Everyone, please give a warm RAGOM welcome to Dewey! He is a very cute and little 1-year-old Golden mix. Dewey was found as a stray in Sioux Falls last summer, and when his time was up at the shelter, the staff contacted RAGOM for help. Dewey is up-to-date on vaccines, is neutered, and weighs roughly 50 lbs. He needs to gain about 10 lbs, but besides that, he is in perfect health. Really, the only way you can tell he is a mix is because of his adorable little ears and unique eye color; the rest of him is all Golden!

Dewey has a very calm and sweet dispostion. We go on a 30- to 45-minute walk in the morning and he loves to sniff EVERYTHING! He does pull slightly at times, but not too bad. He stays in his crate while I am at work and is not distructive towards his bedding, and only barks a litte after I first leave. When he is out of his kennel, he will come to me for some cuddles and kisses, and then he is content laying on a dog bed close by. I would consider Dewey a medium- to low-energy dog. He also knows "sit" and "lay down," but does not seem to know his name yet!

Dewey's life so far has been a rough one with being a stray and then staying in a kennel eviroment for a long period of time while at the shelter and waiting for a foster home to open up. This has resulted in Dewey developing some insecurties. As of right now, Dewey needs to go to a home where he can be an only dog due to resource guarding food, treats, and high-value toys from other dogs. He will need an adoptive family that is patient and willing to help him overcome his insecurities and gain confidence. Dewey has not shown any signs of resource guarding towards people, so it seems his issue is only towards other dogs.

This little guy is truly a sweetheart that got dealt a bad hand, but things are looking up for Dewey now! He has so much potential and really deserves the best. That's it for now; we will update again as we continue to learn more about Dewey every day!

Secret Agent Dewey reporting. I have been undercover for quite a while. Now I am back and ready to let everybody know I am ready for the public to appreciate me. I have been participating in something called the Golden Shepherd Program. I have been thoroughly investigated, vetted, and seen by psychological experts. I have undergone strenuous exercises and testing. The result is clear. I have been working on how to be an adorable, obedient, and loving dog. The proof is I am now living in a home with my foster family. I have a canine buddy who is a German Shepherd. Sort of humorous since I was in the Golden Shepherd Program. I will stay in my foster home now until the perfect adoptive family comes to claim me as their own. Here are a few photos of me! Stay tuned....Dewey is back.

Here is my first outing with my Golden Shepherd. This is when the training all started!

She put this thing on me to help with my pulling during walks and it has worked wonders!

She came to visit me almost every day to work with me! Here I am just getting comfortable!

On another occasion, it was so nice outside she took me to her house for a while to be able to take in the fresh air!

I even got to play with a very large stick!

Here I am in my foster home with my Golden Shepherd. She decided to take me in and help me find my forever home!

This is one of my buddies! We like to play like crazy!

More updates to come!

Dewey has now been with us for about a week, and he is settling in nicely. Here are a few of the things we'd like to note about Mr. Dewey...

Positives:

  • Walks well on a leash
  • Fully potty trained
  • Crate trained (good candidate for free reign)
  • Petite
  • Non-destructive
  • Quick learner
  • Loves people and belly rubs
  • Knows "sit" and "lay down"
  • Calm/gentle disposition
  • Does not jump up
  • Minimal grooming needs

Downfalls:

  • Resource guards food/treats from other dogs.
  • Does not get along well with kitties.

We have also noticed that Dewey seems to get along well with our neighbor's female Goldendoodle. We believe with time, Dewey could live happily with another female dog in the household. If you feel Dewey would be a good match for your family, please contact your placement advisor!
