Please welcome Leno to RAGOM.
Leno is a very handsome red Golden Retriever with an engaging smile and a very sweet disposition. Leno was picked up by the police as a stray in northern Minnesota. He was then housed in their animal control facility and given the name Leno. He was wearing no tags and was not microchipped. His picture was placed on their Facebook page asking for help in identifying him. This was not successful.
After 2 weeks Leno had to leave the facility per their policy and he was surrendered to RAGOM on March 3. He was then transported to his new foster home in the Cities. This transport was accomplished by 3 dedicated RAGOM volunteers, each driving a separate leg of the journey, and meeting at predetermined spots for Leno to change to a new vehicle.
Since nothing is known about Leno we have to go by his appearance and current behaviors. Leno is in very good condition. He is well-nourished with a very glossy, healthy coat without any matting or debris. At the veterinarian's on Wednesday he weighed 90 pounds and is only 5-6 pounds overweight. His feet and nails are in good condition...nails just needed a little trimming. He had 2 ear infections which are being treated. He also was microchipped and given all necessary inoculations. He tested very low positive for Lyme's disease and needs no treatment. He needs to be neutered and have dental surgery for a broken canine tooth which is scheduled for March 17 . The veterinarian estimates Leno's age as 6-7 years old.
Leno is housebroken...only one accident on the first day. He does no marking in the house. There are no signs of physical abuse and I have observed no cringing or flinching behaviors with either men or women. He is open and friendly with everyone he has met to date. And he is just a love.
His overwhelming need right now is for human interaction. Max wants to be as close to you as possible and to be petted as much as possible. He has large golden paws which he gently uses to remind you not to stop petting. He loves hugs and kisses. He is starved for affection and it guides all his behavior right now.
His special trick when he thinks he needs to persuade you to love him is to either sit on his haunches and extend both paws to you or to stand vertically and hand you those paws...or even place them on your chest or shoulders, depending on your height. This last maneuver is not always welcome, surprisingly.
Leno is not perfect, of course, and definitely needs a review in house manners and basic obedience.
He is a counter surfer without guilt or remorse. He has a thing against leashes, if he sees one he makes sure it can never be used again. Ask two of the transporters and the veterinarian. The same goes for a remote control and a collar left unattended. Ask me. Because of these quirks I need to crate him when I run short errands. But we will be working on all this in the days ahead.
Leno has everything it takes to make a perfect family dog. He is a bundle of love and sweetness wrapped in a beautiful dark red to pure gold coat that glitters in the sun. He would love a home and family that enjoys a lot of outdoor exercise and maybe even swimming in a lake.
