Dakota 09-508

Profile

Please welcome baby boy Dakota to RAGOM land! He and his littermates were surrendered to RAGOM after an accidental mating. His Mom was a purebred Golden Retriever. We don't know who his Dad was but we don't hold that against him since he is so stinkin' cute!

Dakota is 11 weeks old (born on 9/27). He has a happy, playful spirit! He is healthy except for a case of worms which is typical of most puppies. He is already doing much better with the loose stools the worms caused after 3 days on medicine. Last night for the first time he slept through the night without having to go outside to do his business! Good boy, Dakota! So, I know he is feeling better.

You can't tell from the pictures but Dakota has a brindle-like coloring. Mostly black but with streaks of brown and then a white chest and paws. So pretty and fluffy. The problem with black dogs is that they don't photograph well unless you have them on a light colored background. So the pictures don't do him justice.

Little Dakota is quickly learning about doing his business outside and has already mastered the 'sit' command. He does fine in his crate at night or when I am at work. He can play by himself or with others. And of course he comes for lots of snuggles :)

Dakota is a typical puppy in terms of his forever home needs. Kids, cats and other dogs (or not) are all OK. No fence required. Obedience training required in order for him to become a well mannered adult in your home.

In case you have forgotten, puppies are a TON of work! For probably the next 4 weeks and intermittently thereafter for a few months to a couple of years, they will have accidents in the house, chew your best shoes, dig up your roses, chase the squirrels and eat everything in sight. But they are also hysterically funny and so rewarding to watch turn into the perfect adult dog.

Baloo was taken from us way too soon. In September 2013 he was diagnosed with lymphoma and in October 2013 he crossed the rainbow bridge. We had 4 short years with this gentle giant and he filled our hearts with love and joy. He will be greatly missed and always in our hearts.

Dakota had a fabulous Christmas! We had a friend's dog staying over and they wrestled for hours! He really loves the snow and sticks his head in snow banks to show it. SO funny! Accidents are fewer and fewer and his crate is always clean overnight and for up to 4 -5 hours while I am away during the day. He's getting so big already that I had to adjust his collar.

Part of RAGOM's mission is to end the senseless euthanasia of unwanted dogs. For us, as well as other rescues, that means spaying and neutering all dogs before they leave our care. Dakota was neutered last Monday and came home that afternoon like nothing had happened. True to his puppy spirit, he never missed a step!

Dakota is experiencing many new sounds every day in order to show him that loud noises are not scary. He couldn't care less about the vacuum cleaner or the snow blower. In fact, he tries to chase the vacuum cleaner as it moves around the room. It's so cute. I'm not letting him practice that though :)

You don't want to miss out on this part of his life! It is the time when he learns that only good things come from people and there is nothing to be afraid of. A time when he learns that not everything is a chew toy but there are plenty of fun things in the world. If you are interested in helping him learn these things, contact your placement advisor.

There is something under the snow!

Dakota had such a fun weekend playing with the neighbor boys and also visiting RAGOM dog Toby (already in his forever home)! He slept in between play sessions. He really LOVES the snow. Did not want to come back in. He was so adorable throwing his face into snow piles and plowing ahead! What a great puppy! He is going to make some family very happy. Could that be yours?

Dakota is progressing quickly in his potty training now that the diarrhea is gone. He has not had a bath in two days and is a member of the Clean Crate Club! Good boy, Dakota!!
