Please welcome Skylar 14-032 to RAGOM. Skylar is an honorary Golden. She came from death row in a shelter in Kentucky, so nothing is known of her past other than she was brought in as a stray. Skylar is thought to be around 3 years old and appears to be a Belgan Shepherd or mix. A huge Thank You to the people in Kentucky and all the volunteer transporters for getting Skylar to safety, to Minnesota and in RAGOM's care.

When Skylar arrived at my house, she was a bit nervous from all the changes and 3 days of travel. Skylar met my pack (3 dogs and 3 cats) with no problems. The cats were a bit scared of her at first, but became friendly to her after a day or so. I kept Skylar tethered to me for the first few hours until I was sure it was safe for everyone. We went for a walk before it got dark and Skylar did great. She does not pull on the leash. She was still nervous about her new surroundings and didn't eat all of her supper. Skylar went in the large wire crate for the first night with no problems and was quiet the entire night. My other foster dog, Leon 13-402 , slept in another crate next to her the first night. He usually sleeps upstairs in bed with me.

The next morning, I let Skylar out of the crate and she was very happy to see me. She went out in the fenced area with the other dogs and did her business. Then my temporary foster girl, Bailey 14-025 , initiated play with Skylar. I was a bit concerned that Skylar might get too rough with Bailey. There were no yips and Bailey loved it. I limited the play the first few times to be sure it was safe. Now, the play goes on every time they go outside. They wrestle and chase in the large fenced area I have. Skylar did better eating her breakfast.

Skylar went to the vet later that day for her wellness exam and to get up to date on vaccines. Skylar was in excellent health other than she had 4 or 5 types of worms. I got treatment for those and have completed that. I will need to have her checked again to be sure we got all the worms. Skylar also got microchipped. Skylar is 5-8 lbs light of her ideal weight. She will be getting extra food and should start putting on weight with the worms gone. Skylar is very muscular and can easily walk 3+ miles. The good nutrition should also help make her already beautiful coat even better.

In the days since the first two, Skylar has earned free roam of the house day and night. No accidents or behavior problems at all. Skylar is one of the gentlest dogs I've had. She takes treats very gently. If you get on the floor with her, she will lean into you once you start petting her, and then melt on to her back so she can have belly rubs. She will occasionally hop up on a chair or the couch, but mostly lays on the floor. At night, she sleeps on the floor next to my bed. Skylar's name is new to her, but she will come when called. She also knows "sit." I think she will be very easy to train on other commands. As previously mentioned, she walks great on a leash.

As far as requirements for Skylar's furever home, there really are very few other than good food and daily exercise. Skylar is a very sweet girl and could fit in most homes.

Skylar does need to get spayed yet. I will be scheduling that as soon as possible. She is available to meet and possibly have a "pending" adoption. Does Skylar 14-032 sound like the perfect companion for you? Contact your placement adviser to set up a meeting to find out.

Updates

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Hi folks, Skylar here. As mentioned in the last update, I had a family come to meet me on Saturday. When Max and Gloria arrived late afternoon after traveling for 7 hours to get here, I was very happy to meet them. FD said it was like I knew they were here for me. My foster brother Leon didn't greet them as nicely as I did, but he turned on the charm after less than a couple minutes.

They visited with FD and petted me and foster sister Ziggy and Leon for a couple of hours. Then they left without taking me with. Me and Leon tried to follow them out the door, but FD made us stay. I was a little bummed, but still my happy self.

Sunday morning, FD got up early and fed us right away, and then took us for our walk. We no sooner got back and Max and Gloria drove in. Me, Leon and Ziggy mugged them as soon as they got in the house. Leon barely growled at them this time. They talked for a while with FD and then signed some papers.

Then the best part. They put their leash and slip lead on me and took me to their car. I'm going home!

Again, I want to thank the rescue that pulled me from the shelter in Kentucky, the transporters that brought me to Minnesota, RAGOM, and all the people that support RAGOM. Without all of them, my life story would have had a very sad ending a few weeks ago. Thank You for saving me.

Hello Skylar followers, Skylar here.

Foster Dad (FD) thought I should do this update. I really must thank RAGOM and all its supporters for saving me from death row in that shelter in Kentucky. I'd also like to thank the transport network that got me safely to Minnesota. Very amazing network of loving and caring people.

Since my last update, I have been settling in and becoming much more comfortable here with FD and the rest of the pack here. Foster sister Bailey 14-025 left and went to a permanent foster home. I miss playing with her. We had lots of fun wrestling and playing chase every time we went outside. We would wrestle some in the house, but FD wasn't thrilled about it so we kept it pretty mild. I do OK without a playmate, but still try to coax foster brother Leon to play. He won't have any part of it, but does get very frisky like I do when we come in from the outside.

The day after my last update, FD loaded me up in the car and took me to the big city. He said it was Edina. We went to a meet-and-greet at a Chuck and Don's pet food store. I met lots of people and other dogs. A few people gave me treats! FD said I did very good for my first meet-and-greet.

A couple of days later, FD loaded me up and brought me to Minneapolis to get spayed. The only problem was that I was already spayed. FD said that whoever did the surgery must be very good, because he checked me pretty closely for a scar and did not find one. FD wasn't happy about the drive in horrible traffic, but was happy that I was spayed. He did salvage the trip by stopping to buy more dog food.

FD told me that there is a family interested in adopting me and that they are coming to meet me from pretty far away. Let's hope the weather doesn't foul things up. It has been not the best lately, so our walks have been on the short side until today.

One more thing FD thought I should mention is that I got checked for worms again to be sure that the medicine killed them all. All is good! The medicine worked and I am worm free. Thanks for checking in on me, Skylar 14-032.
