This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

I'm very pleased to introduce you to Cinder - he's a charming little guy, full of energy and enthusiasm and very affectionate!  Cinder is a 56 pound golden mix and truthfully, we're stumped as to what kind of dogs are in his background.  He's a bit of a mystery but clearly golden retriever is one of the strong parts of his lineage.  He has the most interesting muzzle - there are lots of dark brown hairs on his muzzle giving him a bit of a 5 o'clock  shadow look.

Cinder has been to the vet and is up-to-date on his vaccinations.  He's been neutered and will be micro-chipped shortly.  Before Cinder came into RAGOM, he had been treated for heartworm and we'll be doing one more test in July to make sure he's good to go.  He is a very active boy - in fact, his surrendering owners got him when he actively had heartworm and he was much quieter at that point.  After treatment, his natural activity level was restored and he was a bit too much of a playmate for the resident dogs in that house.  He's somewhere around 1.5 years right now and excited about opportunities to run in the yard, play with the other dogs, and he loves to go for a ride.  He's an occasional barker when something just doesn't seem right and we're just fine with that.  He has shown great house manners and has not had a single accident.  He enjoys a snuggle on the couch, loves to sleep on the bed and since he's not a huge dog, there's enough bed for everyone to be happy!  Cinder has been around children but not since he's been with us.  Because he's been known to jump up when he's excited, we are thinking he'd do best with children 10 and older.

Although Cinder seems to love our fenced backyard, at this point we're not sure if he requires a fence. It could be that he would be fine with lots of walks on leash but he *really* enjoys a good romp in the yard.  If he can't get one of our resident dogs to play with him, he's been known to just run for the sake of running.  At the same time, we're not sure he's ready to be a running partner.  He seems to have strained a muscle when he first came to us so we're trying (not always successfully) to keep him somewhat restrained.  Once that is healed up we'll know more.

Cinder has not been crated since he's come to us but we know that he was crated occasionally in his previous home.  He's quickly picked  up the household routine and looks to the resident dogs when he's unsure about what to do.  He sleeps soundly all night but has adapted to our early morning routines and now thinks 5:30  is the time to get up, even on Saturdays.  We're going to teach him the joys of sleeping in next!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to wish you all a happy holiday season! I am enjoying my life in my foster home in Iowa, but I would also love it if you'd like to come see me and get to know me a little bit better. Maybe you'd even want to take me to your house forever?! I continue to do very well here, and I love my foster sister, Sadie. Foster Mom and Dad think I'd do well with another female dog in my house, but I would also love to be an only dog and soak up lots of love and attention. I'm the kind of dog who loves to be active (walking, running, playing, etc.) but I calm down almost immediately when we are inside at my foster home.  Every once in a while I will bark at something outside, but I'm easily redirected with some pets, or a treat or toy (especially those squeaky ones!).

I am a very, very good boy at home during the day. My FD is a nursing home administrator, and my foster sister goes to work with him a few days per week, and I do super well when she's gone and I'm all by myself.  When she's home, we are confined to the bedroom because she will get into the Christmas presents or decorations, but I don't find that stuff interesting, so when she's at work with FD, I get free roam of the house and I am always a very good boy.

Do you work full time, but still want a dog to come home to who will be so incredibly happy to see you and want nothing more than to cuddle with you on the couch all night long? If that sounds like you, then I'm your man!

Please think about meeting me if you are looking for a lovable, cuddly, and oh-so-friendly 50-pound lap dog (I am said to be the "World's Best Cuddler").  Until then, I hope you all stay warm and have a safe and happy holiday season!

Hi, folks! Cinder here to update you on my adventures over the past few weeks. First of all, I had an awesome Thanksgiving. I got to head over to Iowa City to see my old foster family, and I was so happy to see them--they really helped me in my first few months of foster care, so I enjoyed spending some time with them :-).  I know in my last update I told you that I was going to meet a family who had a few kids who I loved, so we really wanted it to work out.  However, I just didn't seem to mesh with their young male dog, so, good news for anyone who has been following my progress: I'm available again if you'd like to meet me! I'd like to give you a "refresher" on my requirements, in case you've been thinking about coming to meet me!

Here are a few things about me:

  • I am extremely sweet, and the world's best cuddler.
  • I am cat friendly, but might take a few days to fully adjust to a feline housemate.
  • I prefer female dogs to male dogs and would enjoy a playmate.
  • I'd also love to be the center of your world as the only dog in the home.
  • I don't require a fence, but it would be fun to run around and play in!
  • I love children, and FM and FD say I'd be a great family dog.
  • I can have free roam of the house for up to 9 hours at a time.
  • I'm a very gentle and well-mannered boy, but would definitely benefit from some obedience training.
  • I'm an all around happy boy, and I simply want a family to call my own.

Do these things sound like something you're looking for in a dog? I know many of you are looking for a purebred Golden Retriever, but I can promise you that, while I'm a mixed breed dog, I am incredibly sweet, gentle, and loving, and isn't that all anyone is really looking for in a companion? If you'd like to meet me or know more about me, please let your placement advisor know. My foster mom and dad would love to fill you in!

Cinder was adopted a couple of months ago to a wonderful home, but he made his way back into RAGOM a couple of weeks ago. Cinder came back to RAGOM after he had a small altercation with an adult in his home. He underwent assessment and an evaluation, and after he passed with flying colors, he came to our home to be fostered until he can find his forever home.

Cinder has been with us for one week now, and I can't begin to explain how wonderfully he's fit in. He is the biggest cuddler you'll ever find, and he loves absolutely everyone he meets. We're not absolutely certain as to the full details of his situation in his previous home, but we have seen nothing but a beautiful and calm, yet playful, young boy. He is looking for a home with people who will play with him, love him, and make him feel safe and secure. He also loves other dogs and he loves children, so he'd definitely reside happily with them. He's minimally interested in cats, but he would never hurt them, and once he's settled and realizes they don't want to play, he hasn't (in the past) shown much interest in them at all.

If Cinder sounds like a dog that might interest you, please contact your placement adviser. We would love to tell you more about this sweet, sweet boy.

Cinder had a great time at the RAGOM Volunteers picnic. He was very social and met some new friends, both the two-legged and four-legged kind. He got to be the demo dog for a presentation on how to shape dog behavior and he was perfect at it! I was really motivated and have signed Cinder up for obedience classes next month, in case he hasn't found his forever family yet. Based on what I saw at the picnic, I think this will be great for both of us.

The other thing we've discovered is that when Cinder gets stressed, he absolutely loves his Thundershirt. He seems to like it and doesn't mind at all when we put it on him. If he's a bit too stressed or anxious, we put that on him (we call it his jammies) and he calms down instantly.

Cinder is going on a bit of a doggie vacation to visit some friends and see what it's like to spend time in a household where there aren't quite so many dogs. We think he might just thrive in a house where he doesn't have to compete for attention and where he can settle in and be the affectionate guy that he really is. He's about the most affectionate dog we've ever met. His favorite thing is sitting on the couch, easing his way onto your lap if you'll let him, and then looking up at you with a sweet face and licking your chin. He could do that for hours!

Cinder is looking for an experienced dog family without little children so no one has to worry when he gets rambunctious and wants to play. He's a little guy, doesn't take up a lot of space, and walks nicely on a leash after the first few minutes. He waits patiently for his meals, sitting perfectly still and waiting until his dish is in front of him. He doesn't eat in a big hurry, but he also doesn't dawdle!

Cinder is one happy little guy - it doesn't take much to please him. A walk in the backyard, a stroll through the prairie, chasing a ball (not necessarily bringing it back), and snuggling on the couch with you (actually on you if you'll let him). He is very polite when it comes to eating - he sits patiently waiting for his food, takes his treats very gently (amazingly so!), and waits patiently in line for the special morsels that FD sometimes doles out at bedtime. Cinder has not had a single accident and outside of "customizing" our remote control when he first came to our house, he's shown great house manners. He can be very independent and it's not unusual to find him in a room alone, looking out the window or curled up taking a nap.

Cinder is in very good health and handles going to the vet very well. In fact, the last time at the vet, he tried to sit in her lap too! He enjoys going for a ride and gets along with all of our dogs, although he and our largest resident male dog have had a few words. They seem to have developed a healthy respect for each other and have worked things out.

Cinder is doing well on his new medications, so he is now less anxious and a bit more focused. We're going to take him to see the vet this week since he still shows way too much interest in lights and reflections and fast-moving objects. Cinder is going to the RAGOM Volunteer Picnic this next weekend and we know he'll have a great time.

Cinder is really enjoying the summer.  He seems comfortable and really loves to take himself for a run in our backyard when the temperatures drop in the evening.  It's not unusual to see him roaring around, doing laps with what we think is a huge smile on his face.  At the same time, it's not unusual to find him taking a nap in a quiet spot in the house, all by himself, curled up on the bed or maybe in the living room, positioned just perfectly so he can see out the front window and have a good barkfest if a deer or bunny appears on the horizon.

This last week we started to notice that Cinder was very intrigued by shadows and the reflections of light in a room, in fact, he was too interested in them.  We talked with Cinder's vet and she has placed him on some medication that will help him relax a bit and not be so focused on those kinds of things. It's too soon to know the impact of the medication but it's fairly cheap -- only $4 per month, and he takes it readily with a small piece of cheese in the morning.

Cinder is so sweet but he's a young energetic boy who needs to be busy.  Unfortunately for me, last week I left my knitting on the floor upstairs in my office (what was I thinking) and that proved to be too much of a temptation for him.  He reminds me of the importance of keeping a house safe for a young dog, and I've learned my lesson!

You'll also notice that I've changed the requirements for Cinder.  We think another dog is optional -- he enjoys other dogs but we believe he's independent enough to be an only dog.  He's such a confident little guy with a strong personality that we think any other canine companions should probably be females.  He definitely wants to be the top dog and that doesn't seem to go well with our two resident males.  Although the males have all worked out a relationship, we've noticed that he gets along very well with our female dogs and they've had no issues at all.

Please contact your Placement Advisor if you have room for this lovely young boy in your home.  He's a great snuggler and great company!

This boy is just a cutie pie!  He is a medium-sized boy who really enjoys life and one of his favorite activities (after playing) is to cuddle on the couch and rest his head on your lap.  If he gets banished to the floor, he is a bit miserable but finally settles for curling up and resting his head on your feet.  It's the same at night -- Cinder absolutely craves to be with his people and wants to sleep up on the bed without much movement at all.

When Cinder first joined our household, he was a leisurely eater who would stroll around between taking mouthfuls of food.  Now he has learned to sit and wait for his food dish to be placed on the floor and eats steadily -- no more walking around and leaving food trailing behind him!  Cinder takes treats very gently which surprises me, truthfully.  He's a very playful boy and energetic as well.  I think his big disappointment in our house is that none of our resident dogs want to play the rough and tumble games that he finds so fun.  Cinder tries so hard to get their attention, first gently and then with barks and playful grumbles, all with limited success.  Sometimes Cinder just settles for going outside and playing in the fenced yard by himself.  And sometimes he'll just take his toy and go to another room and enjoy the experience all by himself. He's rather resourceful but you can tell he would *really* like to play.

If you have a playful dog and a couch with room for a mid-sized golden, Cinder is your boy.  He has really settled in this last week and is showing us much more of his fun-loving yet serious personality.  I know those sound like opposites but Cinder is a young boy with lots of energy yet enjoys a good night of television watching or just sitting with his people (on the couch, did I mention that) while they read.  He's a very versatile young boy!
