Smitty 07-316

Profile

Smitty came to my house last night about 7:30 p.m. He met the two resident goldens and the visiting female. We quickly decided he was fine with other dogs. He has also ignored the cat. All of this was expected as his surrendering home had filled us in on his behaviors. They were right. Since he came in the middle of a work week, his routine will be pretty tight until the weekend. It's the first week of the semester at the college where I work, but I did manage to sneak home for lunch today...so they all got their mid-day break. I did crate him in the dining room since we don't know him that well yet....and the thought of four dogs wrestling in my house with nobody to referee makes me nervous!!!

Smitty is six-years-old. He is not a Golden Retriever. He is gold in color, with white feet and a white tip to his tail, as well as his head and the top of his snout. He is very sweet. He was returned to Ragom after four+ years because he wasn't doing well with the very young children in his home. Small kids make him nervous. He's tall. I'd estimate he weighs 80 or 90 pounds. And he's GORGEOUS!

In the next few days, we'll go to the vet for the required vet check....but it appears he's up to date. He already has a microchip and he's neutered. We'll look for a home with no kids under 12 years of age. But I don't foresee any other requirements in his forever home. He was trained to an electric fence, so he's good with that too! He would love a running partner. He'd be okay with or without another dog, he's fine with cats and he even seems good with our rabbit. I can't imagine we'll have him long. More as we get to know him.

Our wonderful Gus was put to rest July 18th.  He came into our family in 2012 and was the perfect companion for us.

He enjoyed his backyard immensely along with chasing tennis balls till it was dark out.  He loved riding in his pickup truck and trips to our place in northern Minnesota where he could stretch out and run.

Gus touched many lives in a positive way.   He was 13 when he left us.   Rest In Peace old buddy.

Smitty continues to do well in foster care. He's adapted well to the comings and goings of dogs and he gets along with everyone. He's used to the work-week schedule but I think he likes the more relaxed weekend schedule better.

This weekend we are dog-sitting three dogs, one of whom is a young golden who likes to bother Smitty and my guy Bob. Smitty won't let him share his water dish but he lets him do everything else to him. Bob is incredibly patient too. Before the extra dogs came, (and before the recent cold-snap) my two guys and Smitty were getting lots of long walks. He walks wonderfully and it's possible for me to walk all three dogs without any issues.

He is more of a watch dog than we're used to. He only barks when someone is on our property. He is not an alarm barker, and doesn't bark at people just walking by, but anybody in our yard is fair game. I think my two guys would just let a burglar in and show them the treat cupboard, so it's nice to have a little canine protection.

In the picture there are the six dogs that are here this weekend...note the black standard poodle in the back, the three red goldens, the blond baby golden...and Smitty. He is NOT camera shy!!

Just a quick update on Smitty....he is doing great. He's an easy dog to have around. He just goes with the flow.

Attached is a photo of Smitty and his two foster brothers, Smitty is on the left.
