Please welcome Jake to the RAGOM family!

He arrived safely at my home last night and is settling in nicely. He is 8 year old, 50 lbs and is a Golden Lab mix. The first 8 years of his life stunk. He was chained up outside all the time. As a result, he literally grew into his chain/collar.

Yes, it had to be surgically removed from his neck L A wonderful Good Samaritan rescued him and gave him to a rescue organization called Dogs Deserve Better. Their mission is to rescue dogs that are forever chained up outside. They paid for his large vet bill and contacted RAGOM for a foster home. Jake will always be forever grateful to his Good Samaritan, Dogs Deserve Better and RAGOM for giving him a second chance at a great life!

His neck wound is healing up nicely. He has stitches all the way around his neck, which will come out later this week. It kind of looks like he had a head transplant! He is getting along good with my two resident dogs. He’s currently tethered to me at all times---he is not potty trained, so this will hopefully quicken up the training process. We also use a leash outside to go potty. He does not have good recall yet, so will not come when called. We’ll be working on that. More to come as I get to know him.

Dear Ragom,

I adopted Jake this past March and I could not have been luckier to get such a wonderful dog.

He has settled in at the house like he had been living here his whole life. Though he has had a sad past we are working on that every day and every day he is making huge steps. Also every day his personality is coming out. My girlfriend says that Jake and I are exactly alike. He may have been afraid of me the first week or so he was here but now he is right at home and so very comfortable. He has been an absolute joy to have around, so very well behaved.

We had a funny thing happen about two weeks back. I went outside to my car to get a CD and did not notice that the screen door did not shut all of the way. When I turned around Jake was standing there watching me with a big smile on his face. So I tested it a little and he never once left my side. Right now he is laying at my feet while I type with his head on my feet. I know he has had a hard life up until about a year back when RAGOM welcomed him into their pack and I would like to thank his foster mom for doing an absolutely fabulous job with this angel of a boy. And I would also like to thank the other RAGOM volunteers who have helped me with my many a question since I adopted Jake. Here are some pics of Jake at home.

Thank you again my life has changed so much for the better I couldn't imagine life with out this wonderful dog at my side.

Jake is still doing very well. He’s been busy these last 2 weekends. Last week he went to Annie’s party and met lots of people and even gave Annie a kiss. Yesterday we went to the Petsmart in Roseville. The layout was wonderful---one of the best places I think RAGOM has had an event. The employees were very helpful and we never felt like we were in the way. If you live in that area, I would highly recommend their store---very clean, bright and big.

Jake enjoyed meeting all the people. As usual, the first 15 minutes or so he was very shy, hiding behind my legs. But, then he becomes comfortable and enjoys meeting everybody. He was even comfortable enough to lay down for belly rubs. He met a very special couple that we are praying puts in an application to adopt him. They have adopted from RAGOM before and are very interested in Jake. Jake would be an only dog and get lots of attention and snuggle time. The only thing is they have cats and he has not been cat-tested yet. So, my job in the next week or so is to get him cat-tested. It would be a good thing to find out, so I’ll fill you in when I know the results.

At the Annie event, he met the nice lady that made all of Annie’s coats. Guess what?? She made Jake a coat too!!! Here are some pictures of him with his handsome new coat on!
