Please welcome Braden 16-044 to RAGOM. Braden is a 5-year-old male Lab mix. Next to nothing is known of Braden's past. He is one of 11 dogs seized from a neglect/hoarding case. Braden is severely underweight. He weighs about 32 lbs and should weigh 60-65 lbs. The weight will need to be put on slowly. He is being fed a very high-protein, high-fat, high-calorie food 3 times a day to get the best benefit from the food. Exercise will be limited until he is close to his ideal weight.

Now, for some good news. Braden passed his RAGOM wellness exam with flying colors. No parasites and no positives for diseases. So, his only health problem is his weight. A very good day at the vet. I was expecting the worst. Braden is up-to-date on all vaccines. Braden is not neutered and can't be until he is up to 45 lbs.

Behavior-wise, Braden is still a bit shy, but seems to know his name and loves people and being petted. He is OK with my resident dog and another foster dog. He ignores my 2 cats. He has taken a few days to explore the house. He is still a little uncomfortable, but is making progress most days. He spends most of his time in his crate with the door open. He sleeps quietly through the night in his crate with the door shut. Braden is fed separately from the other dogs; because of his near starvation, he eats very fast and as much as he can. Braden is not housebroken yet. He has had a few accidents in the house. Hopefully, that will change soon.

Braden will be a bit of work and money to make his recovery. Here is where you can help. Please sponsor or donate to Braden. He will be in RAGOM's care for a while and all donations are appreciated. These hoarder dogs are being fed Purina Pro Plan Sport 30% protein/20% fat food if you would like to donate food or gift cards for food. Thank you to all that already support RAGOM. Without you, saving these 11 dogs and all the others wouldn't be possible.

There is much more to learn about Braden 16-044. Check in on him again and watch his transformation.

Updates

Saturday, May 14, 2016

Hi, folks. Braden here again. It's been a while since my last update because I have a family interested in adopting me. FD talked to them on the phone, then they had to fill out the application and get approved, then have a home visit and have that approved. Thankfully, that all worked out, and they came and met me last Saturday. I poured on the charm, but the neighbors were shooting gun, and that made me a little nervous. Kent and Joan still fell in love with me!! FD said he could see little hearts floating in the air. Since RAGOM requires 2 meetings, they couldn't just adopt me on the spot, but plans were made for the second meeting and probable adoption. The reason for 2 meetings is for everyone to think about it and be positive it is a good match.

Well, Kent and Joan came back and adopted me. I was a little scared to get in their car with them, so foster brother Joe showed me it was OK. So My new, better life has begun.

I'd like to thank my saviors at the humane society that saved me from certain death, the RAGOM volunteers that helped me and the other 10 dogs get into RAGOM, all my sponsors and donors, Foster Dad, Joe 15-226, and all the others that have helped my recovery and helped me to my new life. Thank You so much!

Hi, folks. Braden here. FD (foster dad) thought I should start doing my own updates.

Since my last update, I didn't go to the meet-and-greet as I thought I was. There was some mix-ups and other things going on that prevented it. Hopefully, things are sorted out now and we will try to get to another meet-and-greet in the near future.

I did not get to the vet's office to get weighed, either. Hopefully this week, that will happen. FD says that I am filling in nicely and building muscle. We started walking a bit further now to help build strength and endurance. FD says I walk wonderfully on a leash. I am able to run faster now in the fenced part of the yard. The other day, foster brother Joe and I chased a squirrel. It ran up the tree. I waited for a while for it to come down. FD was happy to see this. He says I'm becoming more of a "normal" dog every day.

I still like to hang out some in the plastic crate. I sometimes just make a quick pass-through. I'll hang out in the living room some of the time also. I'm comfortable in most of the house. I haven't really explored the basement yet. I do wait at the top of the steps if FD goes down there.

I'm ashamed to report that I did have a pee accident in the house during the night. Now FD has me stay in the bedroom so I can tell him if I have to go outside.

Since I am getting more active and getting bigger, FD has started feeding me more food. I'm still fed 3 times a day and get very excited at feeding time. I still eat very, very fast. FD keeps telling me to slow down, but I am still remembering being nearly starved to death. He also says it would be good if I would chew. Speaking of food, I get a treat if I go in the crate when FD goes outside or goes somewhere. I get a treat at 10 pm also.

Thanks for all your support and for checking in on me. I am available for adoption at this time. That could change if someone inquires about me and is given the green light to move forward in the RAGOM adoption process. Please read about how RAGOM's adoption process works here. There have been some recent changes.

Lots of positives to report this week.

Declan 16-046 went back to his FM.

Braden regressed on his housebreaking the following day when I let him have free roam while I walked the other dogs. I put him in the kennel now when I leave the house. No other accidents since then. He does have free roam at night and when I'm in the house.

Braden was neutered on 4/15/16. I was expecting him to regress slightly. Instead, he progressed ! He is now comfortable in every room in the house. It makes me very happy to see this and other small things start to happen. Just this morning, on our way to the door for the first trip out of the day, Braden got very excited and did a play bow. With most dogs, I would think nothing of it. But with Braden, this is a good sign that he is well on his way to being a "normal" dog after his recent neglect in his previous life. Braden still has some leftover behaviors, but nothing to be real concerned about. I think that Braden has progressed enough to make him available for adoption.

This past weekend, my other foster dog Surf 16-020 met his adopters and was adopted. Braden loved all the people around. The kids were teenagers, but I think Braden would be fine with younger kids, as long as they didn't have food. Braden craves any and all food, since he was near starved to death. I also keep him separated from the other dogs at feeding time.

Braden continues to be very affectionate. He loves pets and rubs. Now, since he is comfortable in the living room, he will snuggle with me if I lay on the floor. He hasn't tried to be a lap dog yet, but I think it could happen in the future.

As far as requirements for Braden's forever home, I think the biggest is the understanding of his past and willingness to work with him to become a "normal" dog. There is always a possibility that not all things will become "normal" with him. I have to say I think he has a good chance, though.

I think the "fence desired" requirement is a good thing with any dog. A potential adopter not having a fence is not a deal-breaker. Right now, it is hard to get Braden to want to stay outside long enough to do his business. He loves being in the house.

Having another dog is optional, but I think Braden would get to "normal" faster if he has another dog to look to for confidence. Braden is a little scared of new things and looks to my resident dog to make sure it's OK. Having another fairly confident dog around really helps speed things up. He does look to me for confidence also.

In other things: Braden continues to put on weight and muscle. I'm pretty sure he has passed the 45-lb mark (up from 32 lbs). I hope to get him weighed again soon. He is really filling in. Less of his ribs are sticking out and his coat is looking better all the time.

Thanks for your support and for checking in on Braden 16-044.

Lots to cover this time, so here we go.

Thank you to Rona D for the spring decoration. Also, thank you for helping all of the hoarder dogs into RAGOM.

Braden had his trip to the vet for his vaccine booster. He has put on almost 9 lbs at that time. That brought him up to 41.8 lbs a week ago. I took him back today just for weighing. He is up to 43.4 now. Dr Sarah has cleared him for neuter after 4/15, when he should be near 45 lbs. Braden's coat has improved also.

Braden also seems to be housebroken. No accidents in the house for over a week. Braden still spends time in his crate, or Man Cave, as I call it, but also has grown fond of my bed. Braden now sleeps in bed with me at night with the bedroom doors open. Braden is slowly getting more comfortable going through my dining room to go outside. I used to have to lead him by the collar or leash. Slowly but surely, things are improving.

This week, Declan 16-046 came to stay for the week while his FM (foster mom) traveled for work. Braden gets along with him, but won't let him on my bed unless I am there. Braden does let my other foster Surf 16-020 get on the bed and will sleep pressed up against him.

I need to make a revision on Braden's availability for adoption at this point. Braden is "unavailable." He is unavailable because he is not neutered yet, and I am unsure at this point what Braden will require in his forever home. As soon as both things have been met and figured out, he will become available to meet potential adopters. Given Braden's background of neglect, he may have some special requirements. I do plan to bring Braden to meet-and-greet events. He loves to meet new people, so hopefully, he will tolerate the noise and new dogs well. I'm optimistic that he will.

I have been walking Braden almost every day. We walk about a mile. The vet wanted it limited to that to keep him from burning off any of the weight he has gained.

That's about all for now. Thanks for all your support and for checking in on the story of Braden's new and better life.

First off, Thank You to Trish Moudry for sponsoring and Lisa B, Jamie G, and sister Cait 16-045 for the spring icon decorations. It's overwhelming to see this much support for this dog in need. Braden and I are very grateful for all your support.

Braden has made progress with his house training. He has regressed slightly with his being social. He stays in his crate most of the time, but will come out if coaxed. I plan to start letting him sleep in my bedroom at night. My hope is that it will bring more trust of me and the other dogs.

I haven't taken Braden to the vet to reweigh him to see how he is doing. I plan to go in the coming week. We are walking 1/2 mile or more every day with one of the other dogs. He likes to walk, but is very cautious. This seems to be improving every day.

I feel I should explain Braden's adoption status. Braden is listed as unavailable because of his weight and that he can't be neutered until he reaches 40-45 lbs.He is open to meet potential adopters. The adoption would just have to wait until he is up to weight and neutered. This could take several months. I think he would be worth the wait.

Do you think that Braden 16-044 could be the dog for you? Fill out a inquiry or contact your placement advisor. Thanks again for all the support and checking in on Braden.
