Shawnee has been enjoying the warmer temps mostly because the squirrels are more active, giving him something to look at! He's quite the squirrel hound, running from window to window. Also, on walks, he keeps looking up in the trees for squirrels.
In the past few weeks, he's been quite the counter surfer, knocking down baby gates to get to that loaf of bread, that stick of butter, that entire package of mint Oreos, the dried porcini mushrooms brought from Italy, the 2# bag of pecans...if he stays out of the kitchen, he's such a good boy!
He loves going on walks and he had another great session with the little German Shepherd neighbor girl yesterday. I'm amazed how fast he is, at first, keeping up with her! He was racing after her from one end if the yard to the other. He did tire out eventually but he was fast for an older gent.
He was excited to hear that he has a family interested in him!

Shawnee is doing great! He's a total mama's boy, following me everywhere I go. He's become a bed hound, snuggling in as soon as he sees the other dog head that way. He continues to be curious about the cat and seems to want to play, but the cat wants to be in control of that. He just finished an energetic wrestling session with the resident, so now he's settling in for a sleepy Sunday, hoping someone who's looking for an adoring companion might give us a call!

Shawnee had a booster for his vaccinations, his incision had healed nicely, the hot spot is getting better so he's ready to meet you! The cold weather has got him snuggled up in the flannel sheets, chewing bones with his girlfriend Roxie (the resident RAGOM girl) and occasionally swiping some freshly baked bread off of the counter!

Shawnee wants to thank Jodi S. for being his sponsor!
Shawnee is doing great! He's all healed up from his neutering, his hot spot is getting better, he has to get a booster for one of his shots on Wed., and then he is good to go! He got to go on a little excursion yesterday to St. Cloud to visit my mother in a senior housing complex. He did GREAT on the car ride and he was a very good visitor!
On New Year's Eve, when he was left here for a while, he got into a little mischief. I had baked some bread for a friend for a gift and had it all wrapped up in a gift bag and sat it on the floor near the door to make sure it would get where it needed to go. A few minutes later, I hear some snuffling, and sure enough, he's managed to open the wrapping and give the bread a taste test, which it passed successfully. I growled a little bit myself, then lopped off the end that he had tasted and wrapped the salvageable bread up in plastic wrap, leaving the damaged end sitting on the counter near the sink. I went out later to have dinner with friends and when I came back, the kitchen was a disaster. SOMEONE had done some counter-surfing! He hasn't done this before, so I think he may have been after the rest of that bread! I'm going to have to test him and see if he really is a counter surfer.
Shawnee generally sleeps on the floor at the side of the bed, but last week, he got some bed privileges. He climbed up on the bed, and proved to be quite the snuggler! He continues to be a very sweet guy. He gets along great with the resident dog, and he and the cat are developing some kind of relationship--they almost play together, but the cat is making sure that he is in charge!
Shawnee loves going for walks, has done great with the dogs that he has met--except for the humping problem--and he's a delightful companion. He's waiting to meet his forever home.

Shawnee got neutered on Monday. Poor guy had kind of a rough time after the surgery. He wasn't feeling well and he was really out of it when he got home. He drank some water but wouldn't eat anything, which was a problem because there was no way to get him to take his meds if he wasn't eating, especially the pain meds. He threw up some water about 3-4 times, but then settled in and by the next day, he seemed to be feeling better. Except for that darn cone, which stressed him--and me--out! He couldn't understand what this THING was around his neck, and he doesn't really have an idea of how big he is, so he would just charge around when it got caught on something, resulting in a rearrangement of furniture and piles of stuff that I should have organized long ago, the upending of a Christmas floral arrangement, and numerous other things. I tried one of the inner tube collars but he could still reach his hot spot and his incision so that was no help. I tried to get a Comfy Cone but by that time, we had resigned ourselves to the chaos. I take the cone off him when I am around and can keep an eye on his licking, but put it on him at night and if I am gone, and that system seems to be working fine. His hot spot really is clearing up and the incision looks great, so this fine gentleman is ready for some dating! He's waiting for your call!
One other thing the vet noticed. He coughs a bit, especially when puling on the leash and they checked him out during the surgery. He seems to have a partial laryngeal paralysis, which she said is no big deal, except in the summer or if he gets overexerted, then he'll have a little trouble catching his breath. They said he just needs to be settled down and, in the summer, kept cool, but it shouldn't be a problem.
He's such a good dog! We went visiting yesterday and he had a fantastic romp with a young German Shepherd. What was surprising was how he kept up with her! He's in great shape! He was racing around the yard and she loved the game of chase. And then afterward, he just plopped. He is still kind of a velcro dog and wants to be around his people whenever possible. This morning, we did a little test for separation anxiety when I took the resident dog to the vet. I didn't know how Shawnee would respond to being left alone, but he did great! We were only gone less than an hour, but no damage. He does tend to knock down baby gates unless they are very secure, but but he didn't get into anything while we were gone. I think he would prefer to have another dog in the house, and he does so well with other dogs that it just becomes more of a party. He has stopped humping the resident dog unless they are involved in a serious wrestling match, but he still does hump a lot when he first meets a dog. The young Fraulein the other day let him know it was not okay with a few little nips as he persisted, but then they did just fine.
He's a big love, pretty gentle (unless he needs to nudge you to pet him) and so sweet. He's kind of a whiner/whimperer when he wants to get to you, but he also responds really well when told to lay down, to sit and sometimes will stay. He's a great companion and would love to be with someone who is home a lot and wants to hang out with him.

Shawnee arrived here 4 days ago. He went to the vet Monday morning and got a clean bill of health, except for his hot spot. He has a chronic hot spot on his left front paw. Right now, he's on antibiotics and prednisone to stop him from licking it, and the treatment seems to be working. (One other note, the vet said the level of protein in his blood was slightly elevated but since everything else was fine, she was not concerned; she suggested a recheck in 6 months.) He had a trip to the groomer on Tuesday and came home looking all fancy with his Christmas bandana on. (He even ended up on the Facebook page for Ollu, the groomer.) He'll be neutered this Saturday, hopefully, and then he'll be looking for a new home!
Shawnee is a gorgeous elderly boy. He's got a gorgeous red coat with lovely blond highlights, and an adorable grey face. He's a bit of a velcro dog, following me everywhere I go. He may have a bit of separation anxiety which I am keeping an eye on. When he was a the groomer, they kenneled him for a short time, and when I picked him up, his nose was all red, perhaps from rubbing it on the kennel in an effort to get out. When I have had him outside in the fenced yard, when I step outside the fence, he gets a little nervous. He had a cone on initially, after coming from the vet, to stop him from licking his paw, but that was a little too stressful, so I've wrapped the hot spot and he's doing a good job of leaving it alone. The cone stressed him out.
He does great with other people! We had a visitor last night (photo attached) and he laid down in her lap and collected all the pets he could. He LOVES being petted and hugged (and he's a BIG guy so he's fun to hug)! There's a resident cat and I'm still not sure how he is with that. He has handled it pretty well, but he IS interested in the cat, and the cat does not share that interest. When the cat runs, I can see Shawnee's ears go up and suddenly he goes after the cat, but I'm not sure if it's a problem or not. There have been no issues, and in fact, they have been nose-to-nose, checking each other out and they all sleep in the same room, so things are pretty cool with them so far.
Shawnee has been great with other dogs with one issue; he could also go by the name Sir Humps-A-Lot. He was relentless in humping my resident dog at first, but now it has settled down and only happens when they wrestle. We had a visiting dog the other night, and Shawnee was relentless with him also. Thankfully, that dog has a great disposition and handled it well; another dog might have responded more aggressively. The vet suggests keeping him on a leash and pulling him off when he starts humping. He's been very friendly with all of the dogs and plays well with my resident.
He's a really, really sweet old guy. He just wants to be loved. He's got the "golden nudge" down pat. He tires easily and spends most of the time sleeping next to my chair in the office, or wherever I am plopped. He walks well on a leash, he handles the stairs fine, he sleeps right next to the bed. He's had no accidents in the house and does his business when he's let outside. He's a great pal, and just a gorgeous guy! After he recovered from neutering, he could be yours!
