This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Luther was brought to RAGOM via the AHS where he lived for just under a month. All the staff I spoke with ALL love this guy and were so happy to see him going to RAGOM to find his forever home! He had comment cards that noted: 'gentle giant' 'gentle soul' 'all around great dog' 'loves lovies' 'great walker' 'alert' 'must be housebroke because he keeps his run clean!' 'he's my favorite' (I have found all of these things to be true!)

When I got Luther home he looked so happy to see a yard and a house as he perked up and his tail was a waggin! We then went into the house and he seemed SO happy and went right into the crate I had set up and laid down on the bed as if to say 'this will do!"

The first thing you will notice when you meet Luther is his tail is non-stop wagging! He IS a happy sweet boy!

At Luther's first vet appt the Vet did an age assessment based on looking at his eyes and teeth and thought Luther was between 7 and 8 years old. Luther is currently being treated for ear infections in both ears and has scarring from an old hematoma in his right ear (he has no pain or irritation when you touch it). Luther was neutered while at the AHS on 5/30. And, being that we don't know much about this guys adventure on the road (and he's not talking) he is currently underweight and malnourished...so he is now on a really high quality SR food! YUM! And he loves treats! Luther is currently getting great vet care and is on the path of great health.

Here are some notes about this sweet boy!

  • He eats very gently out of my hand, such a gentleman
  • I have not seen him resource guard anything
  • Loves to follow me around ever where I go
  • Walks great on a leash
  • Has been given free roam of my main level and has had no issues (he is not destructive)
  • Loves to be brushed and petted
  • He did great for his first bath - seemed to enjoy the 'soapy scrubbins' - THANK YOU DENISE A. for assisting!
  • Looks to be an 'honorary golden' and is all Lab
  • Does great in the car, no crate
  • Does great with other dogs
  • He has done great around the kids he has met (9 and 10 yr old)
  • Did I mention he wags his tail A LOT? happy, happy boy!

Because we don't know much about Luther's past we do not know his previous name (and not from my lack of trying - I keep calling out random names to see if I get a response for any of them). He does not necessarily know LUTHER to be his name, so his forever home could transition him to a chosen name pretty easily. (he does seem to like the sound of GUS so you may hear me slip up and call him GUS - I think he likes it cuz it has a happy sound to it)

Once you meet this boy you will have a hard time not falling in love with him! He's a sweet heart!

Updates

To all of you who have been following his story, at long last, an update about Luther!

First to say thank you to his RAGOM foster family who took such wonderful care of him during the eight months of his healing journey; also to his sponsors. He is doing well because of your care, support and faith in him. Thank you!

I adopted Luther on March 1, 2015, and I am happy to say that he is continuing to do really well. One of the first things I did in bringing him to his forever home was to consider a new name for him, knowing that Luther was the name assigned to him at the shelter where he had been brought in as a stray. As I pondered a few names, the one that seemed to fit him the best is Casey, which I discovered is a Celtic word for "Brave," which certainly he is, so that is his new name.

One of Casey's favorite things in the world is to take walks, and we take a long walk each day, usually along the Mississippi River. We often stop to talk with someone we meet along the way. On one of our walks Casey met an eighteen month old toddler who was out walking with her Mom. She was wearing pink rain boots and had on a headband with a floret. She pointed to Casey and said "doggie."  When I told her Mom that Casey is friendly the little girl put both arms around Casey's head and hugged him. He wagged his tail and nuzzled his face into hers. It was a precious moment to say the least and as they were walking away the little girl jumped up and down saying "doggie, doggie, doggie."

On another day, Casey and I met a Mom and her three year old son. He got off his bike with training wheels, his helmet bobbing on his head as he nodded yes, that he'd like to pet Casey. He patted Casey carefully and said "I think he likes my bike."

Casey likes to begin his walks by carrying a toy in his mouth, eventually dropping it when some scent or other grabs his complete attention, then I carry it the rest of the way. At the beginning of a particular walk on a grayish, windy morning, Casey was proudly displaying a new, soft, blue squeeze toy as he sniffed the trees and ground. Three women walked towards us; one of them began laughing and said "my dog does the same thing."  As the trio walked by she said, "he's a beautiful dog."

Casey is an ambassador it seems and I am struck often by his gentleness and interest in connecting with others. His sweet disposition has a positive impact on people young and old I have discovered, though of course the adults he meets aren't as apt to express themselves in the same way as the child jumping in her rain boots! The delight of the adults we meet is usually seen in their smiles as he wags his tail when they pet him or in their kind words about him.  I do believe that Casey is a magnet for the heart, and it is an absolute pleasure to be walking with him on this next part of his journey.

Casey and I have been on a learning curve, as he is not familiar with many basic commands. I have been teaching him the word "stay" when I'm cooking so he will stay just outside of the kitchen and away from the stove, which he has learned as of this writing, no longer needing a command or a treat. I have also been teaching him to wait at intersections and to walk on one side of me on busy sidewalks. He is responding well to these guidelines as he adjusts to the mostly urban landscape where we walk. The most recent command he has learned is to sit. I am struck not only by his gentleness but also by his smarts! In time we will take some obedience lessons together, so that I too will learn how best to communicate what is needed in a given moment.

I am looking forward to taking him to a dog park in another month after we've had more time to bond. He does look eager to play with other dogs we meet on our walks, and I have heard that there are two dog parks near our home, one that has an area for swimming so that is something we look forward to doing this summer. At the end of April we will take our first trip up north to a cabin. More fun awaits! In the meantime we'll practice getting in and out of the car and taking rides.

What else to share? Casey and the two resident cats are also doing well. There has only been one incident when one of the cats, William, hissed and swatted at Casey, and Casey growled   his displeasure in response. Most often, William rubs his head against Casey's head and purrs. The second cat, Anubis, has not hissed even once, and has given Casey a lot of space. I have watched how lately he has been going up to sniff Casey, and yesterday for the first time they touched noses. Casey has amazed me in that he does not make any attempts to eat the cats' food, which he could easily do, but he seems to know it is theirs without any guidance from me.  When he first arrived I was concerned about this, but saw quickly, it is more likely that the cats will eat out of his dish!  When that happens he will move away from his dish with his tail wagging. On a recent evening, they were all lounging comfortably in the living room and it was like we had all been living together with Casey here for a long time.

On the topic of food, it is not that Casey does not have an appetite. On the contrary, he is ready for his breakfast first thing in the morning, and eagerly awaits dinner late in the afternoon at which time he eats up all of his kibble. He lets me know he's ready to eat by picking up one of his toys and wagging and wagging his tail and heading into the kitchen.

For those of you familiar with Casey's medical history, when I took him for his first vet visit he got a good bill of health. His heart worm screen results were negative, his weight is just what it should be, his digestive system is in balance, and the vet said she could readily understand why I would have adopted him. She had no concerns for his health at this time!

He was a little nervous getting on the scale to be weighed; he needed a treat to coax him into the exam room as the floor is linoleum and he tends to slide on non-carpeted floors. But he managed well getting blood drawn for the screen and in getting his nails trimmed. Though all went well, he needed no coaxing to walk on the floors as we exited! One of the clinic staff was so impressed with Casey that she asked for the name of RAGOM, and I gave her the contact info.

One more tidbit comes to mind as I bring this update to a close; Casey's playfulness has been more apparent as he's been adjusting. A friend and I were with him in the back yard and he had a favorite toy in his mouth. When he let it go she picked it up and tossed it; he got it and brought it back three times. He has begun to run with excitement at the start of our walks, and I've enjoyed watching him run a few times out in the back yard when I've called to him. As his foster family wrote, Casey does not bark much. Indeed, I have only heard him bark once in the last month, even as the two neighbor dogs bark their presence when he is outside. His response? You guessed it: wag his tail!

Casey is an absolute gem and I'm so happy to have him here.

Luther has had a busy couple weeks! Last Saturday he attended the Shakopee meet and greet and was a great embassador for RAGOM and loved all the extra attention and yummy treats!

And this week he met his forever family that adores him and he went home with them today! I am going to miss him and his 'old man' snore! God speed Luther! Love you to bits!!

Thank you all for following Luther's story over the past nearly 9 months! It has been quite a roller coaster ride - but with all the prayers and positive thoughts it now has a fairy tale ending as he will live happily ever after!

BRRRRRR! Luther still likes his walks -even if it is in the negative degree range! This morning we had to shorten it up as it is too cold! Remember to keep your pups safe in the extreme cold!

Feb 15th marks the last day of 6 weeks post op - YEAH! No more restrictions! Luther continues to do great. His body will continue to heal from the major surgery he had and he is making improvements each and every day (with his colon resectioned his poo'in is slowly getting back to 'normal').

Yesterday was a big day for Luther as he was officially cat tested! And he passed with flying colors! Previously, Luther had seen cats (was close enough to give them a good smell) at the vet office and had no issue. There was a lot going on in that setting so we put him a different setting just to make sure and he did just fine. I think Luther would do great in a home with a cat(s) - I imagine them becoming great companions!

Luther also wanted to say 'Happy Vantines's Day' to everyone! He even made you all a heart! Isn't he the sweetest guy ever! (Yes, it may look uncomfortable but he does this all the time as it is how he cleans the bottom of his paws!) Luther is an absolute delight!

Hi! I am now 5 weeks post op and I am going great! I am back to my old self (which is pretty charming by the way) and enjoying walks and rolling my head in the snow EVERY time I go outside! I get to now go on my 'normal' walks but I don't get to run for 1 more week (FM says we HAVE to follow the rules!).

Thank you Frederick for the heart on my page! It is nice to know I have friends out there! And every donation helps for pups like me to get a ticket to a bright new future and to continue to know the Golden Life!

Lots of Love! Luther

Thank you for continuing to follow Luther's journey - today you are in for a WONDERFUL surprise! Notice the removal of HOSPICE?????

Luther has had a busy few weeks! On Monday, January 5th, he had surgery to remove his tumor and we are so grateful for the skillful surgeon Dr. Rasmusson and the team who all did an awesome job! On Friday we got great news that his tumor, which was leiomyosarcoma (a tumor of the smooth muscle), was low grade and removed with clear margins. Luther is expected to live a normal doggie life! THANK YOU RAGOM and the surgery team at Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital!!!

Luther was a great patient and wore his ProCollar like a champ! He was so happy to not wear the 'cone of shame' - not that the donut didn't have shame involved!

Although Luther did not get the message of needing to restrict his activity level for 6 weeks his FM did. Our walks were only around the house for the first two weeks and we have recently gotten the approval to go for our 'normal' walks with NO running. We are following orders as I want this boy to have a smooth recovery. It has been so nice to see him returning to his normal self post surgery!

And, for the first time ever, we get to let you know that if you are interested in adopting Luther - please let your placement advisor know! If you are looking for a super easy, mellow boy who likes to take walks - he's your guy! FM is excited about the opportunity of a forever home for Luther and will miss him dearly as we have become a pretty bonded pair as we have had quite the journey together! He is a very special boy!

Here are some fun facts you will want to know about Luther:

- loves walks and is super easy with no pulling

- doesn't bark

- not even at the door bell!

- sleeps like a champ

- tethers easy

- very tether savvy

- does need his ears cleaned out weekly (super easy to do and he is very tolerant)

- keeping his nails trimmed shorts help him with his challenges on non-carpeted floors

- our visits to pet stores is also helping!

- he doesn't get on furniture or beds...he is not sure what that is all about and is content to lay on his doggie bed or on the floor near you

- he does not resource guard at all

- he loves to chew on antlers and thinks toys are for carrying on walks

- he gets a little nervous when traveling in a car and will stand most of the time (although in recent trips he has started to laid down more)

- he is not cat tested at this time

- he does like other dogs

- he does not jump on people or up on counters

-he loves attention and to be petted

-he did great with getting lots of attention from my 6 year old niece who loves him too

We are planning to start attending meet and greets so stay tuned - Luther would love to meet you!

Happy New Year everyone! And thank you for continuing to follow my story as a RAGOM boy!

Despite my hospice status my story is continuing and I am doing well! I love my daily run/walks and we even added a weekly trip to the local PetSmart so I can practice walking on non-carpeted floors - I am very distracted by the giant yummy smelling bags of food and the people who say I am a good looking boy and want to pet me!

Thanks to Denise A. who stayed with me for a couple days over the holiday! She said I am an excellent sleeper and that I am looking really good!

This past Sunday Luther visited the Edina meet & greet and got to meet some of his fans (he is excited to know he has followers!).

Luther has a 'thing' about walking on non-carpeted floors but he forgot all about the tile floor at Chuck n Don's as we walked up and down the aisle of dog food and his sniffer was on over-drive with all the yummy smells!

Luther also got new reflective gear for our evening walks (harness used solely for it's reflective purposes) and we are now feeling much safer during our evening walks as drivers can now see Luther from a distance! :)

Luther has been enjoying this cool fall weather! He loves our runs (yes, we used to walk, now we run - he sets the pace and I have to slow him down sometimes!). He loves to grab a toy or a shoes (I like the toy as it is easier for me to carry when he decides he is done with it halfway through our run!). Doesn't he look good!

When Luther came to me 4+ months ago he had not been brushed in a LONG time and up until recently if you petted him you got handfuls of hair. Well now he has a beautiful coat that is so soft - it is as if he shed ALL of his previous coat and is a new dog! No more dander and coarse hair!

I don't know what it is about a sleeping dog, but I love when he sleeps - he is out cold and snores up a storm - it is so nice to see that he trusts his enviroment and feels safe enough to get some good sound sleep - I am blessed!

Luther has some exciting news to share!

After his above mentioned 2nd ultra sound he had blood work done that showed everything was NORMAL including his organ functions! YIPPY!!! So, this lucky guy is scheduled to have surgery to have his spleen and tumor removed on Monday, 9/22 (as long as the pre-surgery goes well (paws dbl crossed!!!!)). We are thinking ONLY POSITIVE thoughts right now and pray that after the surgery he will be cleared to have hospice removed from his name and then can start looking for his forever home once he recovers!!!! We are so grateful for RAGOM and all that they do for our pawed friends!

Luther is also LOVING this cooler weather...this morning our walk was a RUN as he was so excited (I think this boys is feeling just fine!).

This picture is an image of what I see every time I leave the house...love this boy!

Luther has been enjoying the summer with lots of walks daily, playing with our neighbors new puppy - a black lab named Guinness and recently being able to help FM with a home visit - he is happy he is helping other pups find their forever homes and hopes to get to do more.

Luther continues to be very healthy and no real signs of this nasty cancer he is thought to have. He is very excited for his daily walks and usually wants to run. He even gallops at the beginning of our walks as to say 'lets get going!'. He recently had a 2nd ultra sound (our neighbor is a vet and is doing a study and needed a willing patient! how lucky are we!!). The ultra sound showed that his tumor has only grown slightly in the past 3 months and his spleen, liver and heart all looked great/healthy.

Luther and I want to say THANK YOU to Kathy H for the donations and decorating Luthers page! We are blessed!

Luther has had a great week full of lots and lots of walks - we even run sometimes! Luther is also quite the hunter and sees all the squirrels and rabbits as we walk through the neighborhood. I often find him watching the action outside from the sliding glass door that over looks the back yard - it's his 'job'!

Luther watching the squirrels and rabbits                                           Nap Time!

Luther's first week with me was filled with lots and lots of peaceful rest - I think his time on the road and in the AHS was very tiring for the poor guy. He was also diagnosed with 2 tick disease that probably have taken a toll on him as well. On Thursday 6/12 he started an antibiotic to treat the tick diseases. I am happy to report that on Friday this guy seemed rested and ready for whatever life has to offer...he is getting up in the morning and ready for his walk! And breakfast! This past weekend he followed me every where and even got to hang out in the yard while I cleaned up the storm damage (lots of fallen branches).

Wishing that Rabbit would come closer!

Luther had an ultrasound on Wednesday evening, 6/18, as a mass was found in his lower abdomen. It is with a very heavy heart that I share it is assumed that he has hemangiosarcoma based on how it is presenting (no biopsy was done).  Luther currently is full of life, happy, alert and comfortable. I will continue to love this boy and give him the best days I can while he is with me (he is a little spoiled right now, but he is a very grateful boy so I am happy to spoil him!).

Luther is not letting bad news get him down!
