Happy Spring!  Happy Spring, Lady! From Connie Olson

In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:
Date Available Fence Kid Friendly Another Dog Cat Friendly
2/8/2017  Required  Age 10+  Required  Dog savvy cat
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Lady is a six-year-old Irish Setter. She was purchased from a breeder one year ago.  She has been great with the three resident males (two Golden Retrievers and one Red Lab) and will chase the cats if they taunt her.  She is housebroken and has had no accidents. She has been given free roam of part of the house with one of the males when left alone and all has been well.  She was surrendered to RAGOM because her SO is elderly and will be moving from her home to a small condo due to mobility issues.

Lady was very scared as she arrived at her foster home late Sunday afternoon, but she recovered quickly once she met the other dogs. She even ate dinner that first evening (and has not missed a meal since). So far, she is still dragging a longline when she's outside because she isn't always willing to come into the house when it's time to go in. She also startles when there's a loud noise, and since we live in an urban area of St. Paul, that is something that happens fairly often.

She started approaching me for pets (when I'm petting another dog) on Monday evening....which is amazingly fast for a dog from a breeder. She is obviously more social than most dogs we get from breeders, but she still has a lot of the characteristics....so she will require a real fence, at least one large, normal dog, and no young kids in her permanent home.

We go to the vet next week so we'll know more at that time. Please check back regularly for more updates.

Lady is still chillin' in St. Paul. She loves her foster brothers! She also loves squirrels! She can get a little crazy when she sees one! It does make walks through our neighborhood a bit interesting when she sees a squirrel... and she can spot them from a long way away. Not much new to say about her at this point other than she is now up to date on shots.

I've added some new photos which either show her with her foster brothers or after a squirrel....her two passions in life.

Another week in foster care. Lady is settled in and continues to do well. She goes to the vet this afternoon for a couple of shots and a heartworm test. She has taken to hogging toys and piling them in her favorite spot on the couch. The resident dogs don't really bother her stash and she doesn't mind when we clean and put all the toys back in the toy box. Her favorite toys are the big stuffy kind. She has taken to pouncing on the cats but since they don't avoid her, I'm not really sure it's an issue. She also loves to chase birds in the yard, the resident dogs don't get it and look at her like she's nuts.

We met a lady at the event last week who said Lady was a field setter. She was meant to hunt. It certainly fits her behavior and makes sense to me. Lady enjoyed the event and she continues to be very social for a girl from breeder. The only issue was when she realized she was leaving the house without another dog, she panicked for a second, but she did allow me to leash her and she ended up jumping into the back of the car. She was exhausted once we got home and slept hard for a couple of hours.

She's begging..."

It's snowing in St. Paul at the end of April.
That's not why Lady and Finn want to go in,
they know breakfast is next."

Lady is still hanging out in her foster home. She sure loves her foster brothers. She is very social as long as her foster brothers show her it's okay. One nice thing about her....she never potties on a walk. She always waits until she's home in the fenced yard and the leash is off.....yet another similarity most dogs from breeding situations seem to have.

Nothing much new in Lady's life this week. No visiting dogs, so she just has the resident boys to contend with. We tore up some carpeting and she's adjusted nicely to the hardwood floors. She also handled being gated in another room away from the action the day the carpets came up....of course she was with her buddies so I didn't expect anything else. More later...so keep checking on Lady.

Lady wants the couch but it's occupied.
She's hoping that someone will move if she keeps staring.

Lady is squirrel obsessed! There is a squirrel on the wires two houses away--and she spots it.

Lady continues to do well in foster care. She loves it at our house but it would be great if she could get adopted fairly soon. She's good with all the dogs she's met (not a surprise considering she's from a breeder), she gets along with the two resident cats and so far the parakeets have survived her stay too. She'd be fun to train and she's very social for a breeder dog. I'm even thinking she'd be a good therapy dog as long as other dogs were visiting too.

The image of the week is of Lady and Annabelle playing. Sorry it's so dark....but we didn't have many lights on.

Lady has had another uneventful week. We have been dog-sitting so she's had lots of canine companionship. She ignores them, but she watches them. I think she and the resident blond boy have a little something going but it's mostly just a sharing of the toys thing. It seems whenever he has something, she wants it, and visa versa. After Friday night, it will just be the resident boys and Lady for most of April.

We are working on basic commands but so far she thinks the other dogs might need to sit, or down, or stay, but that it doesn't really apply to her....so we haven't made a ton of progress. She is perfectly housebroken and has not had a single issue inside the house since she arrived. We walk most nights and she has a tremendous desire to catch the squirrels she sees. She is very strong and can be very stubborn. Her walking companion Finnegan, likes the squirrels too but he listens better than she does, which makes it possible to walk the two of them together.

In case it's been a while since I've stated them, Lady will require a real fence, another large, normal dog (or more) and no small children in her forever home. She also needs a home that will allow dogs on the furniture since that does not seem to be negotiable as far she's concerned. Let Ragom know if you'd like more info on Lady. More later, check back soon.

Not much is new in Lady's world this past week. We are dog sitting so she has plenty of canine company and she continues to thrive. She is so normal, I forget she's from a breeder. She's super social when anyone comes to our house and has no problem being just as pushy for petting as her resident foster brothers. She begs for human food and she's tall enough so she can put her head right on the table. She prefers the furniture to the floor and she especially likes our couch. She takes treats directly from my hand but she needs to be reminded to be gentle. She loves the dog toys but leaves everything else alone. She also loves to go on walks and she walks great! She is squirrel-crazy and requires a little redirection when we seem them. We are working on some training and she's not quick to "sit" or "down" but she has a fair recall when we are outside in our fenced yard. "Stay" remains a foreign concept to her but since nobody has even asked about her, we have more time to work on things. Check back regularly for more on Lady.

Lady had a toy that Murray sort of wants...

Peace...or typical Minnesota passive-aggressive? You decide.

I'm very surprised that we still have Lady. She is so normal that anyone looking for a second (or third) dog should have snapped her up by now.  She went to the RAGOM meet and greet last weekend and did great. She was even bold enough to shoplift a snack from one of the shelves. Don't let the fact that she's an Irish Setter hold you back, she's a very nice Irish Setter. Maybe I'm used to the setters I see at agility, but she's not like that at all. She had no fears and did great with all the people (men, women, children) and of course dogs she met at the event. She even met a giant rabbit that was on display in a cage in the back of the store. In the meantime, she's content at our house.....but don't hesitate to contact RAGOM if you might be interested.

Life in foster care has been a bit boring for Lady. She is getting regular 2 mile walks, always with her pal Finnegan. She walks nicely. She is however SUPER interested in squirrels we see. She also likes to chase birds in the yard. She can be hard to manage when she sees a squirrel while on a walk. If I owned her, I'd get her into obedience training right away.

She has stayed home alone (always with other dogs) for a couple of full work days. Those days aren't frequent, but they do occur. She was fine.

The other night she woke us up with ferocious barking. She wouldn't settle down and every minute or so would start up again. I finally decided it wasn't just a loud neighbor so I got up and started listening. I finally realized she was reacting to a chirp from somewhere in the house.....a dying smoke detector backup battery in the basement was the culprit. After several minutes of standing around waiting for another chirp, the correct smoke detector was found and the battery was changed....good thing we had a spare 9v battery in a drawer. The three residents plus a visiting RAGOM alum slept through the whole thing. Obviously the chirp didn't bother any of them.

She's planning on attending the event in Shakopee on Saturday . It will be good to see how she acts with all the other dogs and people around. We'll update later, so check back frequently.

I am thinking Lady is wishing she'd get rescued from her foster home. Lately we have been dog-sitting, so there have been lots of extra dogs around in addition to the three boys she already lives with. That will be ending soon and by  Friday  we'll be down to just the resident animals. It will be quiet!

She has been walking a couple of miles almost everyday with her friend Finnegan. They walk well together and she seems to enjoy it. She walks quite nicely. She waits to do her business until we get back to the yard, but then so does her friend Finn. That is a trait we have noticed with most dogs from commercial breeding situations .... hence the frequent requirement that these dogs have a real fence. Finn is not from a commercial breeder, he just usually likes to wait until after his walk to potty. However I'm pretty sure the first time I forget to bring bags, they will both decide to potty before we get home.

I took Lady to Petco last weekend to get her nails trimmed. She has been so confident at home that I decided to just take her. We got to the glass door and Lady decided she needed to pancake herself to the sidewalk. She was not going through those doors. We waited a little bit until another big dog came by and she gladly followed him into the store. That was a pretty stark reminder to me that these dogs from breeders really need another large, normal dog to use as a role model in their homes, both foster and forever. Once we were in the store, there were lots of dogs around, so she was fine.

At home she loves to empty the toy box regularly. She takes every single toy out and spreads them all around the area. She likes to play with the toys but there is no guarding or anything like that going on. She also likes to watch the parakeets....for hours and hours. They scream and challenge her and she is very interested....but they are safely in their heavy duty Foster's and Smith cage.

She sits funny and it's been hard to capture the image as she sits...she's very camera shy. She's been checked out by her surrendering owner's vet and by the RAGOM vet as well and all is well.

If you have a fenced yard and another large normal dog, she'd be a great addition to your home. She is the most normal dog I've fostered from a breeder. She is also very calm for an Irish Setter, at least the ones I know from agility. She's a keeper....so contact RAGOM if you'd like to meet Lady.

Lady is doing fine in foster care. She is very normal for a girl from a breeder. She has mastered the back door and no longer trails a leash when she goes outside. She loves the big dogs at our house....right now three goldens and a lab....she is very relaxed and at home with all the boys.

She's been on a few two-mile walks, always with another dog, and she walks great! She does want to chase the squirrels but not in a wild or crazy way. She hasn't reacted to any of the people we see or the noises we hear. She walks beautifully and has a nice pace and stride.

She's not a fan of the camera so photos aren't the best....
