Meet Mary Sue.  Mary Sue is a pretty Golden Retriever mix who is about a year and a half old.  Mary Sue was found as a stray in Kentucky and brought to a shelter that contacted RAGOM.  While transportation was being arranged to bring Mary Sue up to Minnesota she started gaining weight.  The foster family that she was with thought that it was just because she was eating well, but then it turned out she was pregnant.  She gave birth to 9 happy and healthy puppies on May 19, 2013 and was brought into RAGOM with them (Wren 13-149, Nutmeg 13-150, Dozer 13-151, Gia 13-152, Cinnamon 13-153, Drake 13-154, Ace 13-155, Bella 13-156, Romeo 13-157).

Mary Sue came to our house and settled right in.  She met the resident dog, Sammy, with no problems and has ignored our cats.  She lived with several small children in her first foster home in Kentucky and has meet many other children who have come to play with the puppies and she loves them all.  She just loves people period.  Mary Sue also has a playful side and has enjoyed running around the yard with our almost resident dog, Lucy, chasing squirrels or playing tag. 

Her puppies are currently 5 weeks old and will need to stay with her for a while longer, but she is starting to look for her forever home.  As we get to know this sweet girl better we will post more.

This is Mary Sue’s former foster mom.  Her puppies turned 2 years old on May 19th and I have been sending in Happy Endings updates on all of them and wanted to make sure I send in a recent picture of Mary Sue too.

We have had a wonderful time seeing Mary Sue at Goldzilla the last two years.  I cannot believe how beautiful she has become.  When she was with us she looked like a pretty fox but has grown into a real beauty.  Her coat has filled out and is incredibly silky (you can see from the picture how thick and full it is).  I am amazed at how so many of her puppies look like her while still looking so different from one another (I think Cinnamon looks the most like her with the white chest and white foot).  From speaking with her family at Goldzilla I can tell that Mary Sue landed wonderfully and is very loved.  She still loves her golden RAGOM brother and has been attending obedience training.  It sounds like she still loves to chase squirrels but her family keeps her safe.

Mary Sue and her puppies will probably be our most memorable fosters (especially since we still have Cinnamon to remind us every day).  Watching her grow into a trusting and beautiful dog and watching her babies grow up has been wonderful.  It makes me so happy to see how happy she is now.  I look forward to seeing her again this year at Goldzilla.

Mary Sue has been great to have around. She is a true people pleasing dog. She is always happy to see you and wags her tail hard enough that she does a full body wag. Mary Sue has been in our house a little over a week now and her sweet disposition is really coming out. She has a lot of spunk, and when she is done nursing her babies and gains the weight she so desperately needs, I imagine that she will have a fair amount of energy. She is only a year and a half after all. When our almost resident dog, Lucy, comes over, the two of them will run around the backyard at full speed. It is great to see her having so much fun.

She does seem to have a strong prey drive. So far, she has just run up to the fence running after squirrels or birds, but we know she can climb fences per her foster home in Kentucky before she was brought here. Mary Sue will also jump baby gates easily – they don’t slow her down at all. We keep her on a leash at night out in the backyard and under constant supervision when outside during the day. Since she was found as a stray, we take extra precaution in case she ran away from her original home chasing something. We will call her housebroken as we haven’t had any accidents in the house and she will whine when she needs to go outside.

While she seems housebroken, she doesn’t know any other commands, including sit. She is so eager to please and get praised and is super food motivated, so I don’t see training being a problem for her. Mary Sue responds well to her name but won’t necessarily come if she has a critter in her sight. Since she doesn’t even know the basic commands, she will need some obedience training. It will be a good bonding experience between her and her new family too. She has been bounced around a lot in the past couple of months and structure will be good for her.

Even though she will jump baby gates, she doesn’t seem to have any issues other than counter surfing. We have given her free roam from day one. She has sniffed our cats, but ignored them otherwise, and she hasn’t picked up anything inappropriate from the floor. I have caught her with her paws on the bread board and counter several times now, sniffing out some goodies. We just have to make sure that everything is really far back or put away. Mary Sue is a great dog and is so sweet. She will fit into almost any family as she loves dogs, cats, and kids. She will need some training and a fence, but I think she will be easy to train.
