Please welcome Miss Emma to RAGOM! Emma arrived in foster care on 11/07/15.
Emma was surrendered to a shelter in South Dakota and was welcomed into RAGOM with open arms. Emma is 8 years old and she is a retired puppy mill girl which means she had litter after litter of puppies her whole life. Emma is wary of all strangers but has done a fantastic job warming up to her foster mom. She does not like to feel cornered and will dance away from me if she feels too confined and too close a human. She approaches me easily when I am sitting in a chair and after a couple of pets on her head she will start to relax.
Emma, aka slipper thief, sock and clothing thief and toy hoarder, has done a fantastic job of getting used to living inside with a human and other dogs. On day two she decided she liked to grab up slippers and socks and clothes and leave them in the kitchen for me to find. She is so fast I missed the first few times but I have caught on to her antics and have started shutting bedroom doors and hiding my slippers under my ottoman so she won’t grab them while I am watching the news. Her favorite place to lay down is next the ottoman while I am sitting in my chair. I think she is so happy to have a soft place to lay her head. Such a sweet girl! She’s so happy in fact, she loves giving kisses to me, too.
Even though Emma loves her breakfast and dinner I don’t think she is very treat motivated. She would rather have lovin’ from her person(s). She currently sleeps in her crate at night and while I am at work. If she continues to have zero accidents she will be sleeping with the pack soon. Yes, that’s right - NO accidents in the house! So far I have been amazed by her, she was not even interested the first day she arrived to sit in a quiet spot and just chill out, she was “all in” from day one!
Emma will be getting spayed on 11/17/15 and can be adopted after that. She is currently also getting over whipworm and roundworm. She has taken all the medication needed and we will get a new fecal tests in a couple of weeks. Emma is heartworm negative and she looks like she may need to trim off a few pounds. She also may have had a recent litter (before she was surrendered).
Some things that Emma will need in her new home: Patience, patience and more patience. She is a special girl who will need to be given time to learn to trust and have a family who will give her space when she needs it. Emma will also need to have another confident dog in her family that she can learn from. I would recommend any children in the home be older, who will understand Emma’s need to learn how to trust humans.
I am working on getting good pictures of this amazing girl but she seems to shy away when I hold up the camera, so some of them are when she did not realize what I was doing.
