Welcome goofy fun loving Rowdy into the RAGOM family. I am grateful that St. Paul Animal Control recognized his stellar personality and contacted RAGOM. He does not have a mean bone in his body and just wants  to play and be loved.

He looks like a big jowly hound from the front but with the feathering of a Golden Retriever in the back! He may have some yellow lab mixed in too.

Rowdy is estimated to be 18 months old and is healthy, He is now up to date on vaccines, has been micro chipped and neutered. He weighs in at about 80lbs and may grow a bit more…. I say that because he seems all head and paws. He is housebroken and would love to live with another playful dog or have a human running buddy!

Rowdy needs work on basic manners and commands. He has puppy like energy and pulls on the leash. He jumps up on people but in the few days he has had in foster care he is learning that he doesn’t get the attention he wants when he does that. He likes to chew but hasn’t chewed on anything inappropriate. He was hesitant getting in the car but relaxed and settled in for the ride.

Because of his size and energy and liking to jump up on people, he should not go to a home with small children. He needs socialization and training but a family that is willing to provide that will be rewarded with a fabulous family member.  He is a sweet, mellow fella!

Hi! Rowdy here. Just thought I would tell you about my fabulous Memorial Day weekend. I went camping and got to stay outside most of the time for 3 days. Sleeping in the camper was a little tight. There was just enough room on the floor for myself and my foster sister, Curry. We squeezed in next to each other and I slept like a rock. We started every day with a long walk and then sat by the lake and waited for all the other campers to come out to play. There were lots of kids that wanted to meet me, so foster mom kept taking me to say hello to all these strangers. Some were lots smaller than me, so I stayed on my best behavior while they petted me or rubbed my head with dandelions (that kid was funny!). I loved all the walks, even when my foster parents were going REALLY slowly while looking for something called "morels." I got in a little swimming every day. My foster mom said I look a like an otter while swimming. At night, we sat around the campfire, so I stretched out in the grass and relaxed. My foster mom wants to say a few words now.

Rowdy is doing very well on walks now. I use either the Gentle Leader or the Easy Walk harness and he trots by my side nicely. He barked at the daycare group walking by and it dawned on me that he just wanted to see them, so I brought him out and 4 of them mobbed him. He loved all the attention. One kid even touched his tongue and he didn't mind!

Rowdy doesn’t look like a golden, but he sure has the golden personality. Everyone that meets him falls in love with his easy-going gentle ways. He is going to make some family so happy because he is eager to please and always friendly.

He sleeps all night at the foot of our bed. He wakes us with a nudge if he has to go out. That usually happens around 6am. We have been leaving the dogs gated together in the kitchen and foyer area for about 3 hours a day. The longest that they have been left was 6 hours and he did fine.

Here he is taking a break from playing fetch!

Rowdy attended the RAGOM meet and greet on Saturday. He took a nap in the car on the way. He wanted to play with all the dogs and loved all the attention from the people. He is a very social guy. He also demonstrated that walking nicely on a lead is still a work in progress. He does well when there are few distractions, but has a hard time when there are so many interesting things going on. Our resident dog greeted him like a long lost friend when we returned home.

He goes potty almost immediately when we take him out now and is sleeping through the night. He is happy with a couple of 20 minute walks in a day or some fetch in the yard. He will not “drop” on command yet, but will let one tennis ball go when a second on is thrown.

Rowdy will let me pet him, pick up his food bowl and put my hand in the bowl to add a treat while he is eating. None of it causes him any distress.

We haven’t worked much on crate training because our crate is a bit small and he doesn’t seem to have destructive tendencies. He picks up a shoe and moves it to another room once in a while, but hasn’t destroyed anything.

I’ve included a picture of Rowdy showing off his newly learned “Sit/Stay”.

Rowdy is a big lovable meathead!

He has managed to entice our 8 year old resident Golden Retriever to play much more often than I thought was possible. Here are pictures of them playing tug in the house and romping in the yard. He would like a younger dog to wrestle with all the time so if you are looking for a companion for your medium to large dog, Rowdy may be for you.

He met 3 young children at the park yesterday and was VERY relaxed with them. No jumping up and he enjoyed them examining all that extra neck skin! If we can stop his jumping up entirely, I would trust him with even very young children. We will work on that.

He is a messy drinker but does not drool. He has a pretty strong prey drive and would like to chase all the squirrels and birds.

Rowdy is an amazing athlete... he jumped  a 30 inch dog gate from a stand still and landed on our steps to greet foster dad who was coming down the stairs.

He is very calm around the house for such a young dog; settling down for a nap if we sit down for a meal or to read. He also plays well alone. He loves to bat a ball around with those big paws and flips his toys around to entertain himself.
