10/01/06: Introducing…….Dudley……….also known as Sir Dudley or Studley Dudley! Dudley has been with us for the last 2 weeks and because of a previously planned vacation for this foster mom, I am finally able to sit down and put some thoughts on paper.

Dudley is actually 6 years old, but acts like he is 2. He is a GREAT boy with load of charm! He is in good health aside from his 2nd bout of heartworms in 2 years, weighs 77 pounds which is about perfect for him and is developing a beautiful red coat now that he is on a good quality food. He is UTD and neutered, but he is Heartworm positive and will be getting his 2nd shot pretty soon.

He loves people, kids, teenagers, grumpy resident dogs, obnoxious neighbor puppies, very old senior girls and generally everyone! He understands when the grumpy dogs tell him they don’t want to play and when foster mom tells him that something is not acceptable. He LOVES to play with other dogs! He knows sit (has perfected it when I have a treat in my hand), come, off, and we are working on unt unnn (it is a sound that mimics momma dogs telling their puppies to knock it off – but I have not yet figured out how to spell the sound!). Dudley can be mouthy so we are working on that, but it is nothing a little obedience and practice can’t take care of. He also pulls while on leash, but is treat motivated that we can even get the Gentle Leader on him for a walk – although, I put a harness on him today and I had to look down to see if he had gotten off the harness, he was so mellow, I thought I lost him. He loves walks and especially car rides. He is the only foster that sits quietly in the back seat of the car and does NOT try to sit on my lap and drive, I have my fingers crossed that my Tillie doesn’t whisper that little trick in his ear. Dudley is also the only foster that Tillie will share the backseat with! He also crates like a dream, in fact he seems to like it in there. While I was in California, Dudley spent a few days with another generous foster family here in Iowa and they described him as “grateful” for anything that he gets. That foster family also heard him sigh!

Dudley’s previous life was not the happiest, he was turned over to a HS because they couldn’t keep him contained……..he was also not neutered at that time and lived outside. For a super social dog (or any dog for that matter) living in a outside kennel with little contact would be very difficult so he found ways to hang out with people and doggie friends, fortunately for Dudley, the HS turned him over to us so we can find him a wonderful forever home that will love him and include him in their daily lives. For a dog that had not been inside, I was amazed at his behavior inside, he hasn’t even attempted to mark anything in our house and that is a 1st for fosters in this house. He has gotten accustomed to the couch and bed – sorry – but it is hard to see how much he loves the soft life and make him get down. The 1st time he jumped in bed with us, my husband swears that he heard the sigh!

Even though Dudley will have to undergo another treatment for heartworms he will be talking to interested families. He is a wonderful dog and right now I think that he will need to go to a family that has a fenced in yard, a doggie friend would be nice but not mandatory, older kids that can appropriately show him when he gets mouthy that it is not acceptable, I also would love it if he can go to obedience, and my one non-negotiable requirement will be a family that will include him in their daily lives, he deserves it! He is a wonderful boy and is just blossoming in foster care. If you are an approved applicant and would like to talk to me about him, let placement know.

From Dudley's forever family...

Better late than never, I guess! We have been so fortunate to have had Dudley since November, 2006. He was quiet, at first, having been in a crate most of his life, and then in foster care while he was ironing out a couple of issues and being checked out. His foster mom warned us that he loved to play, and does he ever, still. He really ran his new brother, Scooter, ragged. Scooter had been raised with older Goldens, 15 and 12, so he had never known how to wrestle, play tug-of-war, etc. Dudley sure taught him that and more. I guess Dudley had not had much experience with siblings or many other dogs, and he jumped right into the life. He is still very, very active for a nine-year-old, and he has a great sense of humor and fun. We can't remember not having Duds in our lives.

Dudley was adopted today! He has a brother named Scooter at his new home and the two really hit it off. Thank goodness there is an endless supply of toys because I think a few will be lost over their tug-of-war games.

Thank you to his new family for giving Dudley his forever home. I know he will be happy (and completely spoiled) with you!

Hello, everyone.

It’s me Dudley! I just want to say YIPPY!!! My heartworm treatment is OVER! In celebration mom took Tillie and me to Petco and man, did I have a good time (I did hear her mutter “never again” under her voice, but that was because Tillie’s OCD kicked in while shopping in the store and she couldn’t keep her mouth off all the plush toys!). I got some new toys at Petco, but mostly I liked being out of the house and soaking up all the attention I got there. So many people mentioned how cute and happy and well behaved I was. No one said that about Tillie!

We are walking a couple times a day, and I really like that because now I can enjoy all the sights and sounds that the bike trail has to offer. Today it was a young buck that I thought was a really big dog! I even barked at it, as if to say, "Hey, come over and play," but it just ran the other way. I have tried over and over to get Tillie to play with me and it just isn’t gonna happen. So now I just lie quietly by her, dreaming of a doggie friend that will play with me.

I am sending a couple new pictures of me – beautiful me, if I must say so. One is of me after I saved my foster family from the very threatening evil kitty cat that I got at Petco. Mom would like to mention that I don’t chew things in general, but she did let me gut this plush toy after Tillie chewed its head off. As you can see, after saving the family I was ready for a long nap (I was right in the middle of a big yawn when mom took the picture)! Also, there is a picture of Dad and me in his chair--you can tell I’m becoming quite the cuddler.

Well, that's all for now. I am LOVING this indoor life and even better I really LOVE being part of this family! I’m still looking for my forever home, so if you are interested in me, let Placement know.

Dudley

Dudley has had an eventful 2 weeks since I last wrote. Last weekend we had a house full of relatives and we got to see how he handled new people and especially kids. As expected, he was great at welcoming them all and he totally enjoyed the kids (who were ages 10 – 16). He actually loved all the attention he got and really enjoyed the teenaged boys who would rough house with him.

As with all fosters that have not been inside dogs we have had some “funnies” with Dudley. By far the best “funny” with him was while getting unused bedrooms ready for our company. One of our bedrooms has an waterbed in it. Dudley being interested in all new things was helping me make the bed and kept putting his foot up on the edge and touching the mattress with his foot. Each time he did it he looked at me like “what is this”, each time he did this, I assured him that if he jumped up he was NOT going to like it. At some point after doing this for a few minutes I turned my back to grab something and looked back to find him FROZEN on the waterbed. His eyes were huge and he was NOT going to move. I finally (after I stopped laughing at him) lifted him off the bed and thought he’d never do that again. A ½ hour later I realized he was missing (he has been working hard at earning our trust over the last 3 weeks, so I don’t really watch him that closely at this point). I looked all over the house and finally looked in that bedroom and there he was, sprawled out on the waterbed looking like a king. I called to him, he lifted his head long enough to give me a look like “I’m not moving” and laid his head back down and slept there for over an hour.

We also welcomed Bailey (Bailey is a RAGOM star, as he does the Ask Bailey column in the RAGOM newsletter) into our home for 3 weeks as his mom and dad visit family overseas. Bailey is 12 and a lot like resident Tillie in that he is fine with younger dogs, but not willing to play. Dudley took Bailey’s “I don’t want to play with you” attitude and now is content to lay quietly by his side, occasionally stealing Bailey’s Kong.

The other big event was his 2nd and 3rd shot for treatment of his heartworms. I decided to board him a couple extra days to make sure he didn’t have another reaction (he developed a huge lump at the injection site last time). I must say that the look he gave me as I put him in his ICU kennel was heart-wrenching, and one that I will never forget. He is very able to express his feelings with the way he looks at you and it felt like he thought I was leaving him. He was still looking that way when I picked him up, but once home he was just fine. Keeping him quiet has been pretty easy, we keep a harness on him when he is not kenneled and it seems to work like a charm. Of course, once home, he thought Bailey was there to play with him and once Bailey gently reminded him that he does not play with young whipper-snappers, it appears all is well.

This guy is a wonderful fellow – someone is going to get a great dog. If Dudley might be for you, let placement know.
