Welcome back, Ranger. Ranger came into RAGOM as a breeder Golden over a year ago and was adopted out. As things can sometime go with pets, his previous family and Ranger never really bonded. The best thing to do for both Ranger and the family was to let Ragom take him in and back into foster care.

Ranger is 8.5 years old. [DOB 8/16/05]

Basic highlights:

  • He is a dark copper/red Golden - He has a curly coat around his mane.
  • He is neutered - He is bigger boy (now), about 80# or so.
  • He is a very shy boy (prior breeder) - He is on thyroid meds.
  • He is good with kids - He is housebroken.

Time for a quick report on our beautiful Ranger boy. He is doing great and loving spring like the rest of us. We have been able to go for a lot more walks now, so hopefully he will really begin to shed some weight. He is walked with a sturdy harness and does well. He does fine walking with either of our resident dogs. Ranger has a very good pace and is able to walk for quite a while. He met some ‘recycling trucks’ which he was not crazy about or a teenager on a skateboard, so those types of things will take time and plain old experience(s). Very understandable. Fine when meeting other people and dogs or dogs barking along the way. He will jog along by me and actually does quite well. He is coming more out of his shell and seeks us out in other places of the house; he is getting more confident checking out other things in the home…. Sniffing new things, which is a great thing. He is becoming much more affectionate which is awesome! I cannot convey how gentle, sweet, and lovely this boy is. Definitely takes directions from the other 2 dogs, and with consistent guidance and familiar schedule, Ranger is thriving. He has done perfectly well with free roam for 6 hours! Did I say he is a good listener? Gosh, he is so wonderful to talk to and bounce ideas off! Oh, and to just lay by him and pet him and love him up….so heartwarming and comforting, for both of us. He is so patient. Be ready if a stuffed toy is left out… we are good at getting all that stuffing out! We just leave firm/hard toys out and all is well, and there are no concerns about sharing Nylabones, rubber toys, etc., or space with the other cats and dogs. Ranger would love another bigger, confident dog or dogs; he is gentle enough for all types of personalities; family who is not gone a long time; family who loves to sit on the floor and enjoy attention from a beautiful Golden. Ranger is such a magnificent boy to have and to watch. He is warming up more and more every day. As with all dogs/people, we have our days. This day, he was ready to rock without snow! Had more grass on him than the yard! Snow on it again now, however, so it goes for spring in the Midwest. He will be getting another groom/bath soon, and then a recheck of his thyroid level and see how that is going (he is on Thyrosyn each day, 1 tab for 2X a day). He seems totally fine. Small little purple pills right in his food. He does this little happy dance/Golden grumble noise when the food is getting ready; it is SO cute! He is feeling great. We have not been able to get the exercise we need, unfortunately, due to weather and me not feeling good for over a week. When we do go for walks, he really seems to enjoy them and trots right along. He loves the fresh air. He does fantastically with my dogs and other dogs who run up to our fence barking (on each side as we are the only one with a fence!). He could care less about the cats. Ranger is one big huggable "bear!" We try to take him more often for a ride so he gets used to it more, even if we don’t need to go anywhere. Have doggie beds? He loves them. He and the other 2 sleep in harmony at night in our bedroom, and yes, more doggie pillows! He will destuff a toy if left out, but sure enjoys the rubber ones, Nylabones, or peanut butter in a Kong. He enjoys bananas too. Ranger Bear, what a doll!

Ranger boy is doing great. More and more out of his shell, follows me where I go, patiently waits for whatever I am doing and just gives me that warm, Golden ‘glow’ of a look. I think he is feeling quite good and is handling the schedules for time/feeding, etc. just fine. When I come home from work, I can hear his ‘chime’ bark from the garage, along with the other 2!

I work early mornings Monday - Friday, 6:30 am until about noon. So that schedule seems to work well for him. Ranger is a boy who will take time to warm up and get his confidence going. If I had just had a video the other day, but he was ‘running laps’ in the backyard with our Maggie!!! Wow. Big boy in motion, what a hoot! He really enjoys the gang, and he truly does enjoy being around us and just hanging out. Loves his little rawhides (supervised), treats (healthy), fresh pineapple, the outside, doggie beds, and pets (many!) (oh yeah, and a large crate for the ultimate safe spot). He enjoys being brushed too. He does have a wonderful coat and a stunning color. Ranger will make an outstanding and wonderful addition to that ‘right’ home…. Looking for a very gentle soul, one who wants to learn and will very much respond to love and guidance and needs a lot of patience, and a family who is in love with this breed and who understands the ‘breeder’ dog past. This big boy will make you melt, every which way.

Ranger is doing quite well. He is sleeping, eating, and walking fine. Even a few romps with the other two in the snow! So fun to see and watch. I think Ranger could live in winter/snow all the time the way he loves to roll in it, or just lay there. He seeks me out when I am in another room. He, of course, as all Goldens, can be petted and petted non-stop. He did have his well-care vet check and he is a whopping 87.8 pounds. (Holy moley.) Very fixable, however. He is on a slow ‘diet,’ of course, tapering off the amount(s) of food he gets. I have discovered he really enjoys fresh pineapple and hard-boiled eggs. He will enjoy a small rawhide with the rest of the crew (supervised, of course) and sure likes those (the ones which are about the size of a little finger). Ranger is just the most gentle boy. Those soft, beautiful eyes. And after a wonderful bath from my outstanding groomer here in Sioux Falls, Ronita @ Wags ‘N Whiskers, such a soft, beautiful coat. It is so curly around his mane and there is gentle frosting beginning on his face.

Little chunky boy for a while and we will work on that. Now that “spring” might be here? Of course, a good diet. Ranger met two of our grandchildren this weekend and he is fine, yet quite shy around them. They can gently pet and love him up. Ranger is the type of dog who really enjoys the quiet setting and still wants his safe spots. We will continue to have the large crate up in the kitchen/family room area for his comfort, but the door is always open. It will take a while for Ranger to come out of his shell yet. He was a breeder boy, so he will not be a lively, outgoing type of guy, but rather a quiet, loving, shy, beautiful Golden boy who enjoys hanging out by humans and dogs, and yes, cats! Our cats can lay by him and he is fine. Again, the best descriptive word I think for Ranger is ‘gentle’ giant.

Considering his size, he does fine getting into the truck and seems to ride just fine. At the vet check, he did quite well. Other than his thyroid meds, he is just fine. Walking with him goes great; he trots right along. For safety, currently we use both the collar and a harness. The area is new to him, as are all the dogs in the neighborhood and these ‘breeder’ dogs can be/are much more scared/worried/concerned about their new surroundings, so caution is always recommended. We absolutely adore this big boy and he is doing better every day. A glorious Golden indeed.
