March 25, 2017
It is with profound sadness that we share that Chewbacca "Chewy" crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Friday March 24, 2017. Chewy was an exceptional boy, strong, gorgeous, and had a love for life and adventure. When he came into RAGOM, he was in need of ACL repair surgery. He also had some reactivity and fear issues that would arise on occasion and needed to be managed. He got the much needed surgery and that required a long rehab period. He started that rehab in his foster home and finished it a couple of weeks ago in his adoptive home. He was adopted in January. Unfortunately, Chewy's fears got the better of him two weeks ago and a significant bite occurred. Chewy's new family decided to surrender him back to RAGOM. After reviewing all of the incident information, the RAGOM Behavior Services Team determined that the severity of the bite was such that Chewy could not be rehomed again. Our only responsible recourse was to help Chewy lovingly cross the Bridge surrounded by his foster mom, his favorite transporter, and his favorite medical staff that saw him through his surgery and recovery. He enjoyed a double cheeseburger minus the pickles and ketchup (he said no to those). We sat with him and thanked him for coming into the RAGOM family. We held his paw, kissed his head and told him what a good boy he was. He crawled in my lap for a quick cuddle too. As he slipped over the Bridge, I am sure he took my tears with him. The strong, gorgeous boy endured a lot in his short life of less than five years. We have no information on what occurred in his first three years of life that caused him to have the fear and reactivity that he had. Despite the patience and love he received in his surrendering home, foster care, and adoptive home, Chewy was not able to let go of that fear while he walked with us. Now, over the Rainbow Bridge, he has no more fear and no more pain. I would like to believe Chewy running joyously with many of the RAGOM dogs that have gone on before him, having a blast and chasing after tennis balls on four strong, tireless legs to his hearts delight, yet keeping one eye on the Bridge waiting for all the people that loved him. Chewy's original surrendering family, his adoptive family, and many volunteers in RAGOM that had the good fortune to meet this boy and help him along the way during his time with us will remember a boy that loved car rides, fetching his tennis ball, going for walks and watching animals on TV. Many others that followed his story here on his page quickly fell in love with this boy and cheered him on from afar. We are very grateful for all of the people that loved Chewy, supported his Foster Mom when needed, cheered him on and did everything possible to give him the life that he deserved. Special thanks to Dr. R for fixing his leg and to Misti Jo, CVT, for all of the wonderful care he received during his recovery, and for her unending compassion to help Chewy cross the Bridge with dignity, peace, and so much love. We also thank Dr. C and the staff of Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital for their kindness during this process. Run Free sweet boy. You were loved and will be remembered. Foster Mom and your foster sisters.
