Please welcome Oscar to his new life as a RAGOM dog.  We’ve had Oscar in our house for just a few days but he has proved to be an absolute delight.  Here is what we know about his past:

Oscar is a golden doodle, about 2 years old, and weighs about 50 lbs. (he needs a little fattening up).  He has lived with several families.  His last family surrendered him to a Humane Society in Missouri because they felt that he was just too big for their residence.

We don’t know (and Oscar isn’t telling) what happened in his past life but our guess is that at one point he was hit by a car and sustained several injuries that were never treated.  His left front shoulder and elbow don’t work right and he walks on three legs – holding his left front leg in front of him (see picture).  His upper and lower jaw is also slightly out of alignment (probably from the same accident)   He carries his left leg in front of him like he is getting ready to give a salute.  He has some range of motion and control of the front leg and will sometimes use it for balance when he is trying to get from 0 to 60 mph on our wood floors.

We took Oscar to see Dr. Jean yesterday for a complete physical.  After taking x-rays of his shoulder and elbow and elbow she will be consulting with RAGOM’s Orthopedic Surgeon to see what, if anything, can be done about these old injuries.  There will be more to come on this in the days ahead.  The good news is that Oscar passed the rest of the exam with flying colors – no parasites, clean ears, and clean teeth.  It looks like he picked up a case of kennel cough either in the shelter or on the transport to Minnesota and he is on a 10 day regimen of antibiotics to take care of that.

In the course of a few days he has totally won us over.  We’ve never had a dog settle in with us so quickly.  He met our resident dog (a 12 year old senior) with no problems.  They already share dog beds and attention.  We haven’t yet brought the toys out so that is yet to be tested.  We have two 11 year old cats who actually run the household and he has done just fine with them.  He is curious but backs off when they hiss or give him “the look”.  They will now lie down within a foot of Oscar when he is sleeping.  We were told that he is good with kids but we’ll need to test that out in the next weeks.

Oscar is a cuddle-bug.  It’s clear that he has been well treated in his young life and has no fear of humans.  He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body and he is amazingly gentle.  Even in the recent frigid weather he jumps for joy when we are getting ready to go outside.  We suspect that he can move pretty fast on his three legs outside but it has been too icy to test that out yet.  He appears to be completely housebroken and sleeps through the night on a dog bed next to our bed.

We’ll do another update shortly as we learn more about this sweet boy.

Oscar (now known as Scout) is doing great. We kind of forget that he has only been with us less than six months. He is full of quirks and is pushy, a bit obnoxious (I say this with love), a little rough around the edges and a total delight.  He makes us laugh all day, every day and we have all but forgotten his injury. Of course others notice and ask about it often but it sure doesn't hinder him in any way.

We are a little overprotective of the dogs at the lake and make them wear their life jackets. A couple years ago, Bella became entangled in weeds and was pulled under water (she is a very strong swimmer). I jumped in and got her loose but ever since then we have been a little cautious and with Scout's leg, were worried he would need some extra support. (He does not care for swimming....so far...but we make him wear a life jacket, too, so that Bella doesn't feel so self conscious :)

Oscar the Doodle has been adopted and is now happily exploring his forever home and getting to know his forever family. Did he ever hit the jackpot! First he picked up a new name. He is now Scout – a perfect name for what he does as he is always running ahead to check out everything. Second he picked up a great new family. He now will have his own two legged sister and brother as well as loving parents. The F family will be a great, nurturing environment for this little guy.

But the frosting on the cake for Scout is that he has also gained a fur sister. Here is Scout and older sister Bella (Scout is in front) getting some rest after a morning play session.

Oscar experienced way too many changes in his young life. Scout, here’s wishing you a long and happy life with your forever family. We’ll miss you!

Finally “Oscar” wanted us to make sure we sent his very special thanks to the “Z” family for sponsoring him for these last several weeks.

Oscar the Doodle is back with us. Unfortunately one of his new family members turned out to be allergic to him. The little guy settled right back in with us but we know that he misses his kids to play with and to take him for runs.

We, and Oscar, have learned some things over the last several weeks. First, Oscar likes to play with dog toys. Our Resident Dog does not pay much attention to toys and neither did Oscar. His family provided him with a lot of toys (rope toys and soft toys) and he brought them with him when he came back to us. He LOVES them. He will gather them all up and take them to his dog bed for when he takes naps. He handles the soft toys gently and has not de-stuffed any (yet). He gets a bit perturbed when our Resident shows any interest but he grudgingly shares if RD seems interested.

Oscar has also showed us that he mastered stairs while he was gone. The stairs down to our family room are steep and have a sharp corner with no landing. Oscar never dared to use them. When he came back one of the first things he did was to go down and then back up. In the past few days he goes up and down at the drop of a hat – sometimes just to show us how good he is at it!

Finally, we learned how much Oscar loves kids. In spite of his young dog rambunctiousness he has a wonderful, gentle way of relating with children. It’s clear to us that he will really thrive with a family with kids. Oscar is more than ready to find his forever home.

There has been a lot happening with Oscar the Doodle lately. It has been determined that Oscar’s injured left front leg and shoulder can’t be fixed by surgery. The injury (we suspect he was hit by a car) was just too long ago and was left untreated so that the bones are fused. That’s the bad news. The good news is that Oscar has obviously done a great job adapting. He moves well on our wood floors and we routinely take 1 mile walks with no problems. He doesn’t have that smooth Golden glide but he gets from here to there very quickly on his three good legs. It is interesting that he has some range of motion and control of the left leg which he uses occasionally for balance and to wash his face. When he gives the “Golden Paw” for more attention he also uses the left leg.

Oscar is a typical two year old – as much a puppy as he is an adult dog. Our resident dog puts up with him but we think that he is probably counting the days until Oscar finds a home of his own. When Oscar finally gets worn out the two of them get on just fine. Here is a picture of the two of them settling down together for a mid-morning nap.

The biggest news is that Oscar has a family who is very interested in him! We all want to make sure that Oscar is the right dog as one member of the family has some severe allergies. In reading up on Golden Doodles we understand that the chances are good that Oscar will be hypoallergenic but there is no guarantee. Our plan is to get Oscar neutered (appointment next week) and next we’ll take him in for grooming when the stitches are healed and then right over to visit the family. That way we can minimize any dander that might be coming from our resident dog or our cats and see if we can determine if there is an allergy problem or not. Keep your fingers crossed over the next several weeks that everything works out.

Oscar is a great dog and with maturity (and obedience training) he will be a great family dog. He is very smart and very eager to please so he will learn quickly what he needs to do to become the best family pet. Meanwhile we’re enjoying having this 54 lb. bundle of energy around.
