Neal 08-534

Profile

Neil was recently welcomed back to Ragom.  He is a beautiful four year old male lighter colored PB Golden.  He is all up to date on his vaccinations and was HW negative.  Neil is a big Golden, 86 lbs but the vet said he is at a very good weight and looked to be in great shape.  He has had free roam of my house for a week now and has been perfect.  When he needs to go outside he will stand by the door.  He does stand by the door a lot because he really likes running around in the snow.

He always wants to be in the same room as his FD and loves to be petted or just be close to people.  When he really likes something he even makes a funny noise in his throat like he is trying to purr.  He does like playing with dog toys and will spend plenty of time chewing on them, but never on anything else.  Neil does get excited when people come over and is a little jumpy at first.  With his size he could knock someone over easily.  If you just say no when he is getting ready to do this he stops.  He has almost stopped this behavior after only a week.

He is getting along good with the two resident two year old Golden’s. Neil was surrendered back to Ragom after an incident where he bit a neighbors small dog.   He ran through a invisible fence to get to the dog, so he will need a house with a physical fence and should not be around small dogs unsupervised.

He does enjoy looking for the rabbits under the neighbors trees.   He will stand at the fence in the cold and just keep staring at where he has seen rabbits.    I have a four foot fence and always keep an eye on him because am afraid he might be able to jump it.    So far he just puts his big paws on top of it.  He does bark occasionally, but only when he sees a rabbit or one of neighbors dogs out.   Then still not excessively.

Neil also loves  going on walks, he can pull some while on the leash but is getting better at walking without pulling every day.    When passing other dogs on walks his behavior has been perfect.

Neal came to live with us in February 2010 and quickly stole our hearts.  He was very vocal, always had a story to tell and snored louder than most humans we know.  He loved long walks in the woods with Curt and sharing lettuce with Lisa (he knew the sound of the lettuce bag and would be right next to me looking for the crunchy pieces).   He came to us totally trained as a bird dog, which made Curt cry happy tears when Neal brought back the first grouse in October 2010, he loved grouse hunting with his human dad (Curt)., but hated the canoe.

He just wanted to make us happy and was always a happy dog.  Neal crossed the rainbow bridge on October 26, 2017. We loved him so much and miss him dearly, he is always in our hearts.

Hey everyone Neal here. I thought I would try my paw at writing my own update. Foster Dad is good and all but he cannot believe that I am still not in my forever home. I am quite handsome he says and so do a lot of others that meet me at the Ragom events. I like hanging out with my foster brothers here and while it is nice to live in a house full of guys (Foster Dad and 2 resident canines) I would be ok with a girl or 2 in my life. I have not had any problems with any dogs so I guess it will always remain a mystery why that previous neighbor’s dog and I got into a tangle. I cannot live with a cat and from the picture attached you will see I probably should not live in a house with hamsters or any other rodents. They were at the Petco event and how fascinating to watch them.  Just a fish tank separated us. Good thing I think.  J

I’m doing very well with the gentle leader and really need to attend some obedience classes. Not only would it be good bonding for us, but we could spend some time together. I love humans and can never get enough of them. Fetch is a favorite game of mine and I am very good at dropping the ball. Snow and fun in the yard? I love it!

If you think you might be the forever home for me please let your placement advisor know. I sparked a little interest at the last couple events so I might not be around long. After you see these new pictures of me, you’ll agree.

Stay tuned
Neal

Neal had another great day at the Ragom event in Roseville this past weekend.  He was in heaven with all the people there wanting to meet him and getting so much attention.  There is not much that Neal likes better than being around people and meeting other dogs.    At these events Neal has met a number of small children and he has always been very comfortable and gentle around them.    For being such a big dog, I have only seen him be gentle.    He has not jumped up on anyone in a few weeks now.

He is a big people pleaser and always wants to be close to you.    He will follow me from room to room as I walk around the house.    He does have free roam of the house and one of the few times he has barked in the house was when I lost track of how long it had been since he had been out.  He knew he needed to go out, so he stood by the door and barked once to remind me.    He has not had any issues and has been left home with his foster brothers for up to nine hours.  This week his two foster brothers had to get a checkup at the vet and Neal behaved perfectly when left home alone for a couple of hours.

He did have an incident in the past with a small dog, but I have seen him meet a few dozen dogs and there have been no problems. I guess we will never know what he did not like in that dog.   Whenever he is around dogs of all sizes, his tail is always wagging.

He has also been having a great time outside playing in all of this snow.    It’s like a whole new world to him when we get a new snowfall. He does great outside in the yard and his recall (in a fenced yard) is wonderful.   He also loves playing fetch in the back yard and is very good at returning the ball even if his foster brothers are constantly trying to take it away from him.

Neal is ready for his forever home. He would make a great addition to your home and can live with or without another dog.  I cannot believe that he has had no one snap him up yet. If interested, please let your placement advisor know.

On Saturday Neal got a bath to get ready for the event in Richfield.  He seemed to like it, I know he liked the treats he got will getting the bath.  He must have wanted to look his best before meeting all of the people at the event in Richfield.  He had a great time at the event and loved all of the attention he got.   He has now meet over a dozen different dogs and has been very calm around all of them.    Even if sometimes the other dog is not always calm.

He is still doing perfect around the house.  He has not jumped up on anyone in a couple of weeks now and has been perfect with free roam of the house.  He is left with his two foster brothers for up to nine hours and has never chewed on anything that was not a dog toy or had an accident in the house, even when I frequently leave shoes out.

Neal has also been doing very well when he is outside.  He loves to run around in the yard with his brothers and play fetch.  He does always return when I call him and does know basic commands.

Neil will be at the event in Roseville on Saturday from Noon to 1:30.

Neal has been perfect around the house this last week.   He has had free roam of the house while I am at work and has not had a single issue in the three weeks he has been here.  He has settled in here nicely.

He even likes to be outside in this cold weather.  He just does not to spend as much time out there when out.  He has been listening to me perfectly.  When I call him he will sprint through the snow right to me.  He does not sprint over the snow; he tries to run through it.  There is snow flying everywhere and it seem like he is going to run right through you but he always stops short right at your feet.  He is also really enjoying playing fetch with the ball.  He does much better than his foster brothers at retrieving.

He is also very fond of having his ears scratched.  Whenever his ears are rubbed, he makes a noise in his throat (his form of purring).   He is pretty easy to please; he will make that noise whenever he is first petted, given a treat he really likes or even when he scratches his own ears.

Neal also loves gong on walks.  With the gentle leader on he has stopped pulling on his leash.  He does not a big fan of the gentle leader, but he likes when I take it out, because he knows he is going for a walk.    Neal would love to find a home where he would get to go on long walks and had a big yard to play fetch in.  He does get along with his two foster brothers, but I am sure he would also be happy as the only dog in a house.

Neal will be at the event in Richfield on Saturday.

Neal is adjusting to his new house very well.  He loves to run around in the back yard and would probably be happy spending most of the day in the yard.  He does like to play fetch and gets an extra workout when he gets the ball because his foster brothers keep trying to take it away from him.  He has been getting along very well with his foster brothers.  They frequently sleep in a big mass of dogs and fur on a couple of the dog beds in the house.  Neal is also very good at eating around other dogs.  He does eat fast, but when he finishes he just waits for the other dogs to finish their food.

Neal does enjoy all of the chew toys around the house, but is very good at sharing them.  Sometimes he will have a tug of war with one, but his tail is always wagging and no growling.   He has had free roam of the house for a couple of weeks now and only thing he has chewed on are his toys.  He has been just perfect.

He also loves going on long walks and with the gentle leader he does not pull.     He will stop a couple of times and bury his head in the snow trying to get the gentle leader off.

Neal is getting a lot better at jumping up on people to greet them.  The only time he has jumped up by someone lately is when they are on the other side of a fence.  Then he is just jumping up to get close to them.  Neal’s fur is longer than his two foster brothers, so he needs to be groomed pretty much every day to avoid matting.   It is pretty easy to do because he does like the attention.

What Neal is looking for in a forever family.

1.        A physical fence, ideally over four feet.   He has not jumped my fence, but he might be able to.

2.       Use of gentle leader for walks.  If you attach chain to collar he will pull.   He pulls so hard that he bothers his throat.  With gentle leader he is great on walks.

3.       Someone to give him the attention he loves.

4.        A home with no small dogs or cats.   He getting along very well with the resident Golden’s, but had an issue with small dog in past.

Here are a couple of pictures of this sweet boy.  One of them includes one of his foster brothers.
