Sad news. Gabriel died suddenly this morning. He was about 13 or so, exact age unknown. He had a normal walk and ate breakfast heartily then suddenly collapsed. We rushed him to the U of M vet hospital, conscious, breathing heavy, but unable to get up or stand on his own. They knew he was fading fast because they literally ran out to get us while they were examining him in the ER. He had some sort of cardiac event - they were going to try and drain the blood that had accumulated from his pericardial sac to get a better idea as to what was happening but he died before they could do so, all within about 90 minutes of the first symptoms. He was a great dog and we will miss him terribly. But we were glad that he was healthy to the end and that this happened fast while we were at home and with him. Although otherwise healthy, he was getting less and less mobile and we are thankful he spared us from making painful decisions someday in the future. Erin (our other Ragom girl) will be alone for a little bit (except for her cat friends) but, all coincidentally, we had already made arrangements to adopt another Golden mix (about 7 years old) in a couple of weeks (from a friend of a friend who can’t keep her), so Erin will soon have a new friend. Gabriel had it pretty good here, and went from USDA 501, his tag number at the puppy mill, to Gabriel, much loved dog (aka Jeeber, Handsome, Sweet Boy, Mister or Big Lug). Raise your glass to Gabriel! This picture is Gabriel at a cabin we often rent overlooking Lake Superior. He loved to hang out on the deck looking through the plexiglass at the Lake and the chipmunks (mostly the chipmunks!). |
