It is with great sadness to report that we lost Sweety July 3, 2013. Her heart finally gave out. She had been slowing down over the last month but was only really sick for the last few days. Even though Sweety was with us for only 41/2 months, she had tunneled her way into our hearts and brought so much joy to our lives. When we first met her at her foster home, she greeted us by burying her head into our legs like she loved us at first sight. When I sat down on the floor to say hello, she plopped down beside me and put her head in my lap. We thought she had picked us and we fell in love immediately. (Later we realized that she did this with every one she met if they would let her). It happened over and over that people would say "What a sweet dog! What is her name?" The first night we brought her home from Sioux City our neighbors next door had made her a welcome home sign and taped it to our front door. Another friend had given us a stuffed yellow heart with the words "Too Sweet" across it. I offered her the stuffed heart and she gladly took in her mouth and was as happy as a clam. When I could get her toy away from her, I'd throw it down the hall and she'd run and get it and run back to me. That heart was her special toy and she always had it near her to take it outside or bring it up on the bed for cuddling. Sweety's stuffed toys came in handy when we would take her out side to do her business. We would walk a block or two, and then she would just stop in the middle of the street and wouldn't move in any direction . We would pull one of her favorite stuffed toys out of our pocket and throw it in the direction toward home, and she'd go grab it, take off and book it home - sometimes galloping! Sweety just loved to roll on her back in the snow. I'd take her outside and all of a sudden she'd dive roll close to my feet and roll and roll on her back. She had such a happy face and would look over at me with her front paws tucked in front of her, as if she was saying "don't I look cute?" Sweety took rolling on her back to a whole another level. And she didn't hesitate to try rolling on our neighbors snow as well. As the snow was disappearing she'd find the only patch left and roll to her heart's content. We learned from experience the answer to the home visit question: "What would you do if you found your dog up on the table?" One night I was working on the computer and Sweety was out in the living room on the couch sleeping. I heard some soft barks coming from the living room. I had never heard her bark before and walked into the dining room and she was standing on the dining room table looking at me. I was so shocked I ran to get my phone to get a picture of her. It was as if she was saying, "I got up here just fine, but now could you help me get down?!" She never did get back up on the table. Sweety was quite a persistent counter surfer. One of the first times we left her alone, we came home and found two cartons of chicken broth all over the rug. I thought we had dog proofed pretty well. She definitely had that quiet, sneaky Golden way of slipping into the kitchen when we were busy. She had no problem getting her front paws up on the counters. Sweety was with one of us everywhere we went in the house. In the kitchen, she would lay down on the floor right on my feet, and each time we'd move over a few feet, she'd follow us around the island! Sweety loved going for car rides. When we'd take her outside, if we stopped at the car for even a second, she thought she was going for a ride and would sit down instead of going for a walk. One time she sat down beside the car, holding out for the ride. I decided to drop the leash and walk down the driveway to encourage her to come. No luck, she just sat there watching me walk away. So I crossed behind the car and into the yard so she couldn't see me. I looked back and she was leaning out , stretching her head around the corner of the car so she could see me again. I took a few more steps so she couldn't see me. Then she crouched down and peeked under the car to keep her eye on me! Finally she got up, took two steps out to a spot behind the car and sat back down as if to say, go ahead and take a walk, I can see you all the way down the street now. I'll just wait here. Another thing she loved was going to garage sales. She would stay there all day, greeting people, especially the babies. One time we had to have the mother bring the baby in the carrier out to the car so we could get Sweety to come out to the car to go home. Sweety was such a gift and a joy. She loved to cuddle and would be jealous if one of our cats was getting any of "her" attention. She was very happy here and loved every one she met. She really was the "sweetest" Golden girl. We miss her sweet, quiet spirit/presence and soul. Although Sweety left us way too soon, the three of us knew we were family and she had found her forever home. Thank you to all the families and volunteers that transported, fostered and loved her until she made her way to us. Jan and Laurie
