We’d like to WELCOME BACK Frisbee, a 7.5 yr. old, gorgeous, pure bred Golden Retriever, with papers showing his Champion blood lines. Frisbee is very happy, healthy and looking for what everyone most desires…a family that is willing to give him time, love, companionship and most of all—commitment!

 

If some dogs have all the LUCK, Frisbee would be the one without a drop of it looking at his history. Let’s recap...

This wonderful boy first came into RAGOM as a 1 yr. old after his family decided they would no longer have time for Frisbee with a brand new baby in the house. His 2nd “forever” family returned Frisbee after 5 years because they too became came too busy and no longer had time for Frisbee…nor did they feel they could handle a growing “leash aggression” issue that was developing in Frisbee. Both families noted that Frisbee was good with other dogs, cats, and kids. From his 2nd family, it was noted that Frisbee got along with other dogs at dog parks and doggie day care, but when Frisbee was restrained on a leash and/or on a tie out, he reacted with anxiety and lashed out and barked at selective dogs. So Frisbee returned to RAGOM with some issues to work through.

Luckily for him, Frisbee’s foster home in 2009 had another dog for Frisbee to learn good things from (as did his 1st foster home) and great foster parents that were committed to helping him thrive---and thrive he did! Soon, Frisbee found his 3rd “forever” family that were committed to continuing what Chad and Carla had started---unfortunately, the family is divorcing, and Frisbee is once again surrendered back to RAGOM. It was noted that the family stopped working with Frisbee and that daily leashed walks became few and far between and with this lack of exercise, mental stimulation, and good doggie social interaction, a new issue began to surface….the family noted some resource guarding/nipping issues. Anyone see a pattern here???

Frisbee spent 2 weeks in boarding and while there under-went a behavior evaluation for the resource guarding issue and I’m thrilled to tell you he PASSED with FLYING COLORS!

So...on 3/12/2011--Frisbee was welcomed into his 3rd foster home…with 3 resident dogs! And truth be told…I was a bit nervous as to how he would react to the resident dogs…that is…until I saw that sweet face! And after proper introductions were made...one by one...with a loose leash...and much to my surprise, it was a non-issue nor have there been any issues between Frisbee and our dogs---actually quite the opposite. He's blended right into our pack! These photos were taken on the 1st and 2nd day after he arrived.

It was also noted at his previous home that Frisbee didn’t like toys other than a game of Tug-o-War. But if you could have seen his face light up when he saw the toy box…you wouldn’t have believed it. He LOVES stuffed animals, balls, tug toys, socks…and brings you something whenever he wants to play…or sleep J

OK…so now I’m thinking I picked up the wrong dog from boarding…right?

So FAR….this is what we have experienced with Frisbee:

  • Frisbee plays like a puppy---very mouthy...will nip at your coat or gloves when he wants to engage in play…very much like a dog would engage another dog in play or rough house. This is easily redirected or stopped—but obviously he was not taught when he was a puppy that this is not how you play with humans.
  • Frisbee gets VERY excited about going on a walk! He will barely sit still to put on the leash---you can tell this is his favorite thing to do! I chose to walk Frisbee with one of my other confident dogs because I started to see how much Frisbee was watching the dogs for cues in the house and in the yard. We’ve been on several walks...passed dogs in yards, horses behind fences, and peacocks----yes…I said peacocks (strange neighborhood we live in). Frisbee noticed each animal but paid no attention…again keeping in step with the resident dog. We will continue looking for a “leashed” dog to pass…maybe as the weather gets nicer more will be out.
  • Frisbee hates the Gentle Leader (good for some—not for all) and judging from the permanent black mark across his nose, he's lived in one for years. I thought I’d try it without and see if the companion dog would help with the pulling on our walk and he walked very well. I can’t help but wonder if that pressure across his nose only added to his irritation and to the leash aggression issue?
  • Frisbee is a good communicator. If he has something of high value, like a raw hide, he feels the need to take it and run. If you try to take it from him he will give you a warning growl. Good Boy! If you offer to trade him a treat for his bone…he will gladly trade. If another dog walks towards him while he has the high value item, he will also give a warning growl. This is good doggie communication. What we’ve noticed is that the growling we heard the 1st day has diminished greatly as Frisbee is realizing that no one wants to take his things from him.
  • Frisbee is totally potty trained and will stand by the door when he needs to go out.
  • Frisbee has had FREE ROAM since arriving without issue day or night, does not chew on anything that’s not a toy, and is perfectly fine when left alone with the other dogs when no one is home.
  • Frisbee takes treats very nice with an open palm hand. He’s VERY treat motivated!
  • Frisbee is a good sleeper and a great snuggler! He loves to be loved and knows how to give love!

We really REALLY like this boy and still think we possibly picked up the wrong dog from boarding!

I’m sure we will learn more and more about Frisbee and he will show us more of who he is and what he needs to feel safe and loved. We are no longer looking for a “forever” home---since he’s had 3 of those kind…but we ARE looking for his PERMANENT home and from what I've discovered through reading his notes and living with him, I truly believe he needs to have the following in his permanent home:

  • A mentor dog---another good dog with a great disposition to show him all the behaviors that we desire in good family dogs. Frisbee needs other dogs in his world, in his home, in his family.
  • A fenced yard so that he does not have to be on a tie out but can roam free within the boundaries
  • Older children (10 and up)---older children are best suited for Frisbee as they provide more consistency and predictability for him to feel safe in his environment. Also---because of his mouthy play.
  • And the MOST IMPORTANT requirement --TIME & COMMITMENT to this incredibe dog! This is a dog that has had more homes than any dog should ever have. He has what it takes to be perfect----he just needs the perfect companion and the perfect environment!

We will be attending the RAGOM event on Saturday at the Quarry PetSmart on 3/19. Frisbee will be accompanied by Resident Miley (RAGOM dog #08-005) and we’ll stay for as long as everyone is comfortable and having fun! Please come out and give Frisbee a very special WELCOME BACK!

Frisbee journeyed to The Bridge on Monday, July 27th, following his fur brother, Jax, who, always wanting to lead, left on Monday, June 15th. Frisbee was diagnosed with lymphoma in early May, Jax with lung cancer in later May. Both boys rallied their last weekends with us, which for Frisbee meant swimming in the lake, chewing on bones, eating chocolate chip cookies and deli chicken. Mr. Fris and we set goals of hope when he was diagnosed...to celebrate 4 years as a pack on May 23rd and his 12th birthday on June 23rd. Thanks to Dr. Green, he surpassed those dates with grace, dignity, and his indefatigable ability to love. For Frizzard, it was all about love...for walks, the lake, deck time, food, car rides, lullabies, his pack, and making snow angels...always accented with Frisbee crazy barks. We never knew "neck hugging" until The Frisbot came into our lives. With Dr. Green's aid, Our Boy's journey to The Bridge began peacefully at home with us by his side. We were SO lucky.

So much deep, heartfelt gratitude to RAGOM for being, Dennis and JoAnne for approving our household, and Julie and Jeff for the call to consider Fris. All of this joy because of Julie's call.

From Frisbee's new family:

Dusk is coming on as I write. We had an absolutely awesome weekend of weather – sun, decent temps, and enough of a breeze to keep mosquitoes at bay. Jax is sprawled out on the floor, sound asleep...Fris is sprawled out on the couch, sound asleep. This, after two days of walking, running and swimming. Fris cannot take his eyes off the lake! We have a huge red pine that fell into the water a few years ago. The four of us went down to the dock this afternoon to get some water time in. While on shore, Mr. Fris Nose stuck his head in under the roots of this tree and came out with the remains of a fairly good-sized fish in his mouth! I did not know I could still move that fast. It now rests at the bottom of the lake.

Peter took Frisbee to his first vet appointment this past week, to meet the crew and to get the OK for a Heartguard prescription. Everything checked out just fine and Fris charmed everyone at the clinic.

You would be so proud of him on lead in town. There is a house that sometimes has a pit bull on a tie-out (no fence!!!!) Jax and I were ahead of Frisbee and Peter, saw that this dog was out, and flagged Peter a heads-up. We all walked kitty-corner from this dog, who was barking and pulling on his cable. Well, Mr. Frisbee pranced la-dee-da-ly, eyes on Peter, paying no mind to what was going on. We will not walk past that house again, but we were so proud of our boys, the way they handled that stretch of the walk. Have you seen the movie, “UP?” If you have, you know...”SQUIRREL!” Know that Frisbee does...”RABBIT!” really, really well.

WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS!!!  Frisbee’s BIRTHDAY WISH arrived a month early!!!
 
An INCREDIBLE family---meeting every “wish” we had on our list for Frisbee’s “permanent” home—cleared their schedules last Sunday and Monday, packed their bags, and traveled a long way just to meet our very special boy!   After two days together which included a doggie slumber party with the family’s resident dog Jax, we are happy to announce that Frisbee happily jumped in the car with his new family on Monday and drove away to Happily Ever After. The comfort and connection Frisbee had with the “H” family was undeniable and easily put my heart at ease as I waved Good-Bye to one of the most incredible foster dogs we’ve had the pleasure of knowing.  It’s funny…just when you start to think there might not be that “perfect” family for your foster dog—they show up!

We knew Frisbee needed another dog in his world to be truly happy and when he met Jax as if he’d known him his whole life, we knew this was a great start!

Frisbee’s new mom and dad are the BEST KIND of adopters as they were not looking for a dog to best fit their needs, but rather looking to be the family to best fit the needs of a Rescue Dog.  If I didn’t believe in angels before, I sure do now!  Frisbee is a very lucky boy to say the least and will be spoiled rotten by Peter and Charlie.

Today, I received Frisbee’s first update as a member of the “H” family and my heart continues to smile…
 
Hi Julie and Jeff,

Things are going wonderfully well.  Friz has adapted perfectly well and we to him.
Only two problems so far.  Sometime during the first night he marked the leg of a chair.  That seemed to us as good doggie logic, setting out his space in a new place.  The other is his food. He would not touch the food that came with him.  He will only eat Jax’s special food.  I tried another, but same reaction.  Will keep trying.

People come over to comment on our beautiful dogs when we are out walking.  They are quite a pair.  We fashioned a lead for Jax like the one you gave us, and the long walks together have gone very well.  Jax seems to like it that way too, although he has to be just a step ahead of Friz, who often lags as he needs to sniff more.

The first night went just as you had predicted.  Subsequently, Friz has insisted on sleeping between us, with Jax at his usual place at the foot of the bed.  Suddenly, a queen size seems small!  And Friz sleeps through the night until the alarm goes off at 6:45.  What a remarkable boy!

Jax and Friz love running errands in the truck.  Went to the doggie park yesterday.  No other dogs, but they enjoyed romping together.

No competition to speak of between the two of them.  Just once in a while, a low abbreviated growl.  Jax has affected that as well.  They even were caught drinking from the same water bowl at the same time!

Gotta go to a meeting.  Thank you so much for training Friz into the wonderful member of our pack that he is today.  More later.

Frisbee is heading to the Lake today where his family spends 4 days every week, so we will anxiously await this “Water Boy’s” reaction to having a lake of his very own!  So excited for him!!!

Hi Friends! It’s ME—Frisbee! 
Finally…a break in the rain!  I thought Foster Dad might need to start building an Ark!
 
Truth be told---I love water in all forms----snow, rain, puddles, ponds, lakes, and—when I’m desperate, standing pools of rain water will do just fine!   I don’t think FM was too happy when she found me relaxing in some standing water out back right after we got back from the doggie spa---sorry FM---I couldn’t resist! 
I still look beautiful don’t I?

Frisbee continues to thrive at his foster home!  He loves to explore the yard with the other dogs.  He’s definitely a free spirit---no “high maintenance” here—other than trying to keep him dry :-)  It was noted that Frisbee LOVES the water and will stay in the lake all day if he could.  I will note---he’s not much of a fan of bubble baths :-)

Frisbee loves the outdoors, be it to explore or just to relax on the deck.  His new love is to find bones---real bones left over from our home’s previous owner and his hunting escapades.  We thought we had rid our yard of all the skeletal remains, that is---until Frisbee showed us where the rest are.  He has volunteered to earn his keep and finish the job for us. 

Frisbee has made such great progress on our daily walks and one of the ways that Sam and Frisbee have bonded is through these walks.  I’ve learned that walking dogs together is one of the best ways to help them bond and feel good together.  A side-by-side leashed walk provides a neutral space and an exercise most dogs truly love and it’s proving to be the key for Frisbee to bond with new dogs.  When Frisbee first came to our home, we walked him with a different dog each day.   This type of exercise has allowed Frisbee to bond with each of his foster fur siblings and with us as well.  Once bonded, Frisbee is a friend for life.

On our way home from the events on Saturday, Frisbee rested his big head on my shoulder as if to say, “FM, please don’t make me come to these things anymore.”  He was totally exhausted from all the interaction with so many leashed dogs and he explained it this way:
 
FM, you know how you don’t like spiders?  Now---I know you have been working on your “issue” with spiders and sometimes you are fine when one crosses your path.  But, you do still tend to freak out when 2-3 spiders are found in one space—don’t you?  Now imagine how you would feel if you were on the end of a leash and 2, 3, 4 big hairy spiders walked in the room and then more came in and you couldn’t leave the room because you were tied to the end of a leash.  Would you be a little anxious FM?  Maybe yell, scream, maybe even bark a bit like me?  Do you understand how I feel now and why I’m so exhausted? 
 
Because you have helped me, I’m ok with leashed dogs on our walks.  Sometimes you distract me and I like that.  And sometimes I get to meet other dogs and I like that too—most of them anyways.  I am even ok with dogs I don’t know in a wide open space as long as we are all free to run and be by ourselves (unleashed), but I really don’t like these events you bring me to.  I’m so anxious when I’m bombarded with one leashed dog after another for hours on end and it’s totally stressful—not to mention—so unflattering!  OK FM? I want people to see me as I am at home with my friends and with you guys or on our walks, not when I’m stressed out. Do you understand now?
 
I understand Frizz…and I’m very sorry for being such a dunce!  You are such a sweet boy and you are so right!  Thank you for explaining it like that.  I promise...no more events.  We’ll just wait for your “permanent” family to find you right where you are most comfortable and happy.  Because that’s where they will see the Frisbee we love so much!

Hi Friends!
 
Look what FM brought home---another foster dog--UUUUhhhgggg!  Of course, I minded my manners PERFECTLY and FM gave me a big KISS for doing so.  "Nothing to it," I say!  I told you, I just gotta meet the dogs and I'm good. It's the keeping me away from dogs that I don't like; and so far, this new guy is ok with me.

FM says she booked a day at the Spa for me and the new guy because we are going to be out at the Quarry PetSmart RAGOM event on 4/30.  Can someone tell me what a Spa is and should I be worried about this? 
 
You know I'm still scanning the horizon for my very special family and now FM wants me to keep an extra eye out for Sam's forever family too!  Geez...a rescue dog's work is never done is it?


At least I have all my friends out there bringing me almonds----right?  Hint! Hint!

Hi Frisbo, Fris-ba-nator, Frizz FANS!
 
Look at that HAPPY face!

Frisbee is just a sweet boy and so much fun!  I thought I’d share some of Frisbee’s favorite outside activities.

Loves to stop and take in the scenery...

Frisbee LOVES to be outside with his pack/people for any activity---he has just started to engage in chase with the dogs and now lets Jonah lick his face---totally precious!  He’s still not quite ready to all out wrestle with them…but he was definitely testing the waters this weekend with Jonah, Miley and Shadow and it was OHHH—so good to see! 
 
Yesterday, on our walk, we were approaching the house with the Husky and Frisbee looked up at me and I smiled and gave him a small treat to thank him for looking to me.  He’s so amazing!  Now that the weather is getting warmer,  we will begin our doggie parties and we know Frisbee will have a ball!  At one time in his former life, Frisbee went to doggie day care and to dog parks, so we can’t wait to reignite this great social activity for him.

Hi Friends!!!  It's ME--Frisbee and I think it’s MY turn to tell you all about myself!  I know FM means well, but GEEZ…all she ever talks about is training, training, training.  Here’s the deal…I’m a great dog!  I’m just like any other dog that didn’t have good training or socialization when I was young, but I’m a very quick learner, so enough with the training already!  Let’s get on with all the really GREAT things about me…ok?   
 
I can think of 7 GREAT things about me right off the bat…ready?

#1—I really like other dogs and I’m a really good communicator!  Well—I guess that is two things, but they do go together.  You see, I love my foster fur brothers and sister and so many of the dogs I meet along the way.  Once we do the “official sniff,” life is pretty darn good! One way I communicate to FM is I bark 3 times in a row with my high pitch bark when I’m excited and want to meet or play with a 4-legger or 2-legger. And I have a low bark when I’m scared and want to scare away what ever I’m uncomfortable with.  But otherwise, that’s the ONLY reason I bark...FM loves that about me…she knows my language and I know hers so we can watch out for each other.
 
#2—I love to watch TV with my people (after my walk that is) and I'm a really good armrest. 

#3—I also double as a blanket!  

#4—I don't chew on anything inappropriate---at all! I have free roam and I don’t touch a thing.  Leave as long as you like and the house will be in the same shape as you left it.  I only chew on my rope, sticks, rawhides, and I will occasionally de-stuff a doggie stuffed animal…but that’s only because I like them better without the stuffing.  FM says the only way I’d be a better house guest is if I could do the laundry for her.  Hmmm…I'm sure she'll have a training for that too! 

#5—I retrieve lousy rope throws that land in the trees.  Nice job FM!

#6—I am a great alarm clock.  I sleep right next to you on my dog bed all night and then at exactly 5:15a.m. I will wake you up so you won’t be late---even though FM figured out how to push my “Snooze” button.  Yep---she did!  The weekends are my most favorite because FD won’t get up and we have to double and triple team him!  It’s really fun!

#7— I’m Frisbee, the sweetest, funniest, cutest, thankfulest, and most easygoing dog in town! And I sit really cool too!

Hey…I have to toot my horn here! But go ahead and just ask anyone…I’m a really good dog looking for a really good family.  I would love to have another fur friend in my home, a fenced yard because FM says my recall is in “Senior Selective” mode, and a family or companion that has some dog experience and understanding that we are not all perfect but are perfectly trainable and absolutely loveable!  So…what do you think?  I know FM could name 107 great things about me…but seriously, I'll probably have you at “Hello.” 
 
So…if you know my “permanent family” or you ARE my “permanent family,” what are you waiting for?  We have a whole summer waiting for us!  Did I mention I LOVE swimming?  OK---you know what to do…contact your placement advisor so we can say, “Hello.”

HI Frisbee Fans!!!
 
Frisbee has had a WONDERFUL week with much SUCCESS to Praise!

Frisbee is such a great dog!!!  He loves his daily walks and is gaining so much confidence when passing other dogs.  We have been working with a strategy called "stuff the dog" which conditions a reactive dog that used to associate bad things/negative energy with unknown dogs to associate "good things" when a new dog is present.  For example, as soon as we see an unknown dog in a yard or approaching on a leash, I start giving Frisbee yummy treats and praising him "before" there is any reactive actions.  And if reactive actions start, I redirect Frisbee off path, gain his attention with a treat---make eye contact with him and reward his redirection with the treat, then begin to "stuff the dog" as we continue on until we've passed the dog.  Regardless of the other dogs actions, Frisbee will choose the yummy treats and the happy praising over the dog--oftentimes stopping to sit while I give him treats even when the unknown dog is in close range.  The goal is to have Frisbee associate new dogs with "good things" and for now that entails treats & praise.   On Wednesday, he met a HUGE unleashed Husky (no owner to be seen---uuugghhh!) and of course I thought---"OH MY---here we go..."  Luckily I knew this dog to be non-aggressive, but this was Frisbee's first meeting.  Much to my surprise, and while "stuffing the dog," Frisbee approached and they both allowed each other to sniff the rear ends.  There was a little growling and then eye contact (which is not what we want) so Frisbee got uncomfortable and we moved on.  Friday we encountered the same dog on our walk---this time the Husky  was on a long lead in his yard (Thank You Owner)..and Frisbee noticed so I started "praising and stuffing" and he passed without so much as a raised ear.  YEAH!!!! 
 
Another HUGE success was at the RAGOM event on Saturday.  It was our first time using the "stuff the dog" in tight quarters with lots of unknown dogs present.  I assumed I needed to take the treat "value" up a notch since the distractions would be enormous and so might the anxiety.  Armed with Resident RAGOM dog Miley and a pocket full of day old grilled chicken, I am thrilled to report how incredibly well he did the whole time (2 1/2 hours)!  One volunteer even commented on how different he was from the first event---definitely a more comfortable doggie!  There were about 10 dogs at the event...lots of people and kids...and out of every greeting, there was only one dog he met where growling took place and it was with a young more energetic pup.  This is not uncommon--very normal and so had we not been in such tight crowded quarters, this greeting attempt may have been successful---or not.  Not all dogs have to like each other----they just have to be polite---just like people! 
 
Frisbee was also tested at the event with the resource guarding of a high value item. At home, we no longer have to give him treats when he has his bone or rawhides---we pet him and sit next to him when he has his high value treats.  He will trade easily for something else and once he trades for the other item, I trade him back.  With the other dogs...he doesn't have an issue at all...he will turn his head away with the bone if another dog is present just until he sees they are not interested.  But the question was, "Would the same be true in an unfamiliar environment with unfamiliar dogs and people?"  The answer is...training pays off... but needs to be reinforced in every new environment as was the case at Chuck and Don's.  With treats, Frisbee is happy to share and will sit and wait for his treat no matter who he is surrounded by. 

Of course..Foster mom was not paying attention and Frisbee grabbed a BIG dog biscuit off the shelf.  Now, surrounded by unknown people and other dogs, Frisbee felt the need to give a warning growl (excellent communication), but FM was not going to have any guarding going on in a busy store full of people and dogs!  Out came the chicken for a trade...but it was not valuable enough (HA!) so I had to grab a "better" biscuit off the shelf and it must have been considered a good trade in Frisbee's eyes.  He traded, and after being praised and petted, we traded back--thus earning the right to have the HUGE biscuit as a gift with no further growling or issues.  The training method we are using is always about  "giving" rather than "taking away."  This has been VERY effective with Frisbee!  I am so very proud of him and so happy he has learned to trust me when it comes to trading or leash walking ...even in unfamiliar places.  It's been 3 weeks of training and worth every minute spent!  You can just see his confidence and comfort level rising!

Fribee is very comfortable with our dogs and totally respects them.  The same is true after a good introduction to new dogs.  Once deemed "safe," he is happy to co-exist with them.  Frisbee has not once challenged any of our dogs---whether it's chasing after a ball or waiting for food/treats.  He interacts with them, but mostly does his own thing.  He interacts with them, but he is still somewhat reserved in play so he watches them more than he plays at this point.  I imagine he's learning the "rules of play" from our dogs and he's still learning what it's all about.  I can't wait to see the day when he totally engages in play with them.  He wants to play with us (like a dog plays)---as I imagine that is all he knows---being an only dog all his life---so we are working on transferring that playful spirit over to the dogs---so he can enjoy play in the context it's meant to be in.  
 
All in all, Frisbee has to be one of our easiest foster dogs.  He is truly a delight to have in our home.  He makes us laugh, he's not needy, totally plays by the rules, and he loves to be loved.  Frisbee moved right in and made himself at home and allows us to help him overcome his fears.  He knows we love him and that is why he is so eager to please.  It's unfortunate that 3 families gave up such an incredible dog...probably never realizing what he truly needed to feel safe, happy and self-confident.  We know his next family will be thankful they did give him up because to love Frisbee is to understand the real meaning of "Man's Best Friend."  What a gift Frisbee will be...

Hi Frisbee Fans!  This 75lb. LAP Dog will be out at the RAGOM Chuck and Don event in Forest Lake this Saturday from 11-1. 

We will be shopping for a new Tug-a-War toy rope---seems the expensive, rubber Kong one is unimpressive to Frisbee---he seems to be more of the “natural” wood/cotton toy boy I guess.  HA!

Hi Friends---it's ME--Frisbee! Nothing like a Sunny Sunday Drive with friends is there? Everyone Pile In...Literally!Ahhhhh...this is the lifeI'm a great co-pilot First a long walk, then a car ride....ohhhhh Life is Golden here in RAGOMland! Catch ya later tater...Frisbee!  P.S.  I aced the rawhide and bone training quiz today and yesterday----nothing to it!  FM is pretty proud of me!  A couple more quizzes FM says...but I know I'll ace them too!  It's easy when you got a nice family helping you out!

HI Frisbee Fans!
 
Well…this lover boy has settled right into his comfort zone this week! So HAPPY and PLAYFUL!

 

For the past couple of nights, he gets the “ZOOMIES” outside and starts running sooooo fast in a large circle and all the other dogs chase him and then Frisbee reverses and chases the dogs.  HA!  He feels very comfortable with our dogs and really enjoys their company.  Frisbee also takes doggie correction really well from each of the dogs and will bow and turn his head away from them when receiving a behavior correction from them.  For example, Frisbee was trying to hog Foster Dad’s attention and pushed Miley right out of the way, but Miley was not going to have any of that and corrected Frisbee about his rude behavior and he rightly backed away without any issue.  He totally respects the dogs and has no issues with resource guarding while eating with them, taking treats next to them, or sharing toys.  The only thing he will “guard” is a bone or rawhide----he will run and hide and then growl if he senses that someone wants his bone. 
 
Somewhere along the way---things were taken from Frisbee and we now have to show him that we are about “giving” him things---and about sharing.  There is plenty for all.  When we give the dogs bones or rawhides, they all sit nicely and get their bone—Frisbee has no issue with waiting for his bone—its only when Frisbee runs and hides with bone that he feels like someone is going to take it from him and he growls.  For the last 2 nights, I’ve not allowed him to “hide” and I’ve kept him with the other dogs while everyone enjoyed their bone.  Once relaxed, I offer him additional treats while he is enjoying his bone to show him that am about “giving” him even more things---not about “taking” from him.   After about a 30 min. session of “giving” last night, he was willing to leave the bone when we went outside to play (HUGE improvement)…though he was the 1st one in the house when we returned making sure it was still there—and it was---and no one else wanted it so he sniffed it and then came and laid down with us…YEAH--progress!  WE will continue working on the bone thing daily until he totally gets it!
 
Frisbee has had free roam with the dogs this week while we are at work and has been a very good boy with the house and the other dogs!  Not a thing out of place when we return and everyone is happy.  Frisbee has learned that when we come home its PLAY/WALK time!  He gets a 2 mile leashed walk every day which seams to be more than enough at this time for Frisbee---not too much stamina yet for the really long walks---but he walks really well with one of the other dogs at his side.  Frisbee also enjoys multiple free run yard play times (approx. 30 minutes each) 2X per day which he totally LOVES…and then he’s pooped!  

We have a family B-day party this weekend so no events for Frisbee…BUT we are planning on attending the Chuck and Don 4/9/11 event for more leashed dog interaction fun J  Good, positive, repeated EXPOSURE is serving Frisbee really well!  He’s such a good student!

Hello Frisbee Fans!!!!

I also want to thank everyone that stopped out to Welcome Frisbee back today!  Now you can see why we adore him!  He was SO good with all the people---he especially loved the kids (and the treats they gave him) and really ate up all the attention!  ---Thank you so much!  He definitely knows he is LOVED!
 
I bet you all are waiting anxiously to find out how this so-called “leash-aggressive” dog did for hours in a room full of “leashed” dogs???   Well, I must admit, I was very pleased with Frisbee’s overall behavior for 3 hours of non-stop introductions!   We probably should not have stayed as long as we did for his first outing with a “reactive” dog, but it really helped me to learn more about Frisbee and his level of reactibility…so in that case it was really good.

 

Frisbee was very excited when we first arrived and I imagine a bit anxious as well. He met a bunch of “leashed” dogs right away (the first time since arriving over a week ago) with some barking but after everyone got a good “rear end” sniff ---all was well.  There were some dogs that Frisbee felt the need to BARK, BARK, BARK at especially if no “sniff” was allowed by the other dog.  It was really interesting to watch because we had not experienced any reactivity with him with our dogs or dogs in yards we had past on walks over the past week—so it was good to finally see some of this so-called, “leash aggression” his previous owners alluded to.   
 
Frisbee definitely was uncomfortable with super confident dogs or hyper dogs that stared right at him or moved towards him in an excitable way---especially if they were barking or growling.  If a dog barked at Frisbee, his first reaction was to bark back which started a barking match to see who was “bigger and louder.”  Of course this barking match sounds terrible, but it was really a shouting match to say “HEY—BACK OFF---I don’t like you or trust you and I don’t know what else to do so I’ll try to scare you away with my big voice!”  The funny thing is---Frisbee’s bark sounds like a Bark on Helium.  Not sure what happen to his “barker” but it’s pretty pitiful!  
 
Then there were dogs that could care less about Frisbee, ones that let Frisbee smell them and made no attempt to be vocal with him----these doggies he loved right off the bat!  This is his “new” girl-friend Chloe 10-205

Then there were dogs that he first barked at, then sniffed, then witnessed me pet and love up the dogs, and then Frisbee would relax and just lay down—thus determining the dog to be a non-threat.  Below is a Foster Dad with Sampson 10-385 at the end of the leash Jim is holding; Frisbee and Sampson got along perfectly after their initial greeting---Sampson is a very even keel dog –very much like Frisbee’s 3 foster fur siblings.   Jim also had treats, so Frisbee was happy to hang around.   

 
This is Frisbee with former foster dad and foster fur-butt brother, Gopher, and new friend Graham 11-011 –both non-confrontational, non-issue dogs.  In this picture, Frisbee is observing a new RAGOM dog entering…Brody 11-051.  Their initial interaction was a BARKY one, but after some “rear-end” introductions and Foster mom showing Brody some loving…Frisbee and Brody were cool and could hang with each other because Brody was of the non-confrontational type—nice and submissive---the way Frisbee likes ‘em!  
 

By the 3rd hour of the event (bad Foster Mom), Frisbee was exhausted and over his limit with new dog introductions, so he was a bit more edgy…sure can’t blame him for that, and Foster mom should know better.  But at least now, we have a good base line for Frisbee and an understanding of what he can handle, what he likes, what he feels threatened by, and some good ideas of how to help him when he feels uncomfortable…thanks to all my foster dog friends and fellow dog lovers! 
 
As you can imagine, Frisbee was REALLY ready for some quiet time—He and Miley hit the sack for a nap together as soon as they got home!  Ahhhh….what a day!  
 

I’m pretty proud of this boy!  It’s only been a week and we have a very good EGG here that just needs some good positive “reactive” training to make him feel safe and confident and we are so willing to help him!  Stay tuned…it’s only going to get better and better for The Friz-BO!
