9 yr old Gunner was surrendered to RAGOM on Monday. He is very sweet with people and loves to put his nose on your lap for pets and love. As you can see he has the sweetest face with a personality to match. Gunner does need to lose about 40 lbs. though.

I've only known Gunner a couple of days but wanted to get his sweet face up on the website. He had his vet visit this morning and we will get his tests results back tomorrow. They are checking to make sure he isn't overweight due to his thyroid.

Gunner doesn't let his weight hold him back. He runs just fine around the yard and can easily get up on the sofa in his room.

The surrendering owners say Gunner gets along well with other dogs and older children. He doesn't much like my senior girl so I will have to check this out further. My senior girl doesn't get along with many dogs so Gunner may be picking up on this.

Gunner is fun to watch sleep because he moans alot and his little legs start running. One thing that is very endearing is that Gunner smiles. When he first got out of the truck to meet me he raised his lips in a big smile and wagging tail. This smile just melts your heart. This might scare someone who doesn't know it is a smile but it is very cute.

I will send more updates as I get to know this handsome sweet guy.

Gunner has found his forever home!! And to think it was right under his nose the entire time! Gunner is going to continue to live with the family that has taken care of him for the last year, which includes fur butt brother Kobi, and his human family (mom, dad, 2 brothers, and a sister). Gunner makes his human family smile and laugh every day with his vocal and non-vocal antics. He loves being part of a busy family and has the same incredibly big smile for all who enter his home. Gunner wishes to send a forever grateful thanks to those that have sponsored him and all the other seniors, who are just waiting to give their hearts to a new family. Gunner says, "Thanks for taking me in, RAGOM!"

Why would you want to adopt a mixed breed (Lab coat, Golden heart) like Gunner? It only takes 10 minutes to clean off a body of burrs when a purebred GR would take 1 hour!!!

Gunner isn't at all bothered by burrs. Gunner ducked into the ravine for 30 seconds and came out of the ravine looking like a weed himself. He handled the quick brushing like a champ. FM was on a mission, as this happened just before leaving for work. He was burr free in 10 minutes! Try to match that with a purebred GR coat!!

We have done a few more “tests” for Gunner. We have had several get-togethers at our house with lots of people, kids running in and out, and food everywhere. Gunner handled it like a gentleman, well, almost. Gunner spent the meal going from guest to guest and then landed under the table. After the meal, I noticed that he had found something wonderful to roll in….before the guests arrived and I hadn’t noticed. I proceeded to take him outside and wash him off, which of course made it worse for a while. I apologized to my guests, including my mother-in-law who said, “I thought I smelled something while I was eating.” UGH! Gunner greeted each of the guests with his smile, though!

Test number two: outdoor cat. There is a neighbor cat that we see every day on our walk. Gunner has always been interested but never was challenged by the cat before. Well, this day the cat decided Gunner was on his turf. Gunner went into a stalking prey stance and I wondered what would happen next. The cat won. Only took a few moments for Gunner to decide it wasn’t worth it. So still not sure what he would do with a cat in the house. But we know that cats outside should be fine.

Test number three: babies. We had a visiting 9-month-old crawling around in our living room. Gunner was really only interested in the diaper and really indifferent to the baby. No problem there!

Test number four: water. We took Gunner to the river. The first time he was on a leash and he would retrieve a stick thrown in a short distance. The second time we went, the river was really low so it was safe to take off his leash. After cooling off a bit, he was ready to come out. In fact, instead of following our dog into the river, he would follow along the river bank, like he was saying, “Come back. That water is too deep!” So we don’t believe that Gunner desires lake life. However, I am quite sure that hanging out with you in the boat would make him very happy!

Things to consider with Gunner:

  • He insists on a daily morning walk and likes some type of activity in the evening (only has to be 5 ball tosses and pattering around the yard).
  • He loves people and would really prefer to have someone around most of the day, although not necessary. Must watch the counters, though, as when we have been all gone for a “long” period of time, there does happen to be some bread wrappers on the floor periodically. He may be a senior but can be quite nimble when he needs to be. He has never counter surfed when we are around.
  • Recommend that he be let out at midday.
  • Should be the only alpha dog in your house.
  • He will need thyoid medication, twice a day.
  • He gets a mild ear infection periodically but very easy to treat.
  • Gunner will want to sleep in your bedroom, won’t be content unless he does.
  • Loves balls and bones and treats.
  • He needs his cuddle time in the evening. He pesters until you sit by him or let him on the couch to cuddle.
  • He likes cushy furniture but will ask permission if you are sitting on it….most of the time!
  • LOVES PEOPLE and he smiles a lot. A little smile if hasn’t seen you for a half hour and full blown, wrinkle every muscle, gotta sneeze kind of smile, for longer separations!

And did I mention…….he has lost 25#?!!!!! He now weighs in at a trim 85#. OK, so maybe not exactly trim, but almost! Please contact us regarding Gunner! :p

Running like the wind!

On the hunt

Looking with concern at the resident dog swimming in the river, "You are too far out, come back here!"

"Got cooled off. I'm coming back!"

Gunner and Kobi chilling after a run around the yard.

"I am so happy to see you!!!" This is Gunner's BIG smile.

Gunner loves to play ball.

I'm happy as long as I have my
ball and my people!

I'm going to get that ball!

Gunner and resident GR having a great time with
I got the ball, I dare you to get it!

The melting snow is revealing a few treats which the dogs happily uncover and prance around with. The good news is that Gunner gives up his “treats” without a growl, although he does need some coaxing to drop them. But then again, so does the RD because these are such treasures!

Gunner definitely likes to go on longer walks however, he isn’t losing any weight. The lack of weight loss and a missing patch of fur on his butt earned him a trip to the vet to determine what was going on. The good news is that he doesn’t have a skin infection. Now we are waiting on the thyroid tests. Like most trips to the doctor a few extra things show up. We are also treating an ear infection but after a week his ear are looking good.

"What a great life.....daily walks and plenty of squirrels and rabbits to keep my nose busy."

My treasure

Is there a rabbit under here?

Life doesn't get any better than this!

When I hang out my tongue hangs out.

"Mom, I have never had the ground under water move before!"

This is Gunner's second time on the water treadmill.
The water will get higher each time he goes so that he learns to walk instead of swim.
Too bad FM doesn't have a treadmill to work out at the same time!

Day seven with Gunner and he is part of the family. Both Gunner and our resident GR are very content together. They have figured out how to share the bones, play with each other and even share their people! We leave them alone with free roam of the house without any issues. Gunner likes to get up on the furniture to be close to us, but only comes up if asked when we are around. He is a smart boy and could easily be trained that he is not allowed on the furniture.

Gunner’s body size would suggest that he begs for people food and snarfs his kibble and treats. However we have discovered quite the opposite. He is a gentle eater and may even walk away from his kibble before he is done. He really prefers for someone to be close by and even talk to him when he is eating. He learned within a couple days, that he must sit and shake for treats. We would make him lie down also but it is a bit hard until he gets some more weight off. While he likes to be in the kitchen with us, he does very little begging and is easily convinced to lie down.

Whoever is lucky enough to adopt Gunner, just needs to be consistent with his weight loss program. It consists of a high quality dog food, consistent walks and activity, and limited treats. He truly has the golden spirit and does very well with gentle persuasion. Take a look at this very calm boy with the gentle spirit.

Good news from the Vet! All of his tests came back normal and he has no signs of hip or knee problems. Gunner is a healthy 9 yr old that just needs to stop eating so much.

He is treat motivated but doesn't scarf his food like I would expect from such a large dog. He is quite gentle when taking treats.

Gunner is a gentle dog who knows how to sit nicely but has trouble staying in one place, has good recall and we have been working with the gentle leader so he does not pull when leashed. Gunner would benefit from obedience classes which would also help with socialization.

Gunner is getting better with my senior girl but still stalks her when we are outside. They will sleep a few feet from each other when in the house with no issues. Gunner has this loud moan when he stretches or changes positions which is funny to listen to and has startled me a few times. I laugh at him when he moans and he looks at me like I'm crazy. Gunner is very calm and quiet in the house if you don't count his snoring,

I will be testing Gunner with another dog to see if he would prefer to be an only dog or just needs a few days to get used to being with a new dog. I was told he lived with a smaller dog for 2 weeks and did fine but I do not know if he was with other dogs or an only dog for his first 9 years.

Even with his weight Gunner has energy to burn and would make a great walking partner. Please contact placement if these eyes have caught your heart.
