Cedar (Shannon 07-545)

Profile

Shannon is one of Patti’s four-week-old puppies from an Arkansas puppy mill. If most of the pups are sleeping while a single pup is exploring the far reaches of the area, that’ll be Shannon. The first pup to try to climb into mom’s food dish? Shannon. The first one to conquer the barrier and gain freedom from the puppy holding area? Shannon. There’s a special gleam in this pup’s eye.

Hi RAGOM friends,

I have struggled to write this over the last couple of months but need to let you know that we have said goodbye to Cedar (aka Shannon 07-545). She was diagnosed with a melanoma in her nose in April 2017. She kicked cancer's butt for nearly a year, finally crossing the rainbow bridge on March 29th with the help of a wonderful vet from MN Pets.

Family and friends all knew they would be greeted at the door by a grinning golden who would "Woooo" to welcome them in. Her gentle, sleepy good morning smiles each day made getting out of bed much easier.

Cedar was very protective of her sister Lady (09-321), a former puppy mill mama who joined the family in early 2010. Lady and Cedar quickly became fast friends.

Knowing Lady was nervous to meet other dogs, Cedar always trotted out front to greet the new dog first and give Lady the option to engage, or not, as she was comfortable. Despite being sick Cedar continued this practice to the very end.

We all miss her very much and are gradually finding our new normal. Thank you for all you do and for giving us the chance to know and love our beautiful girl.

Christiana and Aric picked up Shannon, brought her home and had, in their words, “… a loud first night …”. They’ve changed her name to Cedar and have gotten her accustomed to her kennel. She’s been exposed to adult dogs and to young children and has done very well with every new experience. That’s because she has a “… sassy attitude …” according to her new owners. And attitude sometimes becomes challenge, they are learning. But they say that she’s smart and that they love her. What more could she ask?

The big dog of Patti’s litter, Shannon weighed in at 10.5 pounds when the veterinarian gave her the final exam, shots and chip before she goes off to her forever home. She was having a bit of a “bad hair” day after her bath (you always have to have a bath before going to the doctor, right?) but she didn’t let that slow her down. She charmed the receptionist and the vet tech and caused a little work slow-down in the office before her exam. She was deemed strong, healthy and ready to go on to her new life next weekend. She gave the office staff a little farewell bark on her way out … showing off her newly acquired skill. She must have learned it from her sister, Keri, the she-doesn’t-know-that-she’s-little one, who was the first pup of the litter to bark.

Shannon goes where she wants, and lately we find her sitting just inside the barrier that keeps the pups in their area. We can just see the wheels in her little brain turning over … she’s plotting her escape. We think that by the end of the week she’ll be the first puppy to successfully escape from the room and gain a fleeting measure of freedom. In her forever home she will be joining Christiana, a board member at Helping Paws, and Aric. This is going to be a good match for all of them.

Shannon has taken on the leadership role amongst the puppies. She likes to be in on everything, including mom’s food dish. She is one of the bigger of the puppies and has lots of energy to play nonstop. She also is more than willing to stop all this for a little cuddle. Watch for more - they are getting cuter every day! Shannon had a nasty little cough this morning so we’ll be treating her for the same upper respiratory infection that seems to be going through some of the dogs that came from the Arkansas puppy mill.
