This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Spice is a 8+ year old male GR. He was brought in as a stray, so little is known about his past.  He was fostered temporarily in Annandale. He was vetted there. He is very healthy, except for his double ear infections and for his weight....102 pounds. He is very overweight! Needless to say, he's on a diet.

He moved from rural Annandale to a busy St. Paul neighborhood on Saturday  afternoon. He joined our resident zoo...three dogs, one cat and one parakeet, plus two visiting dogs...with no issues at all.

He's been home alone for five or so hours at a time, and he's even endured a couple of thunderstorms....all with no issues. The first night he slept in the kitchen, but on Monday  night he had found a corner in the bedroom.

We went for a walk on the weekend, his first foster had taken him for long walks but we only went a mile or so. He walks like a gentleman! Flat collar and all, no pulling. If it ever stops raining, we'll go for more walks.

We'll update more as we get to know this gentle giant. So far it's fair to say we're in love with Spice.

Dear RAGOM,

With a heavy heart we wish to share that Spice 15-299 (renamed Scotty) crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 11/30/16 at the same time as his adoptive sister Jade 14-069 who had also recently became ill. His age was uncertain as he was a former stray, but it was clear he lived into his senior years. He came into our lives on Christmas Day 2015. We were looking for a dog that could step right into therapy dog work and found Scotty to be just that dog. He was so sweet and just loved sharing his puppy calmness with all he met. He visited multiple facilities in the short time we had him, and brought us such joy in our home. He began not eating well and losing weight this fall, and was diagnosed with a large tumor on his spleen. He continued to want to share his love with others and participated in his last therapy dog visit in his usual happy manner just 10 days before dying. We will miss him dearly.

Photos of Spice (now named Scotty) including him doing his therapy dog work, for which he is a natural.  He needs daily ear drops to keep away infections, but that is working OK.  Otherwise he is a happy Golden living a relaxing life in his forever home.

We adopted Spice on Christmas Day. What a great Christmas present for the whole family!  He is absolutely a super dog.  He was a stray so he had to be given a name. We understand the name Spice was the result of some initial confusion regarding his sex.  A very thick fur coat that was quite matted and filthy combined with his enormous 102 pound size apparently led to this confusion. Now that there is a certainty in this regard we thought renaming him with a more boy-like name would be appropriate.

So we named him Scotty.  He is already responding well to this name.

Thanks to great foster work with diet and exercise, which we are working hard to continue, he is down to 88 pounds when he was weighed at the vet a couple days ago.

He is fitting in great with our other two former RAGOM dogs Skipper and Jade.  They are all great pals already.

He walks great on a leash, sleeps the whole night through next to our bed, and just loves to be petted.

We had a busy weekend. We learned more about Spice too. Nothing too surprising.

On Friday evening two dogs came for the weekend. We had never met one of them, the other was a regular and my boys know to steer clear of her until she's settled in. Everybody met the male dog with zero issues. This male is super chill and speaks dog perfectly. The female isn't a fan of other dogs until she knows them. She told Spice off almost immediately....loudly and right in his face. He decided he was scared of her and wouldn't go near her for the rest of the evening. He outweighs her by at least 25 pounds but he's definitely NOT a fighter!

On Sunday we took care of a three month old Golden. Some dogs hate puppies, but Spice did really well with the puppy, also not a surprise....but good to know. They are both Goldens Retrievers but on the opposite spectrums...one is the big red American kind and the other is the light colored, almost British looking golden.

My foster dog Spice doesn't actually even look when you say Spice. He was a stray and someone in RAGOM named him Spice. At that point, nobody had even checked and they were saying he was a female. We've checked....he's a boy. However, he doesn't know that Spice is his name. I've tried all the common Golden Retriever names in the hopes that he would at least look at me; Red, Rusty, Copper, Murphy, Max and so on, all with no luck. So, we call him Fat Boy. He answers to that. In about 30 pounds or so, that name won't apply to him any more. Hopefully by then he'll be adopted and will have a nice new name to go along with his nice new permanent home.

In the meantime, he's hanging out in St. Paul. He fits right in with our gang. He's pretty easy to have around and he seems to get along with everyone and everything he meets. He has free roam of the main floor of our house all of the time. Zero accidents. The people where he got groomed said he was most patient with them...he was a mess!....and he seemed to enjoy the whole process.

He gets so excited around meal time! He jumps around and actually has lift...he can get his whole body up in the air. He doesn't try to steal anyone else's food, nor does he jump on anyone. Once his dish hits the floor, it's empty.
So if there's anybody out there who wants to rescue poor Spice from his terrible foster who is calling him Fat Boy before his self image is totally ruined, contact RAGOM and they will start the gears in motion.
Will post more later.

Spice likes to roll in the yard. He likes to roll in things. At some point before he came to Ragom, he must have rolled in something VERY nasty because he smelled really bad! I can't imagine how bad he smelled before his first foster bathed him, because even after several baths, he still stunk. So, once his ear infections got cleared up, he had a spa appointment. He definitely smells better...not sure he is perfect yet, but better! He is beautiful looking after his grooming.

If you're interested in meeting Spice, he's ready for adoption. You can help him get to his perfect weight as well as we can. Email Ragom if you're interested in meeting Spice. He's a totally normal, issue free Golden Retriever who is just waiting for his forever home.

We got a kittie this weekend. She is a little peanut of a thing and has no fear. I think she mystifies Spice.

Spice walks like a dream. We do a few miles a day when time and weather permits. You can sort of tell from this image how much wider Spice (left) is when compared to the residents Finnegan and Murray. He's basically the same width as the two of them are together....and they are average sized goldens.
