This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Please welcome Miss Skylee 14-136 to RAGOM.  Skylee is 14 month old female mixed breed. She appears to be Yellow Lab and possibly Chesapeake. Only a DNA test could confirm that. Skylee weighs in at 52 LBS. She has had her RAGOM wellness exam and is now current on all vaccines. She tested negative for Heart Worm and Lyme disease. In the vet's words " a very healthy young dog".  Skylee is scheduled for spay surgery on 6/11/14  at MNSnap.

Skylee was a owner surrender from NW Iowa. Her owner was working longer hours and wanted a better life for Skylee.

Skylee was very stressed when she came to me. She had been in boarding for a couple weeks and had a pretty long car ride to me. She met my 2 senior resident dogs with no problems and wanted to play with my cats. The cats weren't really interested in playing with her and kept their distance. Skylee paced and panted a lot, so I took her for a 3 mile walk with resident girl Belle. That seemed to help some and gave her a chance to bond with me and Belle. Skylee was a ball of energy on the walk and does pull pretty hard on the leash. The pulling gradually eased up the further we went. Skylee did yip for the first 10 minutes when I put her in the crate at bed time. She was quiet the rest of the night.

The 2nd day, Skylee was still pretty nervous and had what I call "the new place Jitters". She paced , panted and drank quite a bit of water. We went for another 3 mile walk and it calmed her down some but she was still a bit worked up over all the sudden changes in her life. She did eat her meals good. Another walk that evening. She started to show some of her hunting instincts. She really wanted to work the road ditches for pheasants or any other birds. She did not tire out in the 3 miles we walked. Things went well again at bed time.

The 3rd day Skylee started learning the daily routine and started to relax more and show her true personality. Skylee is very affectionate and likes to follow me where ever I go. The panting and pacing was starting to slow down also. We kept the 4 mile + walks going to keep her "worn down" some. She started to play with toys and chew on bones. No potty accidents in the house since she arrived. I do let her out every 3-4 hours or if she goes to the door.

The 4th day and beyond. Skylee has settled in more and is knowing the normal routine here. Skylee did great on the ride to the Vet's office and was pretty good getting blood drawn for the tests. Skylee still wants the cats to play with her but they have learned to just not run from her and to give a "back off" warning and she will usually heed the warning. Skylee also ,sometimes, tries to initiate play with the 2 senior resident dogs. They give a "knock it off" warning and she heeds it very well. Skyee continues to become friendlier and just a good companion. I've learned that Skylee does know how to play "fetch" with a ball. It was said that she loves Frisbee. I have not water tested Skylee but I would bet she will love it.

Skylee has not had much training. She does have pretty good recall and will sit for treats. Some more repetition and consistency should get this girl well on her way.  Some training classes could help also.  Skylee will need to be walked a pretty long distance every day. Other activities would be good also. She has a lot of energy.

I've only had Skylee less than a week , so there is more to learn about her.  Does Skylee sound like the dog for you? Contact your placement adviser to find out more and possibly set up a meeting.

Updates

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

Happy New Year Skylee fans, Skylee here again.

Lots to report since my last update. We had lots of house guests for the holidays.

Charlie 12-134 was the 1st guest to arrive. He was FD's foster dog twice! He is mostly blind but gets around just fine. I tried to get him to play with me but he wasn't interested. That same day, FD's sister and brother in-law came with their dog Annie. Annie is a Australian Shepherd and has nerve problems in her back legs. I could tell she wouldn't want to play with me so i just tried to be her pal.

A couple days later, Rusty 04-374 and Diver 14-220 came. Their FM brings home made treats for all the dogs. Rusty has been here twice before and Diver was here for Thanksgiving. We all got along great and had a Merry Christmas. It seemed very quiet here after they all went home.

I continue to have several wrestling matches a day with my foster brother Chandler 14-292. He lets me know if I am getting too rough with him and I take his signal.

I still struggle with meeting new people. I get very excited and forget most of the manners I have been taught. FD is unable to help me much with this and said that I need help from a professional trainer. Any potential adopters for me, will need to commit to get me this help. This is really my only quirk.

Here is another summery of my positive traits:

* totally housebroke and able to go 10 hours between potty breaks

* I get along great with all dogs I have met. Proper intros help.

* I walk "Great" using a gentle leader

* I get along good with cats. I live with 2 now. I will play hide and seek with one and let the other one snuggle and sleep with me.

* I don't counter surf or get in garbage

* I don't chew inappropriate things. I love my bones and chew toys

* I know a few commands. I will sit, stay and shake hands. I'm working on "Lay Down" but need more work on that. My recall is very good.

* I would be a great walking or running companion. I can do 5 miles plus easily.

* I have pretty strong hunting instincts. With some training I could be a great hunting companion.

* I like kids, but since I can get a bit excited, they should be 5-8 years old or very dog savvy.

Do you have the commitment that I need? Are you willing to help me outgrow my puppy-like behavior? Contact your placement adviser to set up a meeting.

hanks for checking in on me, Skylee 14-136

Hi Skylee fans, Skylee here again,

It's been a while since my last update ,so I have lots to report.

My temp foster brother Chandler 14-292 became my full fetched foster brother. Fortunatly his allergy medication is working well and his pain medication is working good also. He gets baths once a week!. I'm glad I don't get them that often. The really good part of his meds working is that he is feeling much better and now will play with me many times a day.

My temp foster sister Lady 14-287 found a perm foster and left for there a couple weeks ago. I miss cuddling up and sleeping with her.

We had a couple house guests here for Thanksgiving. Rusty 04-374 and Diver 14-220. FD made us a dog friendly Thanksgiving Turkey dinner. It was very yummy! I asked for seconds but FD said it wouldn't be fair to the other dogs. Diver would get in on some of the play sessions with Chandler. We had a good time and their foster mom brought us some of her yummy home made treats.

I went to another Meet & Greet in Edina. This was the 1st indoor one I had been to. I got lots of treats but got a bit possessive about the bag of treats left on a chair by me. FD figured I was a little stressed by all the noise, dogs and so many people. I was nice to all the people but not as nice to all the dogs. A little too much , all at once.

My new people meeting skills ,at home, still need some work. I'm just so excited to meet new people. I calm down very quickly with people I have met before. FD thinks that I still have a lot of "puppy" in me and that this should get better with age.

We are only walking once a day since the daylight is so short. We are only going a mile at this point because Chandler no walks with Belle and I.  I miss my long walks but these do help burn some of my energy. My playing with Chandler helps burn some also.

I'd really like to find a family of my own , even though I have it pretty good here. Could that family be you? Contact your placement adviser to set up a meeting.

Happy Holidays, Skylee 14-136

Hi, Skylee here again,

I thought I should post another update. FD says I am getting better with "sit", recall and at meeting new people. One of my new things is to come to FD when he lays on the living room floor and press my head into him for hugs and rubs. I won't lay still and cuddle yet. Maybe some time s oon.

We are still walking twice a day for a total of around 4 miles. My foster sisters ,Belle and Lady come with. Foster brother Chandler has to be walked separately because of his strength and his spine injury. Our walks are getting closer together since the daylight is getting shorter.

We had a overnight guest a couple weeks ago. FD called it a "Slumber Party". Her name was Bella 14-317. It took a while but I did get her to play with me. Bella came from Western North Dakota and was headed for a foster home in southern Minnesota. FD took her to the Twin Cities the next day. I wish she could have stayed and played some more.

FD told me today that he set up a play date for me with another RAGOM dog on Friday. FD says it will be good for both of us. We also will be having a house guest for the weekend. His name is Moe. He lives next door and I see him a couple times a week. He's a beagle mix and doesn't really want to play with me.

FD said I should be sure to mention that I am still available and that I would love to meet you. Contact your placement adviser to set up a meeting. Thanks for checking in on me.

BFF from Desiree -Scott & Patty Blomgren

Sunday, October 5, 2014

Hi folks, Skylee here again,

FD got after me to do a update since I haven't done one in quite a while. There is a lot to report, so here goes.

My foster sister Ziggy got even sicker and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. FD was very sad but relieved that it was over. We all miss Ziggy. Her legacy does live on. Blood and tissue samples were sent to the U of M to help with cancer research. Lets hope they find a cure for this horrible disease.

With the not knowing when Ziggy would cross the bridge, FD didn't want to commit to showing me off at Goldzilla. We did go and met up with Sadie's new foster. I was sad to loose my play partner but happy to see Sadie have her own foster mom. Sadie was adopted quickly after going to her new foster mom.

For a few days, it was just me and FS Belle and the kitties. Then FD left and came back with a Chocolate Lab named Lady 14-287. She had a hard time just walking around and had no interest in playing with me. We have to walk pretty slow and stop for Lady to rest. She is getting stronger and able to go further every day. FD says we have to just bear with her while she builds strength and stamina.

Well wouldn't you know, that a few days later, FD leaves and comes home with another dog. His name is Chandler/ Copper 14-292. He is in pretty tough shape. He has a spinal injury and horrible allergies. He will have lots of Dr. bills and could use some donations to help with the bills. On a side note, I did get Chandler to play with me just a little yesterday. FD says no "Rough Housing" with Chandler.

OK, now on to me. I went to Goldzilla! WOW!  Tons of dogs and people. I was very excited at first but did calm down after we were there a while. I got to meet lots of people and lots of nice dogs. I also got to go to a Meet & Greet in Coon Rapids. Again I got to meet lots of people and lots of dogs. I even got to wear the donation vest.

FD thought I should make mention of some of my qualities. I am a very affectionate girl. I do have lots of energy and enthusiasm. I love walks and going with on errands.  I don't get into stuff on the counter or in the waste basket. I only chew my toys and bones and maybe a stick when I am outside. I am totally housebroke and can go over 8 hours without going outside. My recall has improved. I love to learn new things and usually learn quickly. I am good with cats but should have slow intros to new ones. I love playing with other dogs. I wrestle, chase and play tug.  I do have pretty strong hunting instincts. With some training I could become a hunting partner.

I have met with a few families but have managed to scare them off with my "high energy" greetings.  I really do settle down after a while. I'm just so happy to meet new people. I love kids.   Could I be the perfect dog for you?  Contact your placement adviser to find out and set up a meeting. Thanks for checking in on me, Skylee 14-136

Hi, Skylee here again,

I have to start out by apologizing. FD (Foster Dad) and I couldn't make it to the Meet & Greet in Edina because my FS (foster sister) Sadie 14-218 had gone to another foster. Things didn't work out for her there so she came back to FD. I was happy to have Sadie back with us. She likes to play with me, some, and tolerates me wanting to play all the time.

My FS Belle and Sadie walk the 3 mile walk with me and FD just about every morning. FD says I get a little "stir crazy" on the days it is raining. I love the walks and now have a job catching and eating grasshoppers and crickets. FD says I am very quick.

FD continues to ask me to "sit" all the time. He says I could do much better but it will take time and lots of practice. FD says my recall could also be better. The biggest thing I need to work on, according to FD, is meeting new people. I get very excited and jump up. It takes me 10 minutes or more to just calm down some. Sometimes it can take a hour to completely calm down. FD is hoping that my learning to "sit" and "stay" will help with this. He calls it "re-direct" , whatever that is supposed to mean. FD does say that much of the "spirited" behavior should relax as I get older, He says that now I am a puppy in a big body. The good part about learning new things is that I get treats and praise.

In other news, We had a guest for a few days. His name was Rusty 04-374. FD said he has cancer and is in remission now. We got along good but he wasn't real playful. The day after Rusty left I had a play date with Jamie 14-245. We had tons of fun. Jamie, Sadie and I played chase, wrestled and played tug with a stick. Jamie's FM was very happy to see him get to run and have fun. I hope he comes back again.

On a sad note, my foster sister Ziggy 11-264 has taken a turn for the worse. She has had her tongue, ears and eyes turn yellow from liver failure. She has lost her appetite. FD says she will be crossing the Rainbow Bridge very soon.

Coming up on Sept. 13th is Goldzilla. It is RAGOM's biggest event of the year and is a fundraiser. There are lots of fun activities for dogs and people. For all the details go to : goldzilla.ragom.org   Please join us for the fun and help us continue to rescue Golden Retrievers and mixes. You won't be disappointed.

 Hi fans, Skylee here again,

Since my last update we had a house guest for a week. You might recognize her in the pics. Her name is Desiree 14-155. I was so happy to have another playful dog around! We would both play until we couldn't any more, then rest for a short time before we went back at it. We played chase, wrestled, and played take away with toys and bones. We became best of friends about a hour after she got here. Desiree is just about half my weight but could hold her own in a wrestling match. She could also out run me pretty easily. We had tons of fun and I enjoyed having her here.

A couple of weeks ago I impressed FD. He got some treats and within 5 minutes he taught me to "Shake Hands". I now do it any time he asks even without a treat. FD said I am very smart and a very quick learner. He said that is good because there are lots of things to learn to be the "perfect" dog.

I got a new foster sister a couple days ago. Her name is Sadie 14-218. She is big and fluffy. She was saved from "Death Row " in a shelter in Wisconsin. She was very stinky and had lots of fur matts. FD had to give her lots of attention the first day to get her cleaned up. I was a little jealous but knew that I would get my fair share of attention later and maybe have another playmate. She does like to play some but not like Desiree did.

Now that I have been with FD for a while, he says the big thing I need to work at is meeting new people. I get very excited and lose some of my manners and jump up. Most times after 5 minutes with the new people I will settle down and just want lots of lovin and pets/rubs. FD says I have improved on taking treats. He makes me "stay" before I get any treat, then says "gentle" when I take them nice and easy. This is tough for me, but I can do it. We work on this many times a day.

Now for the fun part. FD and I are going on another road trip. We are going to the Meet and Greet at Chuck and Don's pet food store in Edina on Saturday 8/16/14. Come out and meet me, FD and many other RAGOM dogs. It's from 1-3 PM. I'd be very happy to meet you.

Hi RAGOM Fans, Skylee here again,

Since my last update I went to Pet-A-Palooza in St. Paul at the State Fairgrounds.  There was tons of dogs and lots of people also. FD [foster dad] told me I did very well and was a very good girl when some young kids gave me a toy and then took it away from me multiple times.

On the way home from St. Paul we stopped and met some potential adopters and their 2 dogs. We had lots of fun playing. FD said they weren't ready for a young dog with my energy level at this time. He told me that some times it takes a few meetings to find the perfect match.

Meanwhile, FD keeps making me sit for just about everything. He says I am slowly getting better but still need more work on that. FD also makes me go in my crate and "stay" when he feeds me and gives me treats. He says I am doing great on this. I have lots more to learn and I like learning, especially if there are treats involved.

Yesterday FD brought me along to the vet's office to get Frontline and Heartguard for me. Well, I was very excited and forgot most of my mannerrs and jumped up on people and put my paws on the counter. For some reason, FD introduced me to everyone as "Hi, my name is get down no, what's your's." I'm not sure what that was supposed to mean but FD told me I had memory lapse from how I was taught.  FD says we will be working on that.

We continue to go walking for close to 4 miles a day. FD says if I had another dog to play with or played fetch, I wouldn't need to go quite that far. Play dates with other dogs would work also. FD says I could use more socialization. My 2 foster sisters aren't playful, so I play some with the kitties now.

I asked FD to describe me. He said: "Young, affectionate, and energetic. A Diamond in the rough."  Do I sound like a good match for you and your family? Contact your placement adviser to find out. Skylee 14-136

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Hi, Skylee here,

Foster Dad [FD] thought I should try doing one of my updates, so here goes.

Since my last update ,when FD posted that humiliating picture of me with the cone on my head, Things have been going very well. I did only have to wear that cone for a couple days after my spay surgery. FD made me stay pretty low key for a few days while I healed. That meant no getting the Zoomies and running around the yard like i'm crazy. I am able to do that now and really enjoy it. Too bad my foster sisters aren't playful. We could have lots of fun. I do play some with the kitties. FD has to tell me to chill out if I get a little to crazy with them. I've never hurt any of the kitties.

FD takes Belle and I for a long walk in the morning. I start pestering him as soon as I get done eating my breakfast. I get Belle to help with the pestering some times. I really enjoy the long walk. There are always new smells to check out every day. We go for a short walk after supper. Foster sister Ziggy comes along ,so we have to walk slow and only go a mile , so she can keep up. Ziggy is very sick with liver failure.

The other day FD put this new gizmo on me before we went for a walk. He called it a "Gentle Leader". I really hated it at first and tried to get it off many times. This Gentle Leader makes it very uncomfortable for me to "pull like a locomotive" when I'm on the leash. FD says I walk "Very Nice" on it compared to the flat collar. I'm getting used to it now and don't mind it as much. I do miss pulling hard.

Tonight FD told me he signed us up for a event called Pet-A-Paloza on Saturday 6/28/14 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St Paul from 1-3pm or maybe longer. FD said it would be lots of fun with lots of people and lots of dogs. Come on out and meet me and lots of other RAGOM dogs and volunteers. There should be a map posted on the home page of this RAGOM web site. I'd love to meet you!

One other thing to report. FD is making me sit all the time. It seems at any given moment he will ask for a sit. I usually give him one and then I get pets or sometimes a treat. I also "sit" and "stay" for my meals in my crate. Speaking of which, I am starting to spend more time just "chilling" in my crate. FD leaves the door open so I can come and go. Some nights I sleep in there also. I've also learned to go in my crate if FD tells me to"Kennel Up". FD says I learn pretty quick and that I am eager to learn.

Well that's about it for now. If you are interested in possibly adopting me , contact your placement adviser.  Skylee 14-136

Since her last update, Skylee had spay surgery. As always, the great people at MNSnap did a great job. She was a bit groggy for the rest of that day but was back to herself the next day. The toughest part was limiting her activity. She got a new butcher bone to keep her occupied. We are back to walking 4+ miles just about every day, weather permitting. No fetch or anything requiring jumping for a few more days.

Skylee continues to be well behaved and has earned full free roam of the house. She has lots of toys and bones that she chews on quite often. She can de-stuff a toy pretty quick. She has not chewed on anything she isn't supposed to.

Skylee has gotten used to my cats and they have gotten used to her. One of the cats will play some with Skylee.

Skylee will go and hang out in the crate some times. She knows to go in there, on her own, at feeding time. I'm still working on getting her to sit and stay for her food.

In the 2 weeks that Skylee has been here, she has become very affectionate and has bonded to me. She has come a long way from the stressed out dog she was when she arrived. Here are a few of her highlights:

  • Housebroken. Had 1 accident and I will take the blame for that.
  • Good with all dogs we have met since she came here.
  • Good with cats that are dog savvy. She does heed warnings but wants to play.
  • Would be a great walking or running partner. She does not tire easily.
  • Could possibly be a hunting partner with some training. She seems to have very strong instincts.

Here are some things that I think Skylee would need in her forever home:

  • Lots of activity. Walks, play, etc.
  • Continued training. Classes would be good.
  • A crate would be good but not required. She seems to like the crate at this time.
  • Chew toys and bones to keep her good habits good.
