 8/14/06: Piper is a very petite (weighs about 40 pounds), pretty little girl that was found on the street and surrendered to a humane society. Because she has a spinning disorder, the humane society felt that RAGOM would be better able to try to help her, so they called us to take her into foster care.

Piper moved to Home for Life in 2007. She is a special needs dog that is missing the right-half of her brain which causes her to spin in circles. After a few months in foster care, it became apparent that Piper would need a special home. Home For Life offered to have her come live with them and 5 years later, she is still a happy girl. For those of you that followed her story in 2007, I thought you would enjoy some pictures of our girl walking straight. I am very thankful to HFL for providing Piper with a long, healthy and happy life.

New Piper pics-individual pics-I am trying to get last Friday's pics up also, she was a blast with the other 9 dogs in daycare! Also, Piper was a special guest at puppy kindergarten last Wednesday. She was part of our socialization, puppy playtime-exposing the dogs at a young age to dogs with disabilities was an extra bonus for our class! It was a very good learning experience for the dogs to interact with her at a young age!

Piper has had an amazing week! I think Piper is doing better with straightening out from her spin and being able to go after objects to pick up, and to target in on locations. She seems to be able to stop, think about something without spinning more, and then go after the object or through the door, or whatever task is at hand. I thought for awhile I might be imagining things, but other staff have noticed this also. Kudos to Piper girl!

On the slight downside, we have noticed an increase in her urinating and it is less concentrated, so we'll have to visit with the vet regarding this to see if it is back to the eye drops. No seizures or changes in any other way, and she has gained a bit of weight (haven't we all this winter!), so she is happy and healthy otherwise!

All of the daycare dogs so enjoy Piper being with them; none of them treat her differently because of her spinning. Here are some more pictures of Piper and her trusty sidekick, Lady! They are so very helpful with laundry!

Hi Everyone!

Piper is amazing all of us with her agility and ability to track objects this week. The two pictures are some of my favorites, she has taken to following Lady the Yellow Lab around for her toys, and boy can she track her once she gets going-talk about single minded pursuit! Wow! The second picture is not as nice (or has a bad photographer) as I told the girls to put their best faces forward! Not what I had in mind! However, Piper got to visit with some lab puppies we were working on adopting this week, and she immediately play bowed to them and thought they should join in the play group. Piper usually gets along well with everyone she sees these days. We're still working hard on the house training, and the schedule is the most important thing, deviate from it, and the mop bucket has to come out, otherwise, pretty successful!

Piper was visited this week by Dennis M, a RAGOM volunteer in our area, but she decided she was too busy playing in daycare that day to really say hi, so we're hoping that he'll come back, since he said his wife Joanne would love to visit!

I guess sometimes when you see a dog every day, you don’t realize the changes over time. A new foster dog came to our home last night (Ernie 06-464 – you can see him on his webpage), and watching and comparing the two, I realized how really far our beautiful little Piper has come. Ernie is a very shy, scared dog that will take a while to adjust to our home. Piper, in contrast, has adjusted and now is a happy-go-lucky girl. She loves to go for our morning walks, comes up to us now for her chest to get scratched, entertains herself with her stuffed animals and throws the tennis ball up and in front of herself, then pounces on it and does it again. We grin from ear to ear watching her have so much fun. Piper loves all people and all animals. She’s a little frustrated because Ernie won’t play with her yet, so she barks at him to try to discuss the problem. She’ll get him to come around eventually. We are guessing Piper’s age at just over 1 year old. She loves to dogplay, and when there’s no dog to play with, she might decide that you are the doggy for her, but she’s improving on that. She loves to run and play with toys and yet settles nicely in the house after playtime. Her favorite spot now is on the couch next to you in the evening while you watch tv.

As far as her medical and bathroom problems, she is down to only ¼ tab of Phenobarb per day for one more week, then no more Phenobarb. She has had no seizures as we have weaned her off the drug properly this time. Her excessive thirst and urination has subsided considerably now that she’s getting off the Phenobarb. She’s become quite easy and delightful to have as a houseguest. We love this petite, sweet girl and you will too.
