Grier is a young girl who is ready to enjoy life. She is a mix-breed dog with Golden Retriever-like hair who spent her first years on a chain outside and is amazingly sweet yet understandably timid right now. She is in good health and has very good manners.
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

I'm very pleased to introduce Grier, a lovely young golden-like girl who is ready to start enjoying life. We estimate that she's between 1 and 2 years old and even if she's not a golden retriever, she has some of the characteristics that make goldens so wonderful. She is sweet and gentle and slowly opening up to her new life. Grier spent her first years chained outside and it's hard to know just how much time she spent with her people. She is learning that life as a RAGOM foster dog is very good and she watches our other dogs to learn just how things should be done. The first few nights here she slept in her kennel in a quiet room by herself but now we've moved her kennel to the living room and she's happy there, joining in the play on the floor when she wants and napping in her kennel whenever she feels the need for quiet time. We no longer close the kennel door, she can come and go as she wants. Still, imagine our surprise this morning when we found her in our bedroom with the rest of the dogs. We may have to get a dog bed for her and make space for one more in the bedroom!

Grier has impeccable house manners, has not had an accident, has not shown any interest in counter surfing or even getting on the furniture. She has started to enjoy a chew toy and watching her play with that makes you just smile. A big thrill for her is running in the backyard, big playful circles with our youngest dog, showing off her fancy footwork and strategic left and right turns.

Grier is current on all her shots, has been spayed and is in good health. An ideal home for Grier would have another dog so she can continue to learn about the world and build her confidence. She would not be a good candidate for a tie-out situation. She is very obedient on a leash but she needs time to be off-leash to flourish. A family with dog experience, patience and the willingness help her learn about the good-life will be rewarded with a very loyal companion. She was slow to trust us initially but within the short time she's been with us she's blossomed and this morning enjoyed being hand-fed waffles -- we are guessing that was a first for her! She is quiet and a bit timid but slowly developing trust that life is good.

Grier has hit the jackpot -- she started obedience class and that very same week met new friends who welcomed her into their home. She now has a lovely golden sister who will help her continue to develop confidence and to master new situations. Her new family is a perfect match for Grier, they have experience in training dogs and they have a great house and yard for her to call home. Grier's new dog buddy is a therapy dog and a 'Reader' dog in the schools -- she'll be able to teach Grier all she needs to know about the joys of being a regular dog. Way to go Grier -- you are one lucky girl!

Grier has been enjoying these last few weeks, she's gone to the vet with several of our dogs to have her nails trimmed and handled it all with ease. Having her buddies along with her ensured that she'd feel comfortable. She's become more playful and is steadily growing more comfortable with the household routine. She *loves* greeting us at the door when we come home, no matter how long we've been away. Yesterday we were gone for 6 hours and she handled it just fine. She's learned the Sunday morning waffle routine and can now understands why the resident dogs get so excited about waffles! She really shows no interest in human food but waffles are a different matter entirely! She loves waffles!

Grier has become special buddies with our Abbey, a former RAGOM foster who is now part of our family. Abbey and Grier spend time together playing what we call lazy dog play. They both just roll around on their backs and play bitey face without even working up a sweat. Great play for a hot summer day. Grier also spends time grooming Abbey by gently washing her head and face, something they both seem to enjoy.

With Fourth of July activities going on, we've learned that Grier is not a big fan of fireworks however she was fairly easily soothed by following us closely and sleeping close to the bed. She wasn't comfortable but she got through it all with her dog buddies and the help of soothing words and gentle petting.

Here are some pictures of Grier -- no big action shots, she's more of a lounger than a runner although she does enjoy running big circles occasionally with our Winnie. She roams the backyard, enjoys an occasional barkfest at mysterious sounds from the ravine and then really enjoys her nap time. Doesn't sound like a bad life, does it? She eats with enthusiasm, shares her toys well and is very easy to live with! She has a lot of love to give as she learns to trust her people and gains experience with her new life style!

If you can provide the security and routine that Grier thrives on, please submit an inquiry!

Grier had a great week - she is now very comfortable with most of the household routines, knows where to go when it's time to eat, has learned not to bother other dogs while they're eating, has discovered the joys of getting on the comfy sunroom chair, and best of all she got to meet a new RAGOM friend, Mick, and played with him non-stop for a week. Everyone was happy, lots of sticks to share, toys to chew and everyone enjoyed romping in the yard when the temperatures were kind.

Grier is not so interested in having her picture taken but I haven't given up. She's quite suspicious about it all but I'll keep trying. I'd like to get a picture of her happy face and her tail wagging - we'll see how that goes this week.

Here are some things we learned about Grier this week:

  • She was very cautious when she met Mick - he's an energetic young dog and it took her several hours of observing him before she engaged in play. At that point, however, she was all in. They played well and napped well too. Nothing like happy, tired dogs!
  • Grier was also cautious about meeting new people and did the same observation, waiting and watching before she opened up. Not bad to be cautious.
  • Grier barks only occasionally and is yet to have any accidents in the house. She doesn't jump up on people and is cautious and restrained when we have company.

Now that she's almost done losing her winter coat, we see that she's really a medium-sized dog with a pretty brown coat with red highlights. I'll work on better pictures for next week!
