Kate-Ellie now known as Katie, 5 year old pure breed female Golden, 79 lbs, Very dark red thick curly coat. Katie is estimated to have had pups approx 9 weeks ago and has a appt to be spayed the 1st week of Nov. so will not be able to go to her forever home till after that time but you sure can meet her before that. She was found in a drop box at a impound. So much remains unknown much about her past. Was seen by a vet and she has a very severe "hot spot"  (common staph infection of the skin) on her left cheek and severe ear infection in both ears, Her coat was dry and dirty and needed attention, with a good bath and brushing, and good nutrition and omega oils now her coat is already shining and getting softer. As of now she is on oral antibiotics, oral antifungal and antibiotic ear drops and also a soft cone (E collar) so she does not scratch open Left ear or cheek. The first round of the medications have worked somewhat, but still have a little more healing to do.

When she came to us, she was very stressed, unknown of any of her history, we let her investigate a bit on her own terms, she is somewhat shy and cautious of the other dogs, humans, stairways, doorways. She is very submissive and will keep her tail between her legs and head down, the good thing is she has found a safe spot in the corner in my bedroom, so when things get more then she can handle, she goes in there but she is also very curious and when she hears bags rustling or doors opening or other dogs barking she comes out to see what’s up.   We do not kennel her, she has not destroyed anything. She has had a couple urine accidents in the house the first couple days she was here, but none since, she paces by the back door when needing out.

She seems to ignore my other Goldens, whether my 1.5 year old or 10 and 13 year old, she does not play with them and appears she knows nothing of toys, balls or ropes a matter of a fact, she was very startled with the toy that makes a squeak. She is interested in hooves and antlers and she will hand them to you like a sweet gesture to share. However when at the vet, she was very interested in the small dogs, her eyes lit up and she wanted to meet them, maybe she thought it was one of her puppies. She ignores my cat. She seems only to be interested in what us humans are doing, she is quite a velcro dog, you can barely walk without her stuck to you leg and your hands have no business doing anything but petting her and she will nudge endlessly till you give in. She has no recall and has no training background, she is very food motivated and we are working on sit for food because she gets very jumpy and barky at meal time. She does not pull on a leash, But if startled I am sure she will bolt, so don’t get too relaxed, If she gets scared like that, I hold her head very close and hold her till she calms down. She was pretty nervous with the thunder the other day, she stayed close to me and she was OK. When give her pills wrap the pills in wet food and she slurps it right down. When I need to put topical medicine on her face or in her ears, she doesn't like it but tolerates and forgives quickly. She has dreamy eyes and when she looks at you, you melt to her, she is so innocent and loving and we are now working on trust, So no real formal training yet, When she comes to us, we pet and scratch her really good and tell her how nice and pretty she is and things will be just fine. She loves Dick Van Patten Natural Balance moist food roll, I cut it in squares and it gets her attention very quickly. She rides Ok in the car, she is more comfortable in the front seat with me. She reminds me more of a senior dog personality, she is not active or playful but very affectionate and appreciative. She is very scared of little kids and she hides her face into her safe spot. Older kids she does fine.

Ms Katie is doing very well slowly adjusting to our busy house, I even caught her playing with my 2 year old golden Riley in the back yard and tails been wagging much more lately. She is getting a bit bolder and barking to get attention and at the front door when any cars pull in. When the temps not in the -0's she loves walking the trails and got very excited when a bunny ran by, We have not got very far with formal training, Her routine is she's soooooo! excited when there is food or treat, she barks in a deep voice in a almost panic and you have to snuggle her to calm down, she has 'sit' down pat cause no food comes until she does, So she sits right away and starts barking. She has little to no recall so she is always on a long lead if not fenced and she will go home with any person who is willing to be kind to her.  She is so innocent and loving, I think she needs a very paitent forever family and not to expect too much training too quickly, in so to keep her safe. Oh, and she watches Animal Planet on TV, expecially the show "So Cute" Her head turns all over in amazment.

On Nov 15, went in for Katie's follow up, staples removed, incision looks great. Ears are very much improving, outer ears are very sparkling, inner ear needs a bit more effort with the antibiotic irrigations for 10 more days, Her Left cheek is healing nicely, Left eyelid is hairless and irritated, appears to be allergy related. We will now have her on benedryl 2 times a day while symptoms persists. I think she needs a break from medications for awhile and see what her now healthier body can do for itself. Since she has been in my home she is eating California Natural Lamb and rice, sprinkled with Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance moist and daily supplement called The Missing Link, All this takes time, I am so excited to see her coat shiny and soft fur coming in as we brush away the course rough stuff. She is enjoying her daily walks and so wonderful on a leash. She is REALLY adjusting quickly to our home life, she has been becoming very friendly and visits the grand kids now due to they drop food frequently from the table, she plays gently with the mischievous visiting kitten at our house. She is napping during the day and eve in the main living area with us, instead of the safe corner. If your looking for a mellow, loyal, sweet, loving, easy going girl, no fuss,no muss that you can take short strolls with no pulling down the street kind of dog, She is your Girl.

On Nov 1 had her Spay surgery and had a difficult time stopping the bleeding, the situation was hairy carry for a short time also while she was under anesthesia they thoroughly cleaned her ears, which had more hardened wax then anything this vet has ever seen. Well she finally was out of the red zone and red blood cells were catching up, Poor baby had to wear a very tight belly band around her incision site for 3 days and under strict bed rest. Able to take off the band and dressing today, she has 3 layers of sutures and one layer of staples, but looked really good and clean. She is quite a licker and picker, so large cone went on.

Now cone on only at night or when we are not home, I covered the incision with a breathable medipore tape spayed with bitter apple spray, seems to work pretty good. She is now on antibiotics again and will need to be seen in 2 weeks Fri the 15th for staple and suture removal. Today Nov 5, she is more like herself, she is eating and drinking well. and back to wanting hugs and scratches all over.

Ms Katie is opening up a little more and meeting me at the door when I come in, tails a waggin'. She will nudge me when she has to go outside and she is doing a lot better with dinner manners "her food and ours", Now, she waits till we are done eating and she knows she will get a nibble or lick and no more barking at food prep time or pressing her face to our plates at the table. she waits patiently till she receives her food.  She appears more lovey dovey with men, she adores my husband and our next door neighbor, she runs right up to guys tail wagging without a second thought.

Took her to the Dog park and she was kind of lost as to what to do, But AGAIN! she followed the small dogs all over, she sure seems relaxed and at home with a small dog around. She followed foster sister Honey(Jenni) 01-240 into the lake and she seemed as though she liked it, kept bobbing her nose into the water and experimented with how far she could go, she stayed in the shallow area.  I could tell she is opening up to new ideas and its getting a little bit easier for her to explore the world around her.

                                                                                          LOOK! Tail up high!

Now she is looking at my cat more attentively and tries to stay away from him, not really scared, just not sure.

She is almost done with her medications and her left cheek appears to be getting much better until this morning, she found a way around her Cone to itch the area, she pushed her face into the carpet and rubbed and the area opened up again, What a stinker!  Went to the vet today and with a month of antibiotic, anti fungal treatment with some improvement under her belt, She is still itchy, So now have a steroid (Prednisone)on board, with another 14 days of antibiotic, we also have to continue the ear drops Ugh!!

Curious??? who's that in the other car???  Katie looking out the back window

We will be at Chuck and Dons in Shakopee Sat Oct 19th from 12noon to 2pm if you would like to meet this doll.
