Jake 06-019

Profile

1/30/06: Jake and Haley arrived last night and spent about an hour exploring their new yard and greeting their new friend Babe, the Chocolate Lab. They wore themselves out running up and down the fence line barking at each other.

Haley and Jake are siblings, 6 years old. Haley is a beautiful blonde and Jake is a very handsome red. They are very attached to each other, have always been together, and should remain together.

Haley is kind of put out that the cats get to sleep in the bedroom, but we had a talk and she begrudgingly slept in the dining room with Jake last night. I brought Haley into the bedroom today to meet one of the cats and he just sniffed and wanted to get on the bed with her. He wasn't aggressive at all but with one sniff my cat quickly hid under the bed. I'll try Jake and the cats tomorrow.

Haley is the talker and has an opinion on everything. Jake is more laid back and seems to follow Haley's lead. Jake does love his stuffed toys. He walks around the house carrying them while talking/growling and wagging his tail. They are both little wiggle butts.

They are both well behaved and in true Golden fashion, love attention and follow me everywhere. I think they received a little too much attention today (we were out playing in the snow and shoveling the driveway) and they are both out cold laying next to me.

Jake and Haley are on seizure medication and allergy medicine twice a day and take these pills like troopers. It is so easy to give them their pills. Neither Jake nor Haley can be crated. This creates stress on them and will cause a seizure. But with these two, no crate is necessary. They know their boundaries with a baby gate and are not destructive at all.

Jake and Haley were very loved by their owners, which is evident by all the information, supplies, food and toys that came with them. Both are trained to lay on the floor and put their paws up so their paws can be wiped off. They know many commands and walk easily on a leash. No Gentle Leader is necessary, as they are trained to heel.

These two are very special and would like a home that will continue to show them how special they are. They will give you unconditional love and lots of Golden kisses.

Jake went to Rainbow Bridge on July 6, 2013. He would have been 14 in October, outliving any of our other goldens by a couple of years. He had a good, long life. He lost the use of his back legs, but never his sense of humor!

He was active right until the end. His back left leg started giving him grief over the last year, or so, but he learned to get around, even a funny little jog, when he was playing with other dogs. He needed some help with stairs and steep hills, but didn't let it bother him. He lived for his walks, maybe as much because he knew he'd get a treat when he got back to the house, as seeing his friends (in our winter-home neighborhood) or grazing on the tasty grass here in the woods in northern Minnesota. He was still good for a mile, or 2, a day, happy to be out with his pals.

He lived for food and treats, too. He loved fruits and vegetables. Anything that he could eat, he did eat. One of his last snacks was a package of cherry tomatoes that were supposed to be for shish-ka-bobs :). His last night, he couldn't really stand on his own, but still scammed us for treats by barking to go out and with our help out the door, would just go out and make a circle to come back in, so he could have his treat. He did that a half a dozen times. He happily got in the car for his last ride, doing his best to get in (he's needed help with that for a while, too, but gave it his best to help).

There is a big empty spot in our home, and lives, where Jake was. We know that will get better, as time goes on, but will always be there. He's got a bunch of friends waiting for him, at Rainbow Bridge, so we know he's OK. We will miss him, dearly.

His loving parents,

Scott + Elayne

The perfect day - a walk in the park, a game of tug o war with Haley and my peanut butter Kong.

Thursday, March 23, 2006

Jake and Haley had their first meeting of the minds with my cats this week. Those two large noses have no manners and put them where they don't belong. My cats graciously put Jake and Haley in their place with a few swats on the snout. As you can see in the picture, Jake and Haley think there are more cats under the bed. My two cats are on top of the bed watching their antics. It is so funny to watch these two stick their heads under the bed with their butts in the air moving from one end of the bed to another.

Jake and my cat Rocket had a stare down. Jake had his face inches from Rocket's face and they were just staring at each other, neither of them moving. My other cat had a race with Jake to see who could get to the bed first. She just doesn't understand that running is a game for Jake. It's a good thing that she was fast. Jake and Haley behaved fairly well during their first encounter with cats.

It turns out that Jake has a penchant to eat paper. He is not particular - any old newspaper, paper towel, electric bill or phone bill will do. Haley just watches and will try to divert attention from Jake's mischief when he gets caught. She is a truly great sister. All is forgotten when Jake and Haley lay down next to me and put their heads on my lap.

Jake and Haley wanted me to thank everyone that came to Petco to meet them. They enjoyed meeting everyone and were very impressed by how well behaved the humans were.

Jake and Haley continue to amaze me with their manners but also with their antics. One moment they are teasing each other or pushing each other out of the way vying for attention and then the next moment are licking each other. They are both talkers and have so much to say.

Haley has a bell that is hung on the door knob which she rings when she wants to go outside. It took her a couple weeks to start using the bell at my house but now uses it when she wants to be outside and of course Jake is right there to go out with her.

Jake and Haley are very interested in the older neighborhood kids when they come home from school. They will run to the fence line to watch them walk down the street. The snow is too high for the kids to come up to the fence, but I'm sure Jake and Haley would love them to come and play. They do not have much interest in the 3 year old next door. She's ok to go say hi to, but that's about as much time as they have for her. We've been walking the neighborhood and they walk very nicely together. They like to check out new places and smells.

These two would put a smile on Scrooge's face. I come home and they are happy to see me, but then Haley starts talking and telling me about her day and they get more excited and more excited and then Jake will pick up his stuffed squirrel and start prancing around growling and talking and showing off his prize and then they both try to outdo the other and I can't help but laugh at them.

Jake just grunted at me when I read my update to them. Oh I'm sorry, I'm laughing WITH them, not at them!!

Jake and Haley are the epitome of politeness and manners. They are bursting at the seams to find a family to shower with love. If you are looking for well mannered dogs and love Golden kisses, these two are perfect for you. They live to please and their hearts would break if they thought you were angry at them. The medication they are on is not expensive and they take their pills so eagerly.

I sat on the floor cuddling with them on Super Bowl Sunday because they didn't understand the loud noises. Loud noises and loud people make them nervous. They love to go for walks and investigate the neighborhood, love to play fetch (Haley will try to get all the attention and will push Jake away from the ball), love tug o war with each other, but are just as happy sitting quietly with you.

You will not find two easier dogs to live with and love. Once you meet Jake and Haley and look in their eyes, you will fall madly in love with them.

Jake and Haley have been with me a week and are such easy fosters. They fit right into the routine (my cats would argue about our routine) and are the sweetest and most gentle souls. Jake is so handsome walking around with his stuffed animals in his mouth, growling and acting tough while wagging his tail. Haley is a true lady. She is so sweet but Jake gets on her nerves once in a while and she has to remind him that she's the boss. She does this in such a gentle yet stern way. They love to play in the snow and fetch their stuffed rabbit and tennis ball. I think they would fetch forever if I let them.

Jake and Haley are 70 lbs. of wiggle butt so a family without small children would be best. Jake also likes to play bite on your sleeve but will stop when told. He just gets very excited when he first gets out to play. It is such a joy to come home and have Jake and Haley greet you. They are all smiles and talk forever about their day. They are definite people dogs and are happy just to be near you.

Due to their seizure medication, Jake and Haley drink a lot of water but they have never had an accident in the house. They have free run of the house when I'm gone and have never done anything inappropriate. I have a baby gate up to keep them away from the cats and they have never tried to go over the gate. They cry at the gate and want to get at the cats but have made no physical move to get at them.

Jake and Haley would like a family that has time to spend with them and would show them how special they are. These two will light up your world.
