Introducing Rory 15-122.

Rory is a smaller female Golden Doodle, weighing in at 44 pounds. Rory came into foster care May 16, 2015 as a retired breeder. Not much is known about her past. She appears to be around 3 years old. She has been to the vet and is now up to date on all her immunizations as well as her heartworm and flea/tick preventative medications. She is going to be spayed on May 29, 2015.

Rory arrived at our house one very scared, skinny little girl. She is 6-10 pounds under weight. Initially she wouldn’t approach any person and stayed curled up in her crate for the first two days, typical breeder behavior. What a difference a week makes. By day 3, she was exploring the area around her crate and was curious about the 2 & 4 legged creatures in this strange place. By day 4 we had her following us around (people and animals), mastering stairs and going to the bathroom outside. She went to the vet and groomer. She was hesitant, but slowly approached others.

Day 5 had her bringing toys out of the toy bucket, carrying a stuffed animal just like her resident foster brother and tail wagging as she approaches the humans for some love. Day 6 was her first walk. She was hesitant, but curious. She got scared when she encountered some kids playing that ran up to her, but when their mom had them step back and she gently bent down to greet her, Rory approached her and enjoyed the attention. Day 7 was her first night in our bedroom, out of the crate! Today, she is happy- ears up, tail wagging just hanging out with her foster brother and sister (who weren’t the most welcoming of her when she first got here, but she’s won them over too!)

What we know about her thus far:

  • Has a great appetite
  • Rides well in the car
  • Walks well with her martingale collar (and a slip lead for safety for now)
  • She has gone 4 days with no accidents in the house
  • Loves her crate-she goes in willingly when we leave the house.
  • She is scared of sudden movements or approaching people. Slow introductions are a must
  • She is not afraid of loud noises-she doesn’t flinch with the vacuum, hairdryer or an electric drill
  • Shows her young age and lack of training when she gets into things she shouldn’t or there is food on the counter.
  • No resource guarding

What she needs in her forever home:

  • A patient family that will let her build trust at her pace
  • Older children, or children that will understand that she doesn’t like sudden movement
  • Another dog to help her continue to build her confidence and teach her how to enjoy life. Our dogs are old and lazy. You can tell she really wants to play, but they don’t want to so a more active dog will give her what she needs.
  • While a fence isn’t required, until she gets to know her family, safety while outside will be important. She is showing signs of great recall, but is still really learning her name!
  • Additional training to help her build her confidence and keep her safe. Right now, she doesn’t know any commands, so we will start that training this week.

If you have the patience and love needed to help her reach her full potential, contact your placement advisor. She’s come so far in so little time. I can hardly wait to see her fully confident.

Rory is officially home!

She was adopted by the most wonderful and loving “mama”. Rory doesn’t know how lucky she is to have been picked by Sandy S to join her family.

She will have beautiful walks along a lake to go see her Mimi and Papa who live very close to Sandy. She gets a new “Boy” and “Girl” to love her as well. Most importantly, Sandy and her family are experienced RAGOM adopters, having brought another puppy mill mama into their home. Sandy will give Rory the strength and love she needs to continue to grow into the wonderful, loving dog she is meant to be. She is well on her way to the Golden Life!

Thank you Sandy and family for loving her so much already.

Rory has had a Great couple of weeks! She’s continued to blossom in foster care. She loves the toy bucket and brings everything out by the end of the day. It appears to be a competition between her and “the grumpy old man” but the two of them have come to an understanding and now enjoy teasing each other without any grumbling. They even share a shade spot in the yard!

She survived the 4th of July without any problems. The noise did not bother her one bit. In fact, she layed by her foster sister from time to time who was very scared. Rory freely approaches everyone in the family now and has come to appreciate a good belly rub!

Her health is so much better. She is now at goal weight: 50.2 pounds! You can see by this picture that her hip bones and ribs are no longer visible!

The best news is she had a wonderful family that came to see her this week! I think it was love at first sight, but I’m bias. I am proud and happy to report that Rory is adoption pending! She will be joining her forever family in August! Until then, she stays with us for more TLC…

It’s been a busy couple of weeks and foster mom has been delinquent in telling Rory’s story. Here is a quick re-cap of Rory’s growth the past two weeks:

Rory has learned “sit” as you can see by the beautiful pose in the picture.

She has been making the rounds about town to get more comfortable in new situations and she is doing great. We’ve been to the 3 of the 4 pet stores in town and she actually likes wondering around there. Rory runs errands with us whenever possible, however we learned not to go right after eating and doing lots of stops and starts…She got car-sick which then lead us to the carwash, where she made a big hit with the patrons waiting for their cars! Her big adventure was her first meet and great! While her tail wasn’t wagging, she managed to make an appearance on the field as we promoted RAGOM and met lots of people, including the Mascot!

She’s been back to the vet twice to check her weight gain and we are happy to report she is at 49 pounds! The goal was 50 so I think we will make that. Gone are the sharp hip bones and vertebrae and in their place is a beautiful light colored coat with dark gold highlights and a happy, healthy dog.

This sweet, loving girl only requires two things in her forever home- a loving, patient family who will commit to helping her on her journey to the golden life and a companion dog that will assist on this journey. As you can see, she loves her foster siblings!

Three whole weeks with Miss Rory now and they have been delightful. She has settled into the routine of the house quite well. She does wake up in the middle of the night and thinks it’s time to eat but a quick trip outside for some “business” and then back to bed is all she gets.

We’ve learned a few more things about her this past week:

  • She does not have any storm anxiety.
  • There is no resource guarding with her. Her foster brother, however doesn’t share his toys very well but she has learned to read him pretty darn well and knows when he wants to play and when he doesn’t. Crabby old man!

  • She’s learned how to get in and out of the car
  • She’s learned the word walk and enjoys going on them

  • She has earned free roam for short periods of time. I would let her have it all the time, but don’t want crabby pants to pester her. She likes her crate and is in it with the door open occasionally anyway.
  • She has become affectionate…freely giving kisses now
  • She loves to be outside and soak in the sun!

This past week we ventured on a few outings to introduce her to the world. We went to Shop Dog to meet the workers there and she did pretty darn good. She was scared the first little while, but got a treat and then started to explore the store. She let the worker there pet her. Her next big adventure was significantly more stimulating…a fundraiser walk! Lots of people, lots of noise. Her foster brother and sister joined her to help her feel more relaxed. Tail was tucked and she clung to foster mom like glue, but gradually relaxed. She found a couple of people who were slow to approach her and wouldn’t you know it, those were the people she would walk over to on her own. She’s learning to trust! Eventually her tail came out, but never wagged. Baby steps! Now she knows she can handle those situations.

Rory will be attending the Bark in the Park event on Sunday, June 14th in Sioux Falls at the Canaries Stadium.

This sweet girl is ready for her forever home. Please contact your placement coordinator to learn more about her!

It’s official.  I have a second shadow and her name is Rory!  Her need to be by her people has grown pretty strong.  She prefers foster mom, but will settle for foster dad if I’m not around.   She’s even started to give kisses!  I’m so happy that she feels that comfortable so soon.  Her next favorite spot is next to one of the other dogs.  I’m amazed how nice it is to have 3 dogs…don’t tell foster dad.

This week Rory continued to show more confidence.  She paces to let us know when she has to go out.  No accidents this week!  She is still crated when we are gone for longer periods of time but have started to let her loose when we are gone for short periods of time.  She really doesn’t chew anything and stays out of garbage and other things she might be curious about.   She (and we) sleeps better if she is crated at night.

The neighbor and her daughter that saw her the first night she arrived stopped over this weekend when we were outside.  They couldn’t believe she was the same scared dog they two weeks ago.  I had them just let her approach them and Rory didn’t disappoint.  She let both of them pet her and then leaned in for more!  The girl was 8 and understood to let Rory make friends first.

She was spayed on Friday and is recovering quite nicely.  She also gained a half pound.  Her pictures this week are of her right after surgery when the anesthesia was still making her sleepy and then the next day-full of life and love.  Such a resilient dog.  When she is fully healed, I hope to get her with a more playful dog to see how she does.  Right now, the two lazy ones here are helping her recuperate better!
