. Bobby needs someone who is home almost all of the time.

Bobby will be at the Duluth Petco on Saturday, August 11th from 12noon to 2pm for a RAGOM Meet & Greet. We expect to have at least three additional RAGOM dogs available for adoption, as well, so come meet the puppers if you can!

Friday, July 13, 2012

Bobby (or Babe, as we call him) has won our hearts over the past two weeks, but we are going to trust that some other deserving person or family will come along and eagerly scoop him up into their arms and bring him home. About a week ago we were watching tv on bed, when he hopped up on the bed on his own accord and nuzzled in next to me. After a few minutes he put his head into the crook of my arm and kept it there while we watched tv. It is safe to say that Foster Mom melted at that point!

Treats and rawhide sticks and bones seem to be a new thing to Bobby. He doesn't quite know what to do. After watching the other dogs enjoy these delites, he is catching on. As a matter of fact, he is pretty good at sniffing out the bones that one of our resident dogs always buries in the dirt, and chewing them himself.

While he is a very good walker on the sidewalk with the leash, it seems to be a new experience for him to take a walk in the woods and dip in creeks and ponds. He is on the chubby side, out of shape and struggles a bit to keep up with the rest of the pack, but he gives it his all and does pretty well. He is already slimming down and will be in great shape in no time. Thank goodness for the resident dogs -- they are the best teachers!

Babe gets along with everyone and everything, just an all around nice dog. He needs to be with his people or he gets lonely. When he first came, we didn't hear any barking, just a very soft and resonant howl. I think he was calling for his former family and feeling confused.

In case you are wondering, Babe came in to RAGOM full of mats, and there are large sections of fur on his tail, hind quarters and behind his ears which were cut out during grooming. I don't think you should adopt a dog based on handsomeness, but believe me, Babe has got it all. He is stocky with a full chest, and beautiful golden blonde fur all over his body, and he loves to snuggle and be brushed.

If you'd like to meet Babe, we'll be at Duluth PETCO on Saturday, July 21st from 12noon to 2pm. We hope to have other RAGOM dogs available for adoption there, too. Hope to see you there!
