Diego 12-366

Profile

It is our pleasure to introduce you to Diego (12-366). He is 18 months old (DOB 5-1-11). He is a beautiful boy with a medium color coat and dark eyes and nose. He has a very small scar on his nose. His mother was a PB Golden Retriever. His SO believes the father was too. He weighs 61#. Diego was surrendered because he lived outside and kept wandering off. Diego was neutered in September. We went to the vet last week and he is up to date on all of his shots and was micro-chipped. He was negative for heartworm, but did test positive for roundworms. He is being treated and will be rechecked 11/19/12.

Diego was a bit apprehensive at first when he met our resident Goldens, Sunny (10-285) and Hank (10-240), but within 20 minutes they were off playing. He has found his place in the pack now. He is really good with children. He hasn’t been exposed to cats.

Diego has a typical Golden personality. He loves people, seeks a lot of attention, and wants to please. Diego came to us having never been inside a house, worn a collar, or had obedience training. He is a trooper!

  • He has had no accidents in the house or crate for 7 days. He will not yet indicate he needs to go outside, but hopefully that will come soon.
  • Getting him to come into the house was hard at first, but now he responds 80% to the word “come” and 60% to the word “sit”. He has a look that shows he is so proud of himself and we just love him up!
  • He pulls on walks, but really enjoys them. He’s an excited puppy. He has only been wearing a collar for a week so we are taking it one step at a time. We are using a Martingale collar as we think he will slip out of a traditional fixed length collar. Now that he is used to a collar we will introduce a Gentle Leader.
  • He is in his crate when we are gone during the day (max. 6 hours so far) and at night. He tolerates it, but it is necessary to keep him safe at this point. He is a puppy and the house offers so much to explore. He is partial to fabrics, including shoes. He doesn’t release yet, but will trade for a better treat. He loves toys, including tennis balls and Kongs. He has no resource guarding issues.
  • His favorite spot is the window seat where he watches for rabbits and squirrels. He does bark, but will stop when we approach.
  • He let us clip his nails and check his ears.

Most of all Diego is a sweet boy. He loves to snuggle at night and gives lots of kisses. He is very affectionate. He would do best in a home that has a fenced in yard based on his history of wandering. He will also need to be enrolled in a basic obedience course. You must also be comfortable with lots of kisses! He can’t help himself.

I've been meaning to write for a long time, but just couldn't wait a moment longer to tell you about our RAGOM dog, Diego.

We adopted Diego in January 2013 from foster parents Jill and Jonathan K. The K's are wonderful people.  We've stayed in touch to keep them up on how well Diego has adjusted to our family.  In fact, last summer we went on an extended vacation and the K's warmly welcomed Diego back to their home for his own doggie vacation with the resident dogs at the K home.

Diego's stay with our family started off a bit rocky.  He was always kind and gentle, but he was wetting on the floor and that was a big problem because I was staying home with three little ones and feeling overwhelmed.  I am so glad we stayed patient; we purchased a crate and tried crate training.  It worked very quickly and I'm happy to report that Diego has not had an accident in well over a year.  The crate also helped Diego in the evenings; he seemed to get restless in the evenings and would ring his bells (another skill the K's taught Diego) repeatedly to go outside.  Thankfully, the crate calmed him and he'd sleep through the night.  Diego now has free roam of the house day and night with no anxiety.  He's a dog that likes to sleep around; he takes turns sleeping with two of our kids and sometimes at my bedside.

Before Diego came to RAGOM, he lived on a farm in Iowa.  He had little supervision and roamed around the local area. As he wasn't accustomed to any boundaries, he'd take off at full speed when we opened the door and not look back when we called for him.  Now he knows his yard and boundaries so well and always sticks close to home.   In fact, while exploring the woods in our hometown of Luck, Wisconsin Diego spotted a deer and took off after it.  I only had to call his name once and he happily returned to my side.

He also hadn't much experience walking with a leash, but now even our 22 month old can hold his leash while riding in her stroller and Diego gently stays by her side.

Most important to us, Diego is wonderful with our children and is their protector.  When our daughter, now 22 months was learning to go up stairs, Diego would patiently follow behind her, making sure she'd get to the top okay.  When our 7 year old son plays soccer in the basement, Diego uses himself as a shield so the baby won't get hit with a wayward kick.  Although we discouraged it, when our daughter was smaller, she'd stand on Diego to peek out the window.  He seemed so happy to be able to help her out.

We love Diego so much.  He is wonderful with all of our friends and family, our aged cat Jimmy, our neighbors and all other animals.  We are so thankful for our friends, the K family and for RAGOM who gave us a perfect addition to our family.

Sincerely,

The M Family

Diego has been adopted by the M family. He is settling into his new house and is one lucky guy! He has a dog bed on every floor, kongs galore, and three children and a Mom and Dad who will give him lots of love and training. Diego is a gem and I know he will give just as much back in return.

Diego going to his forever home

Diego had a very special family visit him this weekend and it was love at first sight for Diego and the family. They played ball and tug of war, tussled together, and gave each other lots of hugs. Diego gave lots of gentle kisses to all! We are so happy for Diego that he has met his forever family and will have his own kids to grow up with. Diego will start the golden life he deserves with his family later this week! (Dad is finishing the fenced in yard - Thank you!)

Happy New Year! I'm sorry we haven't updated Diego's site for so long. The holidays just seem to take over.

The holidays were a great time to learn more about Diego:

  1. Diego loves people. He goes over to new people and lays his head on their laps for love.
  2. Diego would love to eat off the table, but knows he isn't supposed to. He eats 2 meals a day and gets a few treats. He loves apples!
  3. Diego finished his course of prednisone and it seems to have chased his cough away. I think that is finally gone.
  4. He can sleep anywhere if people are close by. We needed to give up our room to Grandparents and he was able to sleep in his kennel, on a dog bed by ours, and in the morning loves to cuddle with us.
  5. I put a little tree in his window seat. He seemed a little annoyed, but understood not to disturb the tree or presents. He did destroy a couple pairs of our socks, but whose fault was that??? We left them on the floor.
  6. We were also reminded that Diego has not yet learned control where running is concerned. Diego has a deep desire to run. He loves people. It's not to run away from us...it's to run. He needs a fenced yard, training, and if someone in your house runs, he'd be a great partner.

As most goldens, he loves to please. He thinks he's a lap dog & likes to sit in your lap if you are watching tv or reading. He loves to play...chase tennis balls, kongs, rawhides, and roll in the snow.

If you think you might be interested in Diego, please contact your placement advisor.

Diego is learning everyday! He is still mastering come & sit, but really enjoys the treat for doing well. He takes treats very gently. He tried our stairs for the first time. He was reluctant at first, but now takes them two at a time. Diego pulls hard on walks, but he is a smart dog and wants to please so I think that will change with training. He still has not had an accident in the house. He is now trained to ring the bells on the door to go outside. I think he likes them because he rings them to go outside to play too :) He loves to play outside. We have not seen any evidence of digging. He especially likes to play with our two resident dogs. They play tug of war, steal the tennis ball, and with their kongs when they need a little quiet play. He is very social with other dogs and people. He continues to be very gentle and loving with our two boys, 8 & 10 yo. He seeks them out for hugs. As of two nights ago Diego has slept in our room outside of his crate with no adverse issues. He just cuddles with the other dogs or us until morning. He is very playful in the morning and needs to expel energy.

Diego was rechecked on 11/19/12 for roundworm and tested negative. Great news! He was put on a cough suppressant for a slight raspiness he has had since he came to Ragom. The vet felt that because it hadn't cleared itself in 7 days it would be best to treat. She does not believe it is kennel cough. He has been on the medicine for 5 days and he seems to be doing better. It doesn't appear to be a big deal at all.

He met a cat at the vet...I don't think he'd do well living with a cat. He would do well in a home with other dogs and children. He needs a fenced yard and obedience training. If you are interested in meeting Diego or have questions about him, please let your placement advisor know. He is a gem!
